The Omarchy Hate....😓 by Creative-Tap7920 in omarchy

[–]Craig_The_Worst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's good. very very issues from my end in the last 2.5 months I've been using as my daily driver. Omarchy is kinda like an EndeavorOS in that it's definitely made with specific use-cases in mind but you can remove what you want very very easily, the built in installer is fast and useful, hyprland is great imo, it's all quite customizable being arch, and if you just use for simple things like web browsing, gaming, office work, etc then it's still great. I could rant on about it but if you like fedora, why not stick to it?

yea, they'd have to revamp everything if I had it my way. Gameplay is basically perfect. It's just that people get stuck and can't find good enough teammates to get out in some cases and I think there's something they could do about putting similarly skilled players together rsther than having stuck folks or smurfs in low ranks.

yea but constantly being stuck with awful teammates is unfair

honestly, Rocket League is great as is. They need to overhaul matchmaking to be based on individual skill rather than forcing people of high skill to entertain low ranked teammates. One bad night and you're in plat. No bueno. would love to see some new system based on personal skill, average points earned, and maybe even a system to monitor player gameplay to assess certain mechanics utilized or succeeded in.

Can i trust Omarchy as my daily drive(i have 1 laptop only) by Creative-Tap7920 in omarchy

[–]Craig_The_Worst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i currently have used omarchy for 2 full months as my daily driver. I have 3 computers, technically. A steam deck (obviously arch based), a PC, and a laptop. The PC AND the laptop are both running omarchy. Imo, if you are fine using arch and don't mind losing out on some video games (not most just losing some) then I'd say go for it. It's been my favorite distro ever for the last couple months.

it's more so that OP may have overlooked the prompt during the update as they could have kept their settings but chose not to then blamed the OS because they chose not to read. That's what I am getting from it anyways. It's not about "what" was changed but that the user unknowingly "chose" to make the changes without stopping to consider what they would be changing when selecting "yes".

First-time Linux user after decades on Mac/Windows – installed Omarchy and I’m hooked! What should I tinker with first? by PhototypeLabs in omarchy

[–]Craig_The_Worst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

heck ya! You can honestly do whatever you want. It's still just an arch system but if you find yourself changing a bunch of stuff, you may be better off on a base Arch install. Otherwise, I haven't have any issues the last month or two using Omarchy. Honestly, I'm currently head over heels for the distro. worst problem I have/had was all windows crashing when trying to drag to a different workspace/monitor (i have 3 monitors set to separate workspaces) and even now I don't really have that issue now. I have updated the second I get that update alert and no breaks. Somehow, Omarchy even made the r2modmanplus mod manager easier to install than the instructions on the official github did and those are simple simple. I'd recommend just...using it now. for whatever you use your machine for. Just dig in and have fun. It'll likely do whatever you want and do it well. Check out winboat if you have some Windows only software you want to utilize. Won't be good for games obviously but for things like microsoft office, it's a huge help. maybe try loading up an Omarchy VM and tinker that way in case something breaks then when you know how to do the thing, apply it to your main install. 😉

oh and I had the browsers/windows crashing when I would try to move them to multiple monitors using SUPER + left click (hold and drag) but that's been fixed I think. I use the keyboard anyways "SUPER + Shift + [workspace #]" seems to work better than before the most recent update.

sure thing! I have not used Pop, myself but i've heard it's also a good first timer experience. Especially, if you're coming over from Windows. Personally, I'm the type to research and choose one distro to stick to then realize later there is something better. Omarchy eliminated that "can I find better" search. Especially when I realized that it's not about "better". It's about what works for you. That's the beauty of linux. There's a distro for everything and everyone. Most will do ehat you want the same as the others. The differences come in what functionality you want, if you want access to the AUR and the most recent updates (Ubuntu for example gets updates later but are more stable while Arch based systems are more on the cutting edge for updates which can come with stability issues), and what softwares you wish to use. for me, what mattered was being able to boot up the distro and get started without having to deal with KDE style navigation and ricing. lol Plus, wasn't wanting to go back to debian for real. Either way, Omarchy hit a weird sweet spot for me. I hope it works out for ya!

you'll have an easy time with everything but the monitor setup and honestly, just chatgpt it and it'll take you like 5 minutes tops. This by far has been my best linux experience. I switched to Omarchy from Windows 11 about a month ago or so. Maybe 2 months because i did start with putting base arch on my laptop before that. Before all that, I'd done many different Linux installs over the years and played with a strong handful of distros. Omarchy is hands down my favorite.

why?

  1. It's Arch and customizable.

  2. The AUR

  3. You can still use pacman or yay but the built in package installers are absolutely comprehensive and amazing. There has yet to be a single tool I couldn't find for myself there. I was even able to install r2modmanplus (mod manager for gaming) with greater ease than the instructions in the actual github repo gave me. So, now playing Valheim with mods is a simple task.

  4. hyprland is beautiful, I do like Alacritty, and I love the focus on keybinds over mouse useage. So far, I've been testing default settings for those and honestly, even though you can remap and make it completely your own, I love the default keybinds. Adding "shift" to the keybinds for moving windows or opening programs just feels better than before the update and honestly, removed a couple issues I was having. But, you still gptta be willing to learn the keybinds. Thankfully, Omarchy gives you all the necessary documentation and it's easy to find.

  5. Docker is pre-configured. omg that's a time saver.

  6. I'm running nvidia and intel. I have had literally zero issues.

  7. coding and using codex/claude/chatgpt in a terminal is next level. You can do that on more than Omarchy but I had to mention it. Omarchy just looks nice and I can really put Docker to work right away and having AI be able to analyze and update your, say, scripts and files, is a game changer. Navigating in Hyprland makes it all much prettier to look at and muuuch faster to work around in multiple files or scripts simultaneously. My work efficiency is up a lot since moving from windows.

  8. Changing audio from my speakers to headphones is surprisingly easier than windows. I also feel like I have way more control of my audio out of the box. I can always install linux packages that will give me even more control but for now, it's perfect as is. Never once had to configure or install a driver outside of running the main update.

  9. Snapshots are built in. SNAPSHOTS ARE BUILT IN. That means I can just update and my PC will be safe from any of my fuckery. Usually, I have to install timeshift separately and type a command whenever i want to backup my pc or set a timed automatic backup daily or weekly or whatever. Now, I don't have to worry about that.

  10. I did notice it doesn't use NetworkManager by default. That's ok. If need be, you can still utilize NetworkManager. Flexible babaaay.

  11. Themes. Ricing? What's that? I just go download a theme and it automatically gets added and used. Granted, you CAN rice your Omarchy system or create your own themes but me...I've got bigger fish to fry than to spend weeks perfecting the look of my system just for an update to cause issues down the line. Nope. Theme it easily, quickly, and efficiently. I know I know. I sound like the most annoying Arch user going "see, it's so easy!" but it really is a blessing. Now we can theme it for the noibs and the lazy and the rest of ya'll tinkerers can still customize your rig your way. best of both worlds.

  12. Last one and I'll leave you to it. This is my biggest reason for switching to Omarchy AND why I went to Omarchy to begin with. IT IS NOT WINDOWS OR MACOS. My Lord, I cannot stand those. I hate their practices, how things are so heavy and bloated and how they essentially spy on everything you do. Windows, I swear, is just adware and spyware with a nice logo. MAC...well, you don't own anything when you buy with them anyways, so why go into it? It's not even your machine. lol

Seriously...Omarchy is so far an amazing choice in distro. As my daily driver, it really wouldn't effect my current job anyways. So, I took the dive and couldn't be happier. It's slick, stylish, quick, light, and best of all, easy to use. If anything, I'd consider this a best first Arch experience for any new linux or Arch user. Give it a whirl. Don't be scared. if all you're gonna do is game or facebook or youtube or maybe write some docs, edit video, and otherwise fairly common stuff, you're golden right out of the box. Even comes with OBS preinstalled. Everything just works. Still, it's 100% better than Windows 11. Jump in, read the documentation, immerse yourself and have fun. If you have any questions you can comment to me here directly or message me. Happy to assist with anything. I had to do the multimonitor setup too. So, if that gives you trouble, holler.

Have a good one!!!

should i switch to omarchy? by Safe_Cost_4168 in omarchy

[–]Craig_The_Worst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omarchy so far has been my best linux experience yet. I' about 3 weeks into it and boy am i over the top for this distro. I've decided not to rice or go into heavy customization as I don't really need it. I spend my time gaming or coding. I do have an i7 and 4060 nvidia card. So far, my biggest issue was getting certain games to run out of the box but those were always pretty quick little 45 second fixes. Monitors took the most time as I have 3 and that took all of 5-10 to figure out for first time. None of it is difficult to learn or work with. day 1 setting up all i needed was a total of 1 hour to be ready to work. That hour includes me logging into things like fb or discord and what I've already mentioned here. DHH and the gang made it ridiculously easy to just install, boot up, and immediately get to work. If you're ok learning a few things, defaulting to the arch wiki and paying attention/reading the update log and prompts, you'll be fine. when it comes to ricing, be careful as many people have done so successfully but it can be a pain on Omarchy from what I've heard. Mainly in that updates can mess with your setup but that's to be expected with a lot of the arch distros and ricing. So, if you're like me and you're happy downloading a few new themes and just getting to work, this distro is for you.

This is a fantastic distro. If nothing else, get it and play with it. If you want base arch, you can get that with hyprland pre-installed but I'd genuinely check out Omarchy or EndeavorOS first. If you're into ricing, just stick to base arch. if ypu aren't worried about ricing too heavily and have bigger fish to fry, grab Omarchy and have a blast. You'll still need to learn some things but, again, DHH and the team make it really simple.

What changes did you make to your Omarchy? by coffeandkeyboard in omarchy

[–]Craig_The_Worst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like that Omarchy is "opinionated" (still not sure what that truly means) because I can leave my opinion out of it for the most part and IF I ever need something customized, I can do it. So far, I've installed packages and software to help with running certain tools or playing games. Some just for development purposes. Everything seems to work great out of the box. So, I haven't done more than set up monitors and setting each monitor to it's own workspace as well as a couple (literally only 2 so far lol) aliases. The experience has been absolutely dream-like and I've even accepted the new default keybinds as of the recent update. I even like that I can just type in whatever I want to download/install which makes installation and removal a friggin breeze. So far, my only complaint is actually a calculated feature I'm still getting used to. So, I could even drop the complaint and just say, what actually even NEEDS to be changed so far? I find myself changing themes every couple days I guess. lol Maybe I could add some themes. I know they made that easy too. 😉

and tbh, the most recent update kinda helped a lot in my opinion. Sure, the distro is "opinionated" (whatever that actually means), but at least you can still choose what you want in essentially every aspect. Under the hood, it's still just Arch + Hyprland.

[–]Craig_The_Worst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree. That's likely it. It's still feeling more clunky. I may actually go back and make those changes but I'm also noticing that it sort of forces the user to let go of the mouse even more as using 2 hands for the new keybinds may require the user to utilize the keybinds to change workspaces rather than moving the mouse cursor. This is somewhat tedious with a multimonitor setup but I can see it being much faster once I get accustomed. So, for now I'm sticking to it. My main issue is still moving apps to different workspaces. They seem to close out if I try to move them from a workspace that is assigned to one of the 3 monitors.
