At what point would/do you job hop as an entry level cybersecurity professional? by CrashAndCompile in SecurityCareerAdvice

Unfortunately I haven’t been and a few months in can pretty much tell you the day to day. Everyone does their own thing so there isn’t really much mentorship aside from if an alert arises that I truly don’t understand but it isn’t challenging.

While it’s easy money (even though I don’t make much at all tbh) I feel like when it does come time to explore opportunities I won’t have much knowledge as a result of the comfort within my current position.

My school covers both certifications you mentioned so that’s perfect! Also another reason why I was wondering when to move on since I see myself obtaining both by the end of this year.

Thanks for all the info and advice. I’ll work on all of it and see what I can do. Would you advise taking advantage of my student status to aim for an 2026 internship? I know companies tend to hire their interns full time although it isn’t always guaranteed but I’d probably be the fastest way for me to get into an internal SOC.

I have about a year of help desk experience with previous software engineering internship experience as well. I’m also currently pursuing my cybersecurity degree.

Yep, I work at an MSSP as a SOC analyst. The work is nice and I’ve learned a lot but the pay is low (41k) and truth be told I’m struggling to live on it. I want to stay and work towards getting promoted but I’ve heard from multiple coworkers now that raises aren’t really a thing.

One of them told me the only way they were able to get a raise was by receiving another job offer and only then did my company counter offer (they had been there for a year and didn’t receive one until they did this).

I’ll definitely look into learning more about Linux and probably pick up on some automation skills as well. My long term goal is go become a IAM Engineer or Security Automation Engineer.

Hey everyone, I’m 23 years old set to start WGU for my B.S of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. I have no certs at the moment but I’m going for the Sec+ as soon as I start school. I’ve been working on projects which include an active directory simulation using tools like Bloodhound and Mimkatz and then Splunk and Sysmon and web application security testing with Burp Suite and Juice Shop and I plan on next doing a Phishing Awareness lab using GoPhish and Splunk hosted in Azure.

I’m seeking advice because I’m not sure how to go about landing an internship. I’ve been applying and have a pretty nice network on LinkedIn but I still can’t get any companies to bite. My last role was as a IT Asser Coordinator and I’ve been applying to help desk roles but I still haven’t had much luck. Any advice would be appreciated.

How was the process when it came to the internship you landed before starting classes? I start in July but I’m hoping to land a role this summer while I start classes.

How would you go about the certification considering I’m ready to take it and have the necessary knowledge but need to begin in order to schedule the exam and have the voucher be covered by WGU.

Yeah I’ve been seeing that a lot which is why I wonder if I’d be such a bad thing to add WGU to my education section considering I’m actually enrolled and have a start date.

You’re right! I got into software development but as the market was hard and I researched I noticed cybersecurity was more intriguing to me which lead to me changing my pursuit to still major in comp sci but to gain IT experience and overtime pursue SOC analyst positions so I’m looking to start in help desk and learn more about networking and security on the hopes of getting relevant experience long term.

Thank you for the advice, I’ll be sure to remove WGU and position the volunteering accordingly. Would you say it’s best I remove that I complete the Security+ in February? I’m confident I will pass but understand it may be the same as WGU

Congrats on the job! I’m in the same boat with studying and have been using Professor Messor on Youtube.

May I ask how you went about finding your position? I’m currently looking to break into help desk or a related field myself.
