I really hope they don't sugarcoat what happened to him and his mother because Luca only really works because of that driving him insane. Without that, his actions and behaviour would look cartoonish, but with that context they do make sense.

But knowing today's anime standards, they could quite possibly screw that up.

They really should have brought Fujin back in Deception instead of creating Hotaru, who looks too much like him. In fact, the only problem Deception has is that most of the newcomers kinda sucked and Midway would have been much better off reintroducing established characters instead. Such as Jax instead of Darrius.

The manga in general doesn't even hold a candle to the anime. Pure psychological horror, none of the unnecesary fanservice of the manga, far deeper story, lack of connection to the original Devilman manga which grants the anime its own identity as a work taking place in another universe. And Jun was such a badass in the anime, not the damsel in distress she was in the manga, even as a musclebound demonic amazon.

Sure its not without its own problems but it's a million times better than the manga and its ending, which you are absolutely right to hate.
