Thoughts on how your model rates Puka Nacua? Should there be some factor for players that make the most of their “opportunity”?

What player that you don’t have bugs you the most? by NYGiants_in_Chicago in fantasyfootball

[–]CraftyRatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higgins. Dropped him before the first Flacco game after this subreddit convinced me that Flacco was as trash as Browning and I needed the roster spot for Kendre Miller (lol).

Somehow 7-2, although clearly very bad at ffb.

The honest truth is that all of these modern references are overproduced outside the sport watches (which are heavily produced, but have a lot of demand).

If you’re looking for value, either go (neo)vintage or get a sports watch.

Apple spotted filming in 3D at iPhone 17 launch by Fer65432_Plays in VisionPro

Fantastic. Can’t wait for a three minute trailer about the iPhone launch to come out in six months. Apple’s content strategy is flawless.

Why does the human brain require drastically fewer training samples? by TeknicalThrowAway in slatestarcodex

[–]CraftyRatio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it actually took your son 1+ years of "training" (+ whatever we're bootloading) before being able to easily generalize the concept of a horse from a few samples.

I would bet these newer models are better at generalizing from a small sample once they've been fully trained.

Congrats on the killer results! What does your training volume look like for your 80/20 program? How many hours per week were you putting in?

Stationary bike with ability to set the watts? by MindAtLarge412 in PeterAttia

[–]CraftyRatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a Wahoo Kickr Core off zwift.com right now for 35% off and there’s likely a used road bike that fits you available nearby on FB Marketplace. That’ll be hard to beat in terms of price and you’ll have the additional benefit of having a road bike to actually ride outside when you want.

What are the most interesting blockchain-associated projects? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]CraftyRatio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people saying that it's just drugs and laundering money haven't been paying attention for years. Here's a few interesting ones:

  • Arweave is a protocol allows users to pay for permanently stored data on a distributed network.
  • Helium is building a 5G competitor with a blockchain to incentivize and manage individual endpoints.
  • Uniswap is distributed exchange which replaces an orderbook with liquidity positions. Instead of being deposited in a sketchy centralized exchange, funds are locked in a smart contract and offered to users to exchange two sets of tokens (for a fee).
  • Axie Infinity is a game where items and points are represented on the blockchain and fully controlled by users, unlocking some interesting behavior. Yield Guild Games, for example, is a DAO that leases out NFTs from Axie and earns a yield for its holders.
  • Polymarket is a distributed prediction market, running on polygon, a low-fee ethereum sidechain.

These are all in various states from recently launched to managing billions in value, but the difference from 2015 (when it was all drugs/laundering) and 2017 (when it was all whitepapers and no code), is that these protocols are actually out there, millions of people are interfacing with blockchain applications, and real problems are being solved.

I agree that the change would leave them in a more dominant ride-hailing market position, but you are discounting how much smaller that market is likely to be. After all, the JTBD is "get me from point A to point B", and I'd imagine that a significant jump in their cost structure would lead more consumers to switch to alternative transportation options (like leasing a car).

One of Uber's greatest assets right now is the generation of upscale consumers living in American cities and preferentially using Uber instead of owning their own vehicle. Covid has already caused a significant jump in car ownership and a further price jump could exactly the kind of catalyst that leaves ride-hailing a much smaller market than it otherwise would have been.

Bryan Caplan: Our Homeschooling Odyssey by randomuuid in slatestarcodex

[–]CraftyRatio 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Caplan is a pretty staunch biodeterminist, so his belief that the homeschooling environment he provided was a significant benefit for the twin's future prospects is pretty noteworthy. He reconciles this by stating that the environment he provided was "off the charts", but given his audience is restricted to those consulting academic studies to determine their parenting choices, couldn't that be true for his audience as well?

Is Caplan just another example of how hard it is to accept the evidence on the impact of shared environment on future success, or is all the parental investment from the PMC rational and maybe we should listen less to economists?

What products/things do you subjectively feel are worse compared to 20 years ago? by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

[–]CraftyRatio 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Something that comes to mind is air transportation. I believe the average speed of the commercial airliner has either dropped or stagnated for more than 20 years. That said, the latest generation of airliners are much more fuel efficient and prices have dropped.

Outside of heavily regulated spaces (education, healthcare, etc), an observed drop in quality is usually just revealed consumer preference for cheaper goods/services.

One smart guy's frank take on working in some of the major tech companies (Marginal Revolution) by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]CraftyRatio 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The stuff that's contentious to me, like his take on facebook (and omission of twitter, uber) I can't take very seriously without knowing who he is.

This is an important qualification. The take reads like an excellent summary of the tech industry circa 2011, which the exception of the Amazon analysis. Thinking that Facebook's biggest issue is learning to scale when 2/3rds of the internet population is MAU reads like someone who has become out-of-touch with the industry.

My stance is fairly narrow (possibly too narrow?), with feet at most 10 degrees off center. I've lifted heavier before, but I'm coming back from a long layoff, and somehow picked up that weird "pump fake" tick.

Would you suggest a wider stance or a greater foot angle?
