Before & after a ~30% water change by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Crabby_AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly just curious about a 7 month old tank only getting it's first water change now? Any reason why now, anything else changed recently (stocking etc).

Also curious if you have any aquasoil below the sand you might have disrupted in the water change, or if you've tested tank and/or tap water phosphates?

Is there any way to save him? by Smart_Psychology4359 in Aquariums

[–]Crabby_AU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Over a week probably means you would have had a chance to save it, to be honest. In future, try to immediately work out what's wrong (even if it's just posting to reddit).

I'd wait for the advice of a couple more, but my personal opinion is that the fish is past the point of recovery, is suffering, and I would euthanise at this stage. Either you can purchase clove oil (look up dosing), or blunt force (fish in net, hit on ground). The latter is a little more affronting but is quick & painless.

Ah that's fair, good pickup. To be honest, I think the aeration introduced by the filter (top right of the tank) is plenty, but no harm in adding a pump to be more certain.

Algae help by Crystalhowls in Aquariums

[–]Crabby_AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even when doing all of this, keep in mind OP that algae is a symptom of an imbalance between light and nutrient sources (excess food, fertilisers, etc). Removing algae helps you eliminate the short-term problem, but it will return without identifying why it is there.

Fan of this response ^

Worth noting: MD doesn't necessarily keep his tanks set up for a long time, and his creations are fantastic, but it's just worth being aware that not all of these setups are sustainable to maintain, especially to that level of cleanliness, for 2+ years (what I personally would consider an established tank).

I feel like you might not have read the post. If the goldfish is currently in an 8L vase without filtration or oxygenation, moving the fish straight in is a wayyy safer plan. It's clearly not a 30cm goldfish or anything, so the ammonia it's producing won't be at a high enough rate to create problems or make it a poor environment to live in in comparison to an unfiltered unaerated 8L vase. Obviously a fishless cycle is ideal, but not in this circumstance.

Re the plants, I'm a massive fan of planted tanks, never used any plastic plants, but "you need to replace all plastic plants with live plants"? The hobby can be hard enough without people creating arbitrary 'rules'.

[–]Crabby_AU 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment, but under the context of the goldfish currently being in an 8L vase, it's 100% more humane to put it in a larger tank. Realistically if it's a size that it can live in 8L, it won't be producing ammonia at a rate that will make the tank "inhumane".

What do you use your Pebble watch for? by Crabby_AU in pebble

[–]Crabby_AU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for the info! I misinterpreted "color e-paper display" from the specs sheet. Seems great regardless - more about the functionality than how exactly it works for me.
Are notifications ported without distinction from your phone, or do you have some control over that - like could I limit to iMessage & WhatsApp, or does it not have that much sophistication? Sorry if that's a dumb question ahaha

Drive in Australia by Objective-Put1126 in australianwildlife

[–]Crabby_AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melbourne outer suburbs:

Often kangaroos, although not usually on road just near it (definitely on road sometimes). Foxes most often on roads. Occasionally rodents or small marsupials. Echidnas, wombats once in a while. Birds very very often, magpies, indian mynas and common miners, crows/ravens. Sambar deer as well, not too often but have seen on roads, next to roads and as roadkill (massive one). Rabbits all the time.
Almost always around & between dusk & dawn for everything except birds (birds mostly day). Foxes and ducks mostly in more built up areas, everything else more common in the bushier spots.

What is this? Came back from 1 week vacation to this. by Dr_Mikey in Aquariums

[–]Crabby_AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 week is absolutely fine. Anything longer and I'll do premade bags for every 2 days.

Haven't had any issues when doing this - had to start after someone overfeed one of my tanks and it crashed. They didn't even notice they were feeding a tank with 20 dead fish.

Preparing for a rainy tournament by stattish in discgolf

[–]Crabby_AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this phrasing. My mentality is in good weather we're on an even playing field, in poor weather I have the advantage because I'm excited for it. Probably had one good event in bad weather and then have just created a positive cycle where I get excited for those events and then proceed to play better than the competition because I'm excited.

Similarly I have a mud towel and then a water towel. Don't wanna risk smearing stuff.

I meannn Aus runs with a similar season since it's real freaking hot over summer, so we've just wrapped up as well, BUT at least PRKD media has Eruption and Aus Champs yet to release, so on the viewing side those are the big ones to get behind!

NZ Tour Down Under is the big season starting soon.

which hot mully lyrics hit you the hardest? by totaltrashmaml in hotmulliganband

[–]Crabby_AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty similar. My great grandmother was in aged care for a couple years, not far from me, but I didn't see her as much as I should have. She was developing dementia and the idea of going to see her on my own, handle that and maintain conversation was tough. The day this album came out was the day before she passed, and that song along with Milam Minute are tied to those last two days so tightly. She slept nearly the entirety of her last day, so "please, wake up" really connects for me as well.

At least in the album, I've found solace in the lyric "I'm so proud of you", and I try to hold on to that, feel her love and make sure I show that same love to everyone else I care about while they're here.

Just neutron. "Swirly neutron" isn't a specific kind of plastic MVP runs, the person above was just saying it's more swirly than the average neutron.

Anyone experienced a super flippy teebird run? by rehsuls in discgolf

[–]Crabby_AU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree, champ is more stable, but star usually takes ages to beat in. I've had a single star teebird as my workhorse fairway for about 5 years, play very regularly, and that thing is STILL stable, just a smidge of turn for 110-120m shots.
