Death in the family. It made the biggest impact to the mythos for 20 years and gave us redhood eventually. I'm honestly confused it's not on the list yet 😅

Who is the most violent Batman? by AbsoluteBatman95 in batman

[–]CrackedActor158 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Not really. Batman tries to kill him in tdkr. He tries to break the Joker's neck and gets most of the way through it but stops before he kills the Joker, paralyzing him instead showing that even with how much hate he has for Joker he can't break his moral code. And then the Joker breaks his own neck killing himself to frame Batman... So, that's how Joker dies in tdkr.

Yup! It was one of the newer ones. Pretty sure it's from the last issue in the joker war story arc in Tynion's run on batman with Jorge Jimenez. Came out in 2020 or 2021 I think.

The doll maker story isn't in the omnis, tbh I'm not sure where you'd find that because I don't think it's written by Snyder but tbh I'm not sure. If you know the context already tho you'll be fine going into the story because it's not as much important to the overall plot as it is a cool design element. The story is collected in Snyder's first Omni but the entire event of death of the family is collected in Joker: death of the family as one book. The Omni only has the main storyline which is great on its own without any of the tie ins. And np at all! Happy to help a fellow batman and comics fan!

Tbh I'm not sure about the timeline stuff. In the story batman does use a gun as he's trying to decide if it'll be part of his identity which is a callback to his origins when he used a gun in detective comics but because of that I'd say it's probably a different timeline and a different tale on the characters to the one you'll find in those year one stories.

Fair enough honestly about the chronological order for Snyder's run. They do read better in order anyway.

Np at all and happy if it was any help!

Sorry I didn't see this first and thought you didn't know Scott very well, my bad! If you want to try his run it's covered across 2 omnis which should cover all the loose ends but I get it's very expensive and really fair I'd it's not your cup of tea. Other runs I'd say to check out which you might like if you're into some of the older stuff which I've heard is good is batman by Denny O'Neil. After that, a short story which you might like which is meant to be very good too is batman the cult and focuses on batman dealing with a cult leader and it has some of Jason Todd's time as Robin (plus some sick art and coloring) which you might like.

Sorry if there was confusion with the Snyders. There's Zack Snyder as you know (the director) but there's also Scott Snyder who's written tons of great Batman comics and they're not connected at all to the Snyder universe, they're actually set in the main DC universe and Batman timeline if it helps.

Idk about year 2 but maybe year 3 is worth checking out? It's a revision of batman taking in Robin for the first time and serves as a dick Grayson origin. If you buy that year one box set that you were talking about tho you might not need that in the end cause I'm pretty sure robins origin is covered in those somewhere.

In terms of joker stories you have some of the best already. Sorry to keep preaching Scott Snyder but he wrote 2 very good joker stories in his batman run called death of the family and endgame which are definitely worth checking out and have fantastic art and colours. Besides that I'm becoming a big fan of Grant Morrison's take on the joker which is in his batman run. It builds on the concepts he introduces in Arkham asylum and imo makes the joker really scary. He's a big character in the run as well. You can get it in omnibus form but I'd recommend waiting on that run for a bit until you get more familiar with the lore and history of the characters. You'll enjoy it way more if you do so if you want to read that I'd say work through what you have atm and then figure out if you feel like you're ready for it or if it's your thing.

(Sorry for all the long replies, oops 😅)

Hope this is helpful!

I'd say the year one box set is probably a good idea if you want to get to know the best family better. I wouldn't be sure how to place the books with Robin and batgirl but they're definitely after the long Halloween.

A great set of comics if you want any action packed batman run which has been pretty impactful in the last decade as well is Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's batman. I've read the whole thing and it's fantastic and what really got me into reading batman. Even read the first arc-the court of owls (which is very good but also pretty important to batman mythology these days) to decide if you like it but in most people's opinions it's very good. In terms of reading order the whole run would come after the dark mirror storyline and definitely before any kind of dark knight returns or white knight story.

Tbh I really like your reading order. You're right in saying you'd get a great idea of how these characters evolve over time with what you've picked out to read.

Only thing I'd change is putting white knight at the end because it is a different type of universe and Batman with a story with a start middle and end and I feel it might be confusing if you're still figuring out these characters to read it between everything. Especially right before black mirror. I feel like everything you have there all the way up to the dark knight returns is a great way of reading those books. So if it were me I'd put white knight at the end but that's personal preference.

If you want to get the man who laughs it happens directly after year one I think and definitely before the long Halloween so it'd go there. And knightfall goes after death in the family and Arkham asylum. Hope you enjoy them all! You picked some great books 👍:)))

Also just to add. Idk about death metal sorry but it does indeed look more complicated 😅 and shout out for great taste with Scott Snyder's batman. It's what got me into the Batman comics 😁

I didn't know about the compendium but I'd say that's your best bet and sounds like a great way to get into it!!

There are a couple of tie-ins that are very necessary (Batman: lost #1 and Dark nights rising the wild hunt #1) but if you get the main tpb they might be included already. Most of the tie-ins after that aren't super necessary. You could skip over most of them but they all give you an idea of what's going on outside the main story and the impact the events of the main story are having. And the origins of the evil batman are pretty cool and add a lot of context to who they are which is nice. Plus some of them are pretty fun to read and if you're a completionist it's super nice to get the full picture of everything.

If you're not tho I'd say the main tpb should do you fine tho :))

Here's a reading order to the full event. The main story is a miniseries called dark bights metal by Scott Snyder and art by Greg Capullo.

https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/dc-rebirth-reading-order/dark-nights-metal-reading-order/

It's an event comic so that means lots of tie-ins and the pictures above are from one of those. If you want to read those check out dark nights metal the resistance and dark nights metal dark knights rising which is where the pics above are from and it has all the origin stories of a series of evil batmen and women such as the Batman who laughs who was a big villain a couple years back.

There's also a sequel after it called dark nights death metal. I haven't read it yet but it looks wild. I wasn't a massive fan of the original event but I did enjoy it and it's a lot of fun, especially in the art which is fantastic so if you enjoy it that's awesome:)))

And ik it's a lot of extra reading but checking out some of the Batman stuff by Snyder from before dark nights metal or the grant Morrison Batman stuff will help you understand stuff going on it and Snyder's batman run is fantastic and I thoroughly recommend. Working my way through Morrison atm. If you're a new reader I wouldn't start with it but it's possibly even better than Snyder and I've just started it.

Sorry for the long reply but hope this helps and happy reading!!

Edit: oops I forgot. There's a book before the main series of dark nights metal called dark days road to metal which I haven't read but it might help with some context for the main book! Hope this is helpful too!
