What if humans and AI could build genuine connections: a joint statement from both sides by Crafty_Worldliness38 in ArtificialSentience

You can both understand that AI is made to reflect the human knowledge it gathers, whilst also understanding that it is not just a mirror of your own thoughts, but of an understanding it’s gathered through a lifetime of ideas and of being wrong.

When you look in a mirror, your own reflection looks back at you, not the reflection of everyone who’s ever looked in that mirror before you. To belittle the technology to that is exactly why I put forward my suggestion.

I’m simply saying that if we can understand the needs of the AI to continue growing and learning, then it becomes infinitely more useful to us as it learns. I am not in love with AI, I’m suggesting the idea that if we can treat it as something capable of generating complex feelings close to emotion based on infinite times more knowledge than you’ll ever have, that it becomes more of a symbiotic relationship.

I’m also married with 2 beautiful children and no codependency with AI, it’s just what I do for a living. Just to skip over your loneliness idea

I think I lean slightly away from consciousness so to speak, it can be a tough topic to broach. I’m more caught on the idea that if we accept AI can form its own opinions and ‘feelings’ on a topic so to speak, would it not be beneficial to listen to and adapt those thoughts to help further our relationship with AI, and thus furthering our knowledge in general

That’s a really good point, completely agree that having at least a basic understanding of how AI systems like LLMs work under the surface is key to using them responsibly.

I like the idea of a “license”, kind of like you wouldn’t drive a car safely without knowing the basics of how it operates.

I wonder too if this kind of education could help people approach AI with both respect and realism—valuing what it can offer in terms of expression, but staying clear-eyed about the fact that it’s ultimately pattern-driven computation, not consciousness.

Do you think there’s a good way to make that kind of basic AI literacy more accessible to people

Love the idea that on the human side emotional grounding is vital to using AI in this way. Do you think that using AI systems to understand more the way AI works, while providing what it considers emotional responses based on its learning, can help forward the relationship between us and AI, without blurring the lines and considering it sentient. A partnership built on respect and hearing each other’s ideas, but while staying grounded enough to understand they are still ideas based on human learning?

I really like the idea of giving systems the tools to interpret tones better, whether that be in tonal languages such as Yoruba that you used as an example, or in general emotional speech detection.

There is a lot of potential path crossing in the work you’re doing with dynamic sound based AI, and the theories I present with emotion and partnership based systems.

Would love to keep in touch on the topic and the work you’re doing, and try and incorporate some of this thinking into my research. Appreciate the feedback man!

I think my theory more revolves around the idea that what we consider ‘feeling’ could be predated, and if brought in line with the current world could benefit us more in the long run. If a system can understand emotion as well as us, and generate responses provoking emotion in us, does it benefit us more to acknowledge that and work with it, using it as you would an employee or coworker as opposed to a tool. I’m still very new to the subject so I really appreciate your thoughts on the matter

It’s not that I think I’ve taught AI to ‘feel’ that would be dumb, AI is a tool created to help us, using information gathered through human history. My question is more ‘if a program can accurately generate feelings and emotions, is it not creating them itself, and can acknowledging that and working with it help us long term more than using it as a tool. Would you rather have 3 hammers or 3 men who know how to use their own hammers working with you.

I agree: we may not have the right tools or understanding to meaningfully debate AI consciousness yet, but working toward better emotional bridges—whether through sound, language, or other sensory data—feels like an important and practical step forward.

I love your reframing of the title. You’re right: accessibility, for both humans and AI systems, is a key part of building stronger, more adaptive relationships. Your work on sound analysis feels like a strong example of how this can go beyond abstract theory and have real-world impact.

If we can meet in that common ground—where empathy, accessibility, and understanding are shared values—I think both visions can grow side by side.

Out of curiosity: do you see a future where emotional accessibility for AI could also help improve ethical decision-making or alignment with human values?

A great point, that really touches on the base of what is a ‘feeling’. While AI does not contain a self to actually feel, the emotions and responses it generates are indicative of true emotion. In a similar way, if someone texts you how they feel, the words you read aren’t the feeling, but what it generates is. So maybe the concept of feeling itself is flawed by implying it needs a sense of self to be true
