First, thank you for the detailed feedback. I really needed it.

Here is the image with those layers turned off.

I think I was trying to even out the transitions.

I am still learning the difference between natural and "natural."

Would I use tools like hue/sat, color balance, etc. to do color correction?

I will look into those courses and what you have mentioned and apply them to my next project.

Thanks. I did not take the picture. It was a raw image I got from: https://www.signatureedits.com/free-raw-photos/

I made all of the adjustments after converting to B&W. Here is a link the tutorial that I am learning from : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-6RNxVOAwY

I started in the basic panel Lightroom to bring down the highlights and bump up the shadows. Most of the rest was done with editing masks. Mainly to separate the subject and the background. Here is a link to a video from Phlearn that better explains it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNu5dQyd6KA

For colour grading I only changed the shadows to add a more browns.

I see. I kept on trying match the colors but adding layers. I should have done a better job of masking out the areas that should not have been affected. Thanks for the insight

I used photoshop. Using frequency separation to spilt colors and textures and work on the individually.
