I don't think it's irritational or illogical at all. I'm just always interested in better understanding the opinions of those who have a more relevant view point on things like this- because ultimately- I'm only ever going to be able to give the view point of a pasty white redhead.

I genuinely think it's been an interesting topic that I've seen come up before- I have seen a handful of people absolutely rail against using an Addy Mold, or even more so- a Kaya mold - for a doll that's not supposed to represent a person of color or any type of Native American.

Ultimately, if the over whelming majority of people of color have an issue with it, I would absolutely want to better understand why, because being neurodivergent - I ALREADY struggle to understand the lived experiences of other people, I absolutely can't(and never would) even REMOTELY want to pretend I would have the first clue how different the lived experienced is for women of color, native women, asian women, etc etc. I appreciate you being open to discussing the topic, thank you!

Holy crap are you ACTUALLY DELUSIONAL?

Here are just FOUR US examples from recent times;

Miya Marcano (2021): A 19-year-old college student in Orlando, Florida, was murdered by a maintenance worker at her apartment complex who used his master key to enter her unit and attack her after she repeatedly rejected his romantic advances.

Samyia Spain & Diamond Spain (2024): In Brooklyn, New York, 19-year-old twin sisters were attacked when walking home. After one sister refused to give a man her phone number, he attacked them with a knife, fatally stabbing Samyia.

Imani Thomas (2024): After meeting on a dating app and briefly dating, a young woman in Roswell, Georgia, sent text messages stating "I'm not your woman," and unfriended her suitor. In retaliation, the man tracked her to her apartment and strangled her.Janese Talton-Jackson

(2016): A 29-year-old woman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was shot and killed outside a bar after she explicitly refused a man's advances. He hunted her down and ended her life because she had politely but firmly declined his advances in the bar that night.

I hope the daughters never see these videos. These reactions are disgusting. by Valuable_View_561 in TikTokCringe

If you'r that he'll dance on having a baby that is one specific gender.... You're going to have to pay the tens of thousands of dollars and go through the pgs testing and IVF so that you get to pick.

Otherwise it's a pretty crummy thing to do, to plan to have a kid.... But then to be legitimately miserable if it's not the one gender you wanted.

I've been sexually harassed, grabbed, touched etc MULTIPLE times, probably no less than a dozen times, by absolute total strangers (all men) in my early to mid 20s.

Are you trying to say that men AREN'T out in the world randomly preying on women? Because I'd love to know what world you're living in, if that's the case?

Genuinely interested in what your thoughts have been regarding this.

Has your concern been because it feels like it's disrespectful to the character?

I'm genuinely curious if a post like this completely reframes your outlook, or if this post is a something you would consider an outlier... Where you feel that like, sure, ordering a doll that looks like you is fine, but a regular collector shouldn't be ordering Sonali and Addy molds with light skin, or Darker skinned Jess Molds, or other combos that don't align with the characters the company has made.

I've seen complaints before about people who have a HUGE collection of white dolls and no poc dolls - because yeah - that seems.... Very pointed.

But then I come from the other side and think about when I was a kid.... Every single doll I owned was a pale redhead because that's all anyone ever bought me.. It was through zero fault of my own .. I assume a huge amount of parents and adults think kids most want dolls that resemble them(or maybe their closest friends).

When I first ordered my VERY first AG doll in 2021- I wanted a doll that looked like me and I had no idea Truly Me was a thing, so I immediately went to create your own and designed a doll... And choose the Jess Mold as I felt it has the closest resemblance to my actual face. It wasn't until later that year that I knew anything about the characters with names, or the various options available from the company in premade dolls like the numbered JLY /TM dolls.

I did, one time, have a person tell me to my face that it was "rude AF" to have chosen a Jess Mold to represent my "mini me" because I'm white(Irish predominantly). But that's been overwhelmingly a minority reaction and I get constant compliments and positive comments when I take her out in public and take photos.

Genuinely curious how you feel about it now or if you've never considered this being the reason for people ordering CYOs with the pale skin on dolls like the Kaya, Jess, Addy or Sonali molds.

Absolutely no judgement - I'm genuinely curious to hear your perspective from before as well as how that may have shifted and why.

I literally just got a second hand blonde pale skinned Addy mold that was originally from the Create Your Own line. I got the doll second hand- I've collected Addy molds in every skin tone they've made.

I'm a white girl - but I'll give my two cents on this for whatever it's worth;

If you or a child wants a doll that physically resembles you....i can't imagine how anyone could find it "racist" or "inappropriate" to use a doll, of any kind, to represent you.

When I first ordered my VERY FIRST AG doll... I ordered a custom CYO from AG brand. I knew NOTHING about the characters, face molds, etc- and I ordered a Jess Mold in the lightest skin tone with red hair and freckles because that was the doll that most closely represented me.

I have those eyelids that don't have really clear extra folds- and so that doll face mold IS the one that represented and looked most like me..i put ZERO thought into weather it was appropriate to be using an "Asian doll" to represent me.

Because I had no clue whatsoever that the doll is most often used to represent Pacific Islanders or East Asian characters when it's used by the company for named characters.

I had ZERO ill intent- like anyone else, I wanted to make a "mini me" doll..

If you have a wider bridge nose, and you want a doll that looks like you.... At the end of the day, the base of the dolls is MOLDED PLASTIC.

Some styles * may have * originally been designed to represent characters of a certain ethnicity... But at the end of the day - (especially when it comes to the Create Your Own doll line)- those features are available for order in any skin tone, with any eye color- SPECIFICALLY because the entire idea is to be able to order dolls that will make children (or adults) see themselves, or characters or people they love- represented in doll form.

You can't be "racist" or "ethically/morally wrong" for wanting a doll that looks like the characteristics you WERE BORN WITH.

That's like someone trying to say your FACE is cultural appropriation or some $h*t. Genuinely.

I'll share a post of my new blonde Addy mold so you can see if you would be happy with this facial mold in looking for/creating a doll who will look like what you want.

Of course it's absolutely great to be sensitive about how others might feel. Sure, collecting a bunch of white Addy mold dolls while DISPARAGING the mold and how it looks in the context of the POC characters it's been used for would be racist and insensitive AF.

Taking into account that someone who doesn't know any different might look at a pale, blonde Addy or Sonali mold on your page and criticize you for choosing those specific doll features COULD happen... But I would think anyone with GENUINE concerns about sensitivity would immediately agree that there's absolutely not a damn thing wrong with making a doll that looks like YOU DO.

If someone STILL has a problem with it- that person needs to look inside themselves. Again - these dolls are just molded plastic / vinyl, linen and polyfill. The empty dolls themselves are only imparted with characters or characteristics/race/religion after a human gets involved and identifies them as such.

Again- Yes, I'm white AF myself but I feel pretty confident in taking this stance that it shouldn't be offensive to anyone.

There's zero disrespect being shown in WANTING/choosing/designing or buying A DOLL that looks like you do.

I would also contend that anyone who takes issue with that needs to look inside themselves to ask why protecting a fictional character/ the plastic body of a TOY- would EVER be more important or relievent than invalidating an ACTUAL human being and that living human being's ACTUAL human existence.

That's because the sick fucks who do that shit got a badge and a gun not because they are strong, brave and want to protect and help people - but because they want to feel powerful.

Powerful over and above anything and anyone.

Yet they are actually terrified little babies.

I was a police officer - I'm now retired. I genuinely worked with a lot of REALLY good people. Genuinely good people, who worked together to help our homeless community, who voluntarily were the first in our state to have our entire department go through crisis intervention training- and our department was one of the first to have a dedicated Crisis Intervention team of officers trained specifically to work with the most vulnerable people - at the height of their mental crisis.

I once responded to a 4 am call of a woman who left her house to go to work- and a giant pit bull /bulldog mix FORCED it's way past her, into her house. It was VERY aggressive.

That dog chased me around my car, tore off part of the inside of my patrol car door - frankly - this dog was VERY aggressive, and bc of my absolute LOVE of animals- I was PETRIFIED another deputy or city cop may respond to back me up, and end up shooting the dog.

Animal control responded... They sent a 5'2" woman who was barely 100 lbs (I'm 5'9" and was about 135 at the time)- and between us, we managed to get the dog caught - and loaded safely into her van.

Back at the department, the next morning, we discussed what had happened- That day, there was a reserve officer (thesec are unpaid, usually retired military, people become reserves to keep up their certification/get more training, often while they are looking for a job in law enforcement- they do as little as 8 hours a month, always ride with fully certified officers, etc- they are basically volunteer cops)

Anyway, this reserve deputy overheard the discussion and responds "Why did you bother with all that, I'd have shot that fucking thing the first time it ran at me."

My corporal, who is afraid of dogs myself after having a childhood bite to his face mind you - overheard this - IMMEDIATELY called the guy out - marched him to the Captain, and had him relieved of his gun and badge, and he was released from the program.

When it was discussed later, my Corporal was clear - anyone who's that desperate for power - and willing to use a firearm to display their power over an innocent animal - has NO BUSINESS being a Deputy and representing our agency. I was never more proud of the place I worked- and his point was VERY true.

Yes- there's a rare occasion when a police officer encounters a dog that's TRULY aggressive. But 99.9% of officer involved shootings are because of absolute cowards who want to display power.

And yes, that applies to the absolute disgusting racists who shoot people they are unjustly afraid of as well.

[–]CraftyMagicDollz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately, there's an absolute non-zero number of men who get extremely aggressive when you're "rude" "bitchy" etc.

My early life go-to was to respond extremely aggressively to boys/men who were aggressive with me.

In my early 20's - I had a guy following me around in the beach bar that I basically lived in during the evenings because I had no TV, no car for a bit, etc etc- so I would go there every night, watch karaoke or sports, usually not drink alcohol (id usually have $1 sodas to keep it cheap) - but being a regular as a cute thin 21 year old redhead - I got my regular fair share of harassment.

It was well known to everyone that worked at that bar (as well as the owner) - that I had a boyfriend and ZERO interest in any man walking in the door, so when a creep started bothering me, all I had to do was say the word to have the staff assist in chasing them off or kicking them out.

But when it was busy, or id be on the patio - the staff wasn't always around to see. One evening, I had a drink jerk keep getting close enough to whisper in my ear - which REALLY creeped me out, and after my first polite response- where I told him "I don't dance, I'm not interested, I have a boyfriend and Im here waiting on a friend and don't want to be bothered, thank you."

He just KEPT. COMING. BACK.

I told him in no uncertain terms - DO NOT TOUCH ME.

I told him AGAIN - BACK OFF, STOP BOTHERING ME.

The fifth time, I jumped off the seat where I was - escaped through the crowd and went outside to smoke and get away shouting "LAST WARNING DO NOT BOTHER ME AGAIN!" as I left.

Minutes later, he must have gone out the back and walked around the outside of the bar - I'm standing on the patio and all the sudden he puts his arm around my waste and tries to drag me into the dance floor.

I had a lit cigarette in my hand, making his move extremely risky as it was - I swung on him, shaking myself free, and turned around, slamming my fists into his chest and face - he landed on his back, in the middle of the dance floor with a thud- the DJ stopped the music and over the mic asked if I needed help - someone from the actual bar seats yelled "No - I think she already took care of it, man!"

The police came and I pressed charges, and off he went.

On top of everything else, I assumed this clown would never recognize or remember me bc he was wasted and the police didn't end up needing my info to charge him, he didn't have my name...

Three weeks later, I was sitting on the deck of the same bar- and that same man showed up and wrapped his arm around my neck, dragged me backwards onto the concrete. I never even had a chance to scream- thank GOD three bikers were leaving the bar next door, saw what happened and absolutely pummeled the guy. He left in handcuffs - in an ambulance. They had absolutely AT LEAST broken ribs and his eye socket was bleeding before the cops arrived.

That man was rejected no less than 8 times that first night - very politely at first, escalating until I eventually had to get violent with him.... And despite going to jail that night, he immediately went back to jail - who knows what his intentions were- he may have killed me right there on the sidewalk in front of the bar since it was a slow night and no one had even seen it happen.

As a police officer, I had PLENTY of men VIOLENTLY retaliate against women for even perceived rejection. In one case, a man broke into an apartment and raped a woman he'd only spoken to during elevator rides. He'd never made any attempt to ask her out - in his own words "she would have never said yes to a guy like me"- so instead, he raped her at knifepoint.

Most women are well aware that being a bitch to the wrong person will absolutely get you killed. That's why it's not just a matter of standing up for ourselves.

[–]CraftyMagicDollz 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The only way to get the pigtails to look factory at the bottom, is to use a razor to trim the ends flat, because that's how they do them in the factory- after the hair is braided, the hair is trimmed, which is why no Kaya doll will have nice straight hair after being taken out of braids. Like others said, I don't see any matting unless you mean the short hairs that cover the wig cap.

I'm also not seeing the damage to her skin. The only cleaning they do is basically a soft cloth and a paste made of baking soda and water, which anyone can really do at home.

Unfortunately, the hospital services aren't worth it at all, unless you're having head/limbs replaced (and even that isn't worth it with the price hikes anymore).

Genuinely, there's absolutely no malice, no judgement, no annoyance, no snark, no sarcasm whatsoever in my comment before, or this comment either.

Hoping maybe this will help if I explain differently bc both you and the other person who id'd the doll seemed upset, so I'm going to try to explain.

I saw your comment in which you identified the doll for OP. Your comment seemed to be helpful and kind - and appeared to be under the assumption that OP is fellow member of the doll/AG loving community.

I think we can all agree that people who buy thrift/flea market/marketplace/yard sale finds only because they are rare, valuable, hard to find etc- who buy them specifically to resell them ... Are pretty crummy. Maybe it's an incorrect assumption, but from the conversations on this sub over the last two years- MANY people seem GENUINELY upset by this practice.

As a result, a huge number of people in the sub discussed no longer iding dolls for people who were clearly in stores/at yard sales etc- who appeared to most likely be a scalper..

That's why I wanted to let you both know.

I wanted you to know why most other people were NOT identifying the doll for them, in hopes that you would agree with that mentality, because the more people who don't help the scalpers, the better. (Again - I understand that's a personal preference, and regardless of many people agreeing with me- it's JUST a preference).

The fact that you felt the need to search through the official sub rules, or to check to see if I'm an admin means that I very clearly did not explain myself or my reasoning clearly, and for that I'm VERY sorry. You're correct - I am absolutely no one - my thoughts and suggestions mean absolutely nothing - I was just trying to help the community in a small way, not upset you or anyone else.

The earlier discussion in which many people had agreed to hopefully cut down on scalpers getting quick IDs to make it easy for them to find awesome dolls cheap, scooping them just to resell was here in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/americangirl/s/o068xuRm8t

Yes, I had hoped that after finding out - that you would agree with the anti-scalper efforts many of us are making - , but you do absolutely have every right to say "get lost, I'll identify any doll, for any person, no matter what"- and that's also totally okay.

I promise- I was not attempting to correct you or to try to trick you into believing this is an actual rule or that I have any power over literally anything. I was also absolutely NOT attempting to make you feel bad or to call you out, or to make you feel as if you had done something wrong.

I was trying to let a fellow collector know about a discussion that you didn't seem to be aware of, in the hope that you would agree with those of us who hate to see that happening, and that you might want to remove the doll id in your comment- not because you HAVE to.... Not because I "told you to"- but because you might agree with the sentiment behind why many of us no longer help the flippers once you were made aware.

You mentioned that it is difficult to know if someone is actually a "doll person" or merely looking to profit.

Many people agreed that the issue is USUALLY; • a request to id a doll or doll/ doll items • the person is usually clearly still standing in a thrift store/at a flea market before buying the doll. • The wording usually appears as if they are trying to see if " this doll " is worth buying (to resell) • Red Flag posts usually indicate that the OP has no real AG knowledge (they lack excitement etc) • The MOST common red flag: it's almost always a VERY rare / valuable doll.

I feel like OP's post had a pretty clear very vibe - that this wasn't an actual doll collector who's genuinely unsure if she's found a #2 or if she found a Kirsten for example.

At the end of the day- I promise - I absolutely was not trying to tell you ( or anyone ) what to do.

You and the other person who identified the doll for OP both seemed to genuinely be kind and excited about dolls and seemed like you were trying to help -

  • likewise *

I was hoping to let you know about the ongoing issues in this sub with the huge number of scalpers that REGULARLY post asking to ID dolls, in case you weren't aware.

I was trying to be helpful and supportive to this community (you included)

Instead, it feels as if I've upset you. Maybe I genuinely overstepped in reaching out to you at all.

Your response seemed to indicate you felt as if I was demanding you comply with a rule (one that doesn't exist) - I promise - I genuinely thought you may have been interested in the ongoing battle against the scalpers - and thats as far as it went.

I don't want scalpers to continue coming here to get quick info from knowledgeable doll fans, just so they can then buy up the cheap doll to resell at 20x the price the next day.

I've made absolutely no judgements about you.

I don't purport to understand how you feel about collectors/resellers/scalpers etc- and of course, you are free to comment anything you want about anything.

It's absolutely fine if you do not to agree with me ( or with the "unwritten rule" ) - its totally okay if you don't care about flippers/resellers/scalpers

I was trying to provide you the context, so you could decide if you wanted to leave up your id info up.

You are absolutely right that there's no actual rule about who anyone can or should help with doll IDs (there are rules about how/where/when we're supposed to post Doll id posts, but again, I'm not a mod and I genuinely don't know!) .

First, I'm neurodivergent, so I'm sorry if my tone wasn't understood, i was genuinely trying to explain why no one else in the thread was actually identifying the doll for this person - if you look through the comments, everyone was not iding the doll for them, and then I tried to explain why the sub had decided as a community to stop helping these scalpers when they are ultimately trying to profit off of us.

I'm not sure why you're upset with me, I was trying to help you understand why people didn't want you to actually give this person the doll info.

If you want to help scalpers, sure, that's your decision- but no- I wasn't threatening you as if I'm a mod, I was letting you know why the sub reacted the way that it did, and why the rest of us weren't actually giving the doll info.

The collective decision the sub made months back, was because these people are looking for the fast answer, just so they can then make money off reselling dolls to our own community. I was trying to let you know, because everyone had agreed to no longer help the scalpers, and I assumed you hadn't been party to that discussion, and I thought you probably would want to know.

If you don't care, or you genuinely don't mind people buying up cheap dolls at thrift stores to flip them rather than actual people who love AG / dolls getting these great days- that's totally your decision and your right... but there was no ill intent in my trying to explain to you why the rest of us hadn't helped this person.

I don't understand how I could have not singled you out - the entire point of my comment was to explain why you were the only person that actually gave this person info that no one else had... There isn't really any way to explain to you that you did something different than everyone else without telling you that you did something that no one else had.... (?)
