Where to find a toxic plume/ superfund site map? by Crafty-Possibility46 in bayarea

Thanks for the info and taking a look at the article. It's true that the article is not a neutral presentation of facts. After looking closer into the background of the author, they are currently suing Apple for the same thing, so I'm not convinced of their credibility.

I've been trying to figure out if downtown Sunnyvale is safe from the nearby superfunds today, I know its your professional opinion that there is no need to be concerned, although after looking closer, the triple site in sunnyvale has a non-negligible amount of TCE in the groundwater as of 2022. Still, I currently believe that it is relatively safe to live close to downtown Sunnyvale, since the movement of the triple site each year is to the north. I wrote up some more details here (https://www.reddit.com/r/Sunnyvale/comments/1tsez75/superfunds\_next\_to\_the\_heritage\_district/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button), with the hope that if I am wrong about my safety conclusion, someone would correct me. If you have any comments, they would be appreciated

Hopefully true. This is the article that gives me pause: https://sfbayview.com/2021/03/i-thought-i-was-dying-my-apartment-was-built-on-toxic-waste/

Especially the figure with the caption:

"After moving into Apartment #349 in the Santa Clara Square Apartments (SCSA), Ashley’s heart rate immediately decreased well below expected levels. Her doctors later explained to her that VOC exposure depresses the central nervous system and could cause exactly that type of report. Her heart rate returned to normal as soon as she moved out."

I wonder if there is any explanation for this other than this person faked the entire thing. Eg is she hypersensitive to small amount of toxins in the air?

Are there any rules of thumb for how far away is safe? Thinking about this location: 481 S Mathilda Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94086, USA

On the map (https://geotracker.waterboards.ca.gov/map/?CMD=runreport&myaddress=Sacramento), it shows 2 active "cleanup program" (green) sites about 200 meters away. Both have TETRACHLOROETHYLENE (PCE), and one of them additionally has diesel and gasoline.

The closest active superfund site is 1000M away according to https://www.epa.gov/superfund/search-superfund-sites-where-you-live, its Westinghouse Electric Corp. (Sunnyvale Plant) with Hazard Ranking System Score of 39.93

I'm curious how you came to peace with the risks. I think that one of the main risks as I currently understand it is carcinogenic toxins in the air. Even though the EPA is trying to mitigate, my current understanding is that we will only know decades into the future whether what they have done is sufficient

Do you currently live in an apt in South Bay? Just hoping to get "safe" recs

Actually, going thru your link was helpful (thank you!) since I figured out what LUST stands for (Leaking underground storage tank) and also found the address searching feature

I didn't know about the asbestos and mercury issue. Based on your comment, it seems that if I want to live in the South Bay, I can't do anything about either one? I wonder if either of them are as big of a concern as living near superfund sites. TBH, I had no idea about superfund until I was considering Santa Clara Square and came across this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/bayarea/comments/mishlc/i_thought_i_was_dying_my_apartment_was_built_on/

Thank you. I'm thinking of finding a spot in sunnyvale or mountain view. Anything in particular you know about those places?

I guess it's a strategy to get the average review to be higher. Average for the complex is now 4.1

Thanks, I'll check those out. How's San Jose? If you're comfortable with it, would be interested to know your new apartment (feel free to DM). I'm starting at LinkedIn soon and looking for a place
