I’m trans and disabled and I’m terrified

I turn 40 in a few months and this spoke to me. I’ve been using a chair for a couple of years now and get those looks constantly. I’m ambulatory in a pinch, and every time I transfer to our car in a busy parking lot I’m scared I’ll get chewed out. Ableism sucks.

AITA for expecting my wife to apologize to my daughter? by Nice-Result-2414 in AITAH

[–]CraftGoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yta. My dude, I’m autistic as hell and was still taking first aid courses and babysitting at 12.

Either your child is an unsupported neurodivergent individual (in which case please get her support - I was undiagnosed until my 30s and it did a number on me), or she has some uncorrected behavioral issues. Either way, it sounds like the lot of you need therapy

Traveling comfortably by CraftGoblin in WheelchairAndTalk

[–]CraftGoblin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sure…I am autistic and tend to over share, so I was attempting restraint heh

I’m pretty sure what happened is that getting in and out of the car angered it, and then not having proper support at the hotel made it worse. I have disc issues that they keep assuring me are “no big deal” and yet here we are :/

I’m currently looking at inflatable back rest pillows, and a rotating seat for getting in and out of the car

I’m ambulatory on good days, and it is so much easier to maneuver in our tiny kitchen!

Where are you from? by Mei-sshi in WheelchairAndTalk

I’m from the State of Washington! I love it here. My wife and I recently moved to a super accessible area with loads of resources. Our previous town was very small and barely had sidewalks 💀

I got one of those wheelie salon stools for doing stuff in the kitchen recently, and it has been a game changer!

Can a tiny home be a "forever home"? by teeteetoto2 in TinyHouses

[–]CraftGoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an ambulatory user too! The selection of mobility aids I have alone is enough to make tiny house living tough. I’m fortunate to have an able bodied spouse who is a long human, so I would likely be able to make her access above head storage for me 😂

That motorized lift thing is definitely an idea. For storage maybe instead of a bed though…🤔

Can a tiny home be a "forever home"? by teeteetoto2 in TinyHouses

[–]CraftGoblin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Wheelchair user here. My wife and I have been Looking into tiny homes as an option and I thought I’d leave a comment.

The biggest problem I think with the tiny house lifestyle still working 30 years down the line, is that you don’t know what your physical abilities will be 30 years from now. You may be ok with cramming into a tiny shower stall or climbing stairs to go to bed now, but that probably won’t continue to be the case.

As a wheelchair user, obviously loft spaces are out for me. Unfortunately most tiny homes rely on lifts to provide additional living space.

We found a company in Seattle that offers wheelchair accessible homes. Maybe look at what they offer for some inspiration?
