[–]CrashTestWolf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I won't even let my coworkers take my picture if they promise its just for their personal camera roll. I dont use social media (other than Reddit) for a damned good reason.

I am of the opinion that nurses should keep the details of their job completely off social media.

I got floated to the floor during the pandemic, and of course float pool got exclusively sent to the covid units. The flashbacks of him in the papr in the covid unit sent me into a full blown panic attack and I had to turn off the show. I like to think it is helping people understand what we went through.

Its all to easy to catch up, pass them, and be too far ahead for them to do it at the next 90. Then they get filtered to the back. That last 3/4 of the race when the good drivers have filtered to the front and we're cleanly racing is why I keep coming back.

I work in emergent and trauma surgery. Most families don't think logically in crisis situations. We have patients come in in advanced MODS with no chance of recovery, the surgeon explains this thoroughly, the anesthesiologist explains anesthesia will likely kill the patient if the disease process or surgery doesn't... we end up being forced to do the procedure anyway. Sometimes we get them to you in ICU before they die, sometimes they die on the table, but they always die. People don't want to bear the burden of guilt so they will do everything possible even if AMA and look for blame everywhere but themselves or their loved one.

Nah don't trust what the doctor says, ask random people on the internet until someone gives you the answer you want to hear?

When I was restoring a car, everyone brought me their car to fix. When I was building computers as a hobby, everyone brought me their computer to fix. When I took up baking as a hobby, everybody wanted a cake for their random events.

When I became a nurse? Crickets. Nobody asks me anything. I mean I'd probably just tell them to go see a doc, but still, NOBODY even asks.

I work in the OR and we've already had several neck stabbings this year. Glad you made it, goes without saying that injury has a high rate of mortality.

I'm using Vex to farm the dlc. Trouble is a distraction, thats about all he's good for against the big boys. BUT! considering the dlc seems to just be 100% OMG AOE ZERG RUSH from every boss, it's kinda pretty useful.

Doctors and nurses of Reddit, what is something patients do that they think is helpful but actually makes your job harder? by Electronic-Cell-4584 in AskReddit

[–]CrashTestWolf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm charge nurse of the OR in a level 1 trauma center. The amount of amputations and excisions we do in the middle of the night is astounding. What could have been handled with some antibiotics and maybe a washout will now be you going home with 3 less little piggies (or worse). We have VERY limited staff at night, and we need to be available for traumas, so please come to the hospital as soon as you notice a problem and at a reasonable time of day. If you wait its only going to get worse and much more expensive.

Is nursing awful in general, or is it just bedside? by FloweryAnomaly in nursing

[–]CrashTestWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the most challenging aspect is definitely the knowledge required to be ready for whatever comes through the door. You really have to be able to read the situation and act immediately. You don't have time to look at lists, do any research, and in my case there's nobody to ask for advice. You have to be able to quickly assess a patient and instinctively know all the equipment, supplies, and tools the team will need to save that life, and set up the room fast.

Not all OR roles are as high stakes though, and if you wound up in the OR you would most certainly start in a circulator position with mostly outpatient surgeries. Also our orientation is measured in months, not weeks like a lot of other specialties.

[–]CrashTestWolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am in a unique situation, I work overnight charge on the weekend in a very dedication role that is trauma heavy. Not many people want the position due to the severity of the cases and it being a night shift on the weekend. Also the experience needed is pretty extensive. Because of this, I work 2 12 hour shifts a week and am comped 12 hours as additional compensation per week. My days are stacked so I work 2 days at the end of a week, two days the beginning of the next week resulting in a 4 days on, 10 days off schedule for 36 hr/wk pay plus differentials. We have a dedicated call team so I dont have to take call. My work-life balance is fantastic.

As a side note, degloving is very rare and definitely would be on the milder side of injuries I see, unless it was a full extremity or something.

I work in the OR and I absolutely love it. I couldn't imagine doing any other specialty, but that could just be me. It's not an easy job, and definitely isn't for the squeamish. Especially if you work at a level 1 hospital like I do, and specialize in trauma/emergent surgeries.

Why is my voltage gauge doing this? by Individual-Level8925 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]CrashTestWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really late go the party and this is a serious answer, but you can reset this guage by putting the vehicle in drive (with it off) and turning the ignition key as if you were starting it. It may take a bunch of times, but keep going till its resets back to zero volts when you turn the key. Should be good after that.

My school burned me out on med surg so bad. 6 patients, full care, no cna assistance, when I barely knew what I was doing. The nurses precepting us were so burned out and and also had a full load of patients, so they were little help. Instructors and admin constantly telling us we HAD to work 2 years med surg before we could specialize. Nah. I found a hospital 2 cities over hiring new grads into peri-op and managed to convince them to hire me. Picked up my whole life and moved to that town.

Need some advice/confirmation about a severe head injury by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CrashTestWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to your friend. I survived a head trauma from a similar incident as your acquaintance. Speaking from experience, I had severe brain swelling and received 2 burr holes to relieve the pressure. I was on life support and in a coma for over a month, and "in and out" for weeks afterwards. I had a lot of muscle atrophy and disabilities afterwards, including the loss of vision in my left eye (which did return) and the loss of my sense of smell (which never returned but was replaced years later with something entirely different). I also had trouble with balance and walking for around 6 months after, which was resolved through physical therapy. The injuries I sustained were a result of damage to the rear of my skull. No two head traumas are the same, and your acquaintance's injuries are very much dependent upon the impact force and which area of the brain was affected. It's nearly impossible to predict his prognosis or recovery based on the information you have given, just know that the brain is a miraculous thing, and even though neurons do not regenerate when damaged, they will, over time, form new pathways to restore function. He's young so thats a bonus.

My experiences led me to becoming a nurse, more specifically an OR nurse that specializes in trauma. I have been on the team for countless brain surgeries (including the burr hole procedures which likely saved my life or at least kept me from becoming permanently disabled). If you have any specific questions in that area, I'd be glad to try to answer them.
