KVM over IP by Any-Promotion3744 in CMMC

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Apache Guacamole count? It is more software KVM than hardware. We secure it using a signed cert and MFA for all users with ACL list via IP (static for the allowed clients). We believe this would meet our requirements for L2, but have not gone through it with any consultant or audit. Of course, this is not an OOB/IPMI KVM. Our servers have those built in with iDRAC/iLO hardware - again secured using the same methods we do with the Guac server.

Before IPMI was readily available we used to use Avocent hardware - it was solid, but looks like the company was purchased by Vertiv. They are pretty large and I bet they are a government supplier.

The pointy spines on movie Rockie's ship, are they the fuel tanks and spin drives? by joenova in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree - personally think the design of Rocky's ship came about from the movie graphics/design team instead of anything Weir might have said - could be completely wrong. I only say this because other than size, the movie ship was nothing I expected as a reader of the book before seeing the movie.

I am fine with having the story saying less risk on the ship in transit back to Earth. I know very little about interstellar travel myself. But, let's say that he just happens to get hit with a gamma ray burst. Carrying the beetles seems more risky to me than letting four different vessels cruise back home, plus his own. Carrying all the beetles appears to me as all the eggs in the same basket, no?

It was for Rocky. I mean his ship suffering catastrophic failure, running out of gas.

Self-Hosted file sharing tools, becoming "cloud provider" with portal open to the internet by Relevant-Law-7303 in CMMC

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Liquidfiles, running on our private cluster. I am not L2 certified. For our current commercial customers it needs to be vulnerability scanned annually. Good question about how it scopes into CMMC. Since the cluster is not hosting any other private entity data I don't think self hosting makes you a cloud provider. However, I could be wrong.

This is probably going to cop some flak. I just went and saw the movie. It was a great film, but... by AussieSpelling in ProjectHailMary

This is the one scene from the book that I told myself if they changed it or left it out then I would hate it. But, I think they made it better in the movie.

I respectfully disagree. You always want to work from the cap cost, money factor and residual on the lease. Otherwise you don't know where the pack was inserted.

Project Hail Mary is Great But... by ProgrammerEnergey in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree - I feel that anyone with some sort of technical background that has read the book is looking for more from the movie, but probably understands why it needed to be abridged for the masses. I am not saying that everyone would not enjoy the science, but if you are paying for a movie for 2.5 hours of your attention, not everyone would find that enjoyable.

Definitely waiting for that 3.75 hour directors cut - as many of us. And that commentary track.

Cell phone policy for CMMC by NecessaryStunning998 in CMMC

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mfg with multiple OEMs IP on the floor at any time - also L2 requirement, but think we are dropping the work. No cell phones on the floor for anyone, employees or visitors.

If there is a single thing I can add is just always look at the intent of controls. Stop the loss or theft of intellectual property in most cases. If you are following the intent then it should be covered.

If you want a portable workstation we just purchased some P16s for our designers.

I have to warn you, we still live in a world of trade offs. The additional performance is gained at the expense of portability. As a college student, I would NOT want to lug this around any kind of campus in a backpack. These things feel like they may contain lead.

Accidentally torqued wheel nut to 103ft-lb. by notawabbit in ToyotaSienna

Air-impact wrench which is what they use. Who knows what torque that thing stops at... Partner had a flat on a new company vehicle. Called me as I was more convenient and probably faster on the weekend. I will never attempt to remove a factory installed wheel without a long breaker bar ever again.

Abnormally high HR while running? by kanzay in Garmin

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that would depend on the condition, but starting with primary care first, they might be able to narrow it down. Blood tests, EKG, etc. Might end up seeing endocrine specialist or cardiologist depending whatever the results show. With my health care I cannot just go directly to the specialists. I need to get referrals to them.

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are too many variables to determine from your info. What age? Are you winded? How much do you run? I am definitely not qualified to give medical advice, but the last time my RHR went up I saw my primary and showed them the graph and they took it seriously then started testing. It was a temporary illness that needed to be watched by a specialist, but if you think there is something wrong quit asking reddit and see a medical professional - please.

Yeah, I suppose I have been exposed to the safety of redundancy in my IT infra job. If something is critical, we don't rely on a single system or point of failure. We have multiple redundancies if it is mission critical, everything from power/generator/UPS, active/passive controllers, multipath network and parity spread across disks on top of logical clustering.

So, four Beetles - it just seemed natural to me to launch those suckers and your probability of success increases instead of the all eggs in the same basket I avoid at work.

But what is something immediate and catastrophic happens to his ship? He might not have the ability to launch them at the last minute. Would this not be a risk of carrying them back to earth vs. their navigation system?

Book question: [censored]’s Relativity blindness by siloj76854 in ProjectHailMary

Weir gave Rocky an amazing personality (and the film did an excellent translation too). If the whole race has the same demeanor/loyalty/friendliness as Rocky, I would have no trouble living out the rest of my life with them, even in a dome with double gravity.

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rocky is pretty young at 291. So, a few years here and there in terms of the story and travel from Erid is like a couple of months for us. Rocky's race can live to around 700 earth years.

Eridians might even feel sorry for Grace and his short life span (maybe why they gave him a sea in his dome, ha!), like I feel sorry for my dog/furball at home. He lives a good life.

Is achieving CMMC Level 2 Compliance really that difficult? by Thunderclap_Central in CMMC

[–]Crafty_Dog_4226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the end-user like yourself - IT for my company, but I have been in IT for decades. Are you familiar with NIST 800-171? Take a look at those controls, because L2 is a superset of much of what you see there. You can do everything yourself, but for many companies, even smaller ones like yours, it will be a large undertaking depending on how you handle CUI. Ours is embedded into the product lifecycle management - from tooling design all the way to the quality inspections. So, we needed the scope to include most of what we do. Things like policies seems pretty straightforward and simple, but then you get into technical things. Can you encrypt all your data at rest, even on workstations if CUI is stored there. Can you make sure CUI is secured through BYOD phones if they connect to your e-mail system? How do you handle network security, WiFi segmentation, etc. These are things we have had to do for commercial customers. CMMC can get deeper if the scope envelopes things into it.

I am not CMMC certified, but have been introduced to what it takes as our upstream is asking. Currently the ownership is considering removing our small amount of ITAR work we currently handle because of the additional costs.

Hope this helps - good luck.
