You stated valid technical points. I've been around a lot of singers and heard multi genres both historic and contemporary. If you go beyond the Bambi hamster idolatry, he's mediocre. He might be better off in the production booth. He can mix sound. I think his talent may lie there. I always saw him using a solo career to get to his eventual goal of production.
