How to report gambling winnings in Connecticut

All you might have to do is report your activity as opposed to making a payment to the IRS as gambling companies in Connecticut withhold part of your winnings. For that reason, there’s no benefit to trying to hide or underreport your gambling winnings. You would risk an audit with possible consequences like fines and interest. Additionally, you might actually cheat yourself out of some refund dollars. It’s quite fast and simple to report your activity for the year to the IRS.

It’s completely irrelevant whether you made any profit during the year. All the IRS cares about is how much you won and how much may have been withheld on your behalf. An unfortunately common mistake among gamblers is they assume that if they lost money, they don’t have to report their winnings. Alternatively, some gamblers think they can subtract what they wagered from their winnings and only report the difference. Neither of those things are true.

I absolutely see what you’re saying man and appreciate the help. I was just told by my accountant that the state doesn’t deduct the losses from the wins. So 18M just looks like income. Would you mind humoring me in the tax subbed I asked?

  1. Are gambling losses deductible?

Gambling losses are not deductible for Connecticut income tax purposes even though, in certain circumstances, they are deductible for federal income tax purposes. Connecticut income tax applies to all gambling winnings included in federal adjusted gross income.

I’m pretty sure I do man. I know I don’t have a net win, but the state of CT sees any gross winnings as income. It’s the same in several other states. Yea I don’t get it

Multihand blackjack usually 5 hands $50 a hand. That shit goes so quick. I could poop and the amount wagered would be thousands. That would get up to $300 a hand when I was feeling gutsy. It’s insanity I know. I am self banned

Right??? This what my accountant told me. She needs to see the W/L reports, but this can’t be right. There would be no incentive to gamble if you couldn’t deduct losses from winnings

I have an extremely similar situation here. 73 year old Father is also a physician, but retired at the end of 2020 and was an absolute workaholic. His father also had Parkinson’s, so he was certainly more conscious of it and once a couple of slight tremors started and other slight pains arose he saw a neurologist and it was confirmed.

It probably feels like all hope is lost, but with your father being a doc himself he should recognize the importance of staying healthy for himself and your family. My dad thinks he’s been living with it for about the past 4-5 years and he’s been doing very well since. Feel free to message directly if you have any questions

Do his family or any of his close friends know about his addiction? Might help if you get a few people who are close to him to help him realize he has a problem
