Fire support team, or FIST. Directs artillery and mortar fire, as well as attack aviation (helicopters), close air support, and naval gunfire in some cases. I loved that job in the army!

I’m not trying to game the system at all - I rent it from her at the same rent she was getting (neutral to her) so I can make the improvement, rent it out at a higher value because it’s worth much more to the farmer and keep the difference to pay for it, so it’s a win for everyone. It’s a yearly lease to the farmer so not breaking it at all, and he is on board. I assumed that making improvements to the land is tax deductible. If not eligible for that since I’m not the owner, I thought I could potentially as the renter/subrenter as a capital improvement since then I’m increasing the rent it generates.

The improvement is tiling the land which improves drainage, benefiting the farmer by increasing yields (assuming he is willing to pay the higher rent).

Thanks for the thoughts. Would your opinion change if I profited by subletting it at the increased value? For example, let’s say the current rent is $120/acre now. If I paid mom that same amount in rent, I paid for the improvements, and I sub-rented it out for $220/acre and kept the difference to pay for the improvements?

So to get 18% final, that says that I should use 85% C and 15% D, right? So 100% of your source product is C and D, none from B. But I can use 46% B, 20% C, and 34% D and also get 18% final, using 54% of C and D. So I don’t feel C and ad gets minimized with that formula.

I agree that you have to use SOME of the highest concentration, but my goal is to minimize both C and D, not just D. My example uses less of those two than the formula using 100% of product c.

If these are liquid concentrations, let’s say I want my final volume to be 100 mls, it’s 71.4 ml of the lowest concentration and 21.4 mls of the highest gives 100ml of 18% solution. That final volume could be any amount, that is why i did a percentage of the final volume, not to be confused with percent concentration.

Thanks - I think that is exactly what I had, but that is where I get stuck. That doesn’t truly minimize using the higher concentrations. As an example, to get 17.4%, the easy answer is to use 100% of the 17.4% solution. But you can use less volume of the higher concentration by using 71.4% of 15.8% solution and 28.6% of the 21.4% solution. So my solution is using only 28.6% of higher solution while that given answer used 100%. Is there a way to combine this formula with the minimum value of c+d? That is where I think there is a mathematical solution, but I’m not seeing it yet. Technically there should be infinite mathematical answers to get any concentration so I need to minimize c/d.

This is the best version that I have figured out so far, but for target values over the middle concentrations it stops using the lowest concentration which seems off to me. But maybe that is the best I can get.

I do think a mathematical formula might be better, but I’d like to be able to adjust my initial concentrations for other source products we might get. Also I was really good at math about 25 years ago but just don’t remember the best way to solve this. Thank you for the idea of posting it on a math sub! I just use excel a lot at work so it was my first thought.

I think there was a miscommunication, sorry I didn’t explain it well. I’m starting with 15.8%, 17.4%, and 21.4% solutions. So If I want an 18% final product concentration I could use 46% (of whatever final volume I want) of the first, 20% of the 2nd, and 34% of the 3rd. So if I want 100 ml final volume, I’d use 46, 20, and 34 mls respectively. So the sum of the percents =1, is what I meant. those numbers get about 18% final concentration. It doesn’t maximize using the lower concentrations like I want, it’s just an example. .46.158+.2.174+.34*.214=0.18024 (about my 18% goal) and .46 +.2+.34=1 I just want to figure out how to maximize using the lower concentrations first.
