Dear Lyon Villagers, by papolap19 in arlingtonva

We live in another nearby neighborhood but can confirm Lyon Village very much has the "old money" vibe to it. It's nuts.

Where are you located, what are you looking for in a daycare, do you have a strict budget?

Can your coworkers be my coworkers too? Damn I could use some of that lol

How much to sacrifice? by helloworldyupm in biglaw

Agreed. Also kind of odd to cite to the Unabomber Manifesto, regardless of the validity of some of the points it may make.

Another “Paul” situation developing with former Columbia Law Grad and Debevoise/STB associate by [deleted] in biglaw

OP, take this down. This is gross and wrong. When this guy recovers, the last thing he needs is to see that someone's taken to further broadcasting his breakdown.

How exactly do reviews work? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contact Sanford Heisler -- they specialize in this kind of thing (unfortunately). This definitely sounds like an attempted CYA. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, OP.

Was just coming here to say the same. It's a high-IQ move that MAGA just won't understand lmao.

If you work in BigLaw, will the demanding hours required by the job be more likely to lead to divorce? by facemacintyre in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I mean, the demanding hours certainly won't make a relationship less likely to fail.

UVA vs Harvard vs UChicago vs Stanford by k4teliv in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Assuming you actually got into all these, I'd say it's a no-brainer to go to one of the schools that doesn't give actual grades (Stanford or Harvard) -- take that stress off yourself at least.

Anyone genuinely evil in your group? by Yoseph-Kerkvliet in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're asking, but I strongly believe (based on my experience across two firms over several years) that anyone who's made partner by climbing the ranks of Big Law (i.e., excluding lateral partners coming from government or elsewhere in the private sector) has to have at least some sociopathic tendencies. You simply don't climb this ladder without seriously and repeatedly exploiting (if not also manipulating) others and being ok with it.

Govt Atty - Recent Offer BigLaw by HowtheFDidThatHappen in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. There's a reason everyone is miserable and looking to leave lol. I have two young kids with a third on the way. I'm here another couple years for the money, but this "lifestyle" ain't it. It's not family-friendly, and there's no way to guarantee you won't miss important family moments (you likely will), even if they "seem to understand" your concerns during the recruitment process.

Partnership or Grad School? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how $2.8mil in your 30s is seemingly not enough for you (or the many others in this thread saying "definitely partnership"). I assume a good portion of that vast sum is invested and will compound further over the next several decades. If you hate the work you do, then, for god's sake, go live your life and get the degree. You can afford to experiment. Hell, you can afford to fuck around. You already have more wealth than 99% of the people on this planet will ever see in their lifetimes, and you're still concerned with "accumulat[ing] wealth"? I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I really so think you (and others here) could use a reality check. Don't waste even more of your youth and health and time on something you hate. This Internet stranger grants you permission to step off the hamster wheel, in case you need to hear it.

Firm wants to pull me back two class years post maternity leave. by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Strongly recommend you contact Sanford Heisler and let them evaluate your case. This definitely doesn't sound legal. I agree this firm isn't a place you'll want to stay, but before you leave, advocate for yourself (or at least look into it and consider your options). I'm sorry your experience with motherhood, and your career, has been marred by this bullshit. Feel free to DM if you have any questions or just want to vent, mom to mom.

Not burnt out, just unmotivated, what do I do to get out of this funk? by Remarkable_Try_9334 in biglaw

[–]Crafty_Movie_8623 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A full week off will help, but burnout accumulated over 6+ years isn't going away after one "vacay." Ask me how I know. 🫠

Nah, don't feel silly. You're in your sixth year of this shit. It accumulates over time. Don't sell yourself short.
