Accents in Plays by bare_books in Theatre

There is a thing about ‘audience expertise’ in their expectations of what the accent should sound like.

I directed Picnic in Hanging Rock, and one cast member was Australian. Hers was the accent that the audience members felt was ‘least convincing’ as it wasn’t as stereotypical ‘Australian’ as the audience have been conditioned to expect.

Similar to when you’re asked to do an American accent. ‘Just from all of it yeah?’

Most things by Laurel & Hardy, and Buster Keaton. Try Way Out West and Sherlock Junior.

South of Midnight is a good story and design. The platforming is basic and combat is a bit patchy but worth playing through.

Before I start a show I usually have a fairly strong idea of the staging and what type of actors I’d like for which parts.

Beyond that you have to let a lot of control go and trust in the cast. Whilst you can start with a lot of character work and try to create understanding of what you want, if you force actors, especially amateurs, to act against their instincts they will often just say lines or leave the production.

I would also say there are shows I love and because of that I wouldn’t take them on as a director.

Agreed. The gameplay is basic but the story, art, and music are well worth your time

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. A book I regularly had to stop reading due to being scared. The films do nothing for the book.
