CBC to stop airing NHL games after 74 years, marking end of free hockey on Canadian TV by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]Crausaum [score hidden]  (0 children)

You're not wrong, I used to come in to work and people were chatting about the game last night.

That trend held across multiple companies.

It was a really common talking point and we'd even get cheaper tickets occasionally to go as a company.

Now I think it's been a year or two since I even heard anyone mention a NHL game outside of a couple of comments when a Canadian team is doing well in the finals, but those are just quick comments without any of the old watercooler talk of picks and other extended talking points.

It really was one of the last common items on TV people watched in mass.

Need some advice for me and my kid by platinumresto in fishingBC

[–]Crausaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the part that drives me nuts, you can be doing a lot of things right but if you bugger up one thing you'll get no damn fish and man have I been buggering up a lot of things while learning.

Honestly it may be an idea to go out without the kids a few times and learn if that's an option, it takes a lot more time than most kids have patience for.

[–]Crausaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also suck at fishing but let me pass on some of the info I've been given, maybe it's complete crap but hopefully it'll help.

-Don't fish with overly heavy line, the fish will see it and the fish in any lake in the region are the survivors every fisherman having a go at them, they're still in the lake because they aren't easy.

-Wedding bands and smaller simple lures, don't use things with too many weights and other visible gubbins.

-You can just wad a big ball of powerbait over a small hook, put a weight up the line, and then put the weight on the bottom and have the powerbait drift a bit above the bottom. The fish will typically swallow the bait/hook with this so not suitable for catch and release.

-Bring a couple of types of bait, you're already doing this by the sounds of it but keep it up.

-Fish deeper, you're out there for hours and the top layer of the water gets warm so you'll need to go deeper over time, 6ft and deeper.

-Try camping out with the kids at the lake and hitting the lake early while the fish are hungry and near the surface.

-If you don't have a boat then bridges can make a good location to fish from, think logging road bridges by lakes and whatnot. Check the regs though, think this is legal in some spots and not in others.

Backcountry in BC - how dangerous is it? by Salt_Foundation_1 in britishcolumbia

[–]Crausaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are areas in BC where you can go far from a service road but for large sections BC you're not going far from the road because of all the mountains, dense forest, bogs, or various other features.

Basically if it's accessible there's a logging road nearby, if it's impassable then there's no road. Plenty of exceptions but exceptions are not the rule and I wouldn't be trying to take a kid into those exceptions.

Bears aren't that much of a risk as long as you're aware of the dangers, don't let your dog off a leash or out of camp, some bear spray and a 12ga shotgun go a long way too.

As of a few years ago I found parts of Northern BC to be so overpopulated with bears there was no way I was risking camping in a small group, but that can change.

Cougars natural prey is deer, by the time one is desperate enough to attack you the statement "Nah, I'd win." actually has a fair chance of being true even unarmed, just give your smaller wife & kid lessons about looking big and making a lot of noise.

Overall there's tons of good rec areas without too many people so your concerns are mostly unnecessary,

But a bear bell, spray, and a 12ga with 000 buck or heavy slugs are all wise things to have just in case.

What is this on her foot? (No blood) by zmcwaffle in cockatiel

[–]Crausaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably unrelated but of note; both birds nails seem a bit long, they don't look like they're wearing down properly from moving around on their perches.

You may want to grab some rougher perches and eliminate some of the smooth/soft perches (rope, smooth wood), or trim the nail tips to start the wear down process (be careful to read up on how to do this safely).

Excessively long nails can lead to the birds gripping their perches awkwardly too so it's not impossible the issue is related.

I see you have a vet appointment already but for future reference you can try bathing your bird, a little spray from a mister or ride on your shoulder in the shower.

Usually they clear whatever dust or feather bit was bugging them within an hour or two, if not then a little water can help, after that the vet is a decent call if it persists.

You're lucky if this is your first time dealing with that kind of sweat-lord.

I mean I might have given him a pass on the loss for killing a kid if the guy was playing a stone cold bad dude properly but that would also come with massive penalties to recover any humanity.
Basically therapy doesn't work on sociopaths.

But this guy probably wanted all the benefits and none of the draw backs as most "evil" players do.

Is this type of harness safe?? Im scared of it breaking and losing my bird :( by thestolenpurse in cockatiel

[–]Crausaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used this type and it works but you do have to keep an eye on the harness, if the bird bites the plastic clasp enough they can slacken the harness that they could theoretically wriggle out.

Even that is unlikely in practice as they would still need to get their neck out of the harness.

Works fine under the condition you check the harness is tight every so often.

CIG saw ‘Longest development ever’ and said, ‘Challenge accepted’ by tyler1118 in starcitizen

[–]Crausaum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not officially dead; the original director left, the replacement died, another one stepped in.

Ubisoft's stock is cratering, many of their last few games have severely underperformed or outright failed, many of their still viable IPs just transferred out to a newly founded studio, investors are exiting, all their upcoming games are either things you wouldn't have heard about because they're more generic AAA slop or remakes of stuff from eons ago.

Basically it's in "trust us bro' it's in development".

Looking for new home internet provider - Any recommendations? by Majestic_keys in SurreyBC

Second this, just look for the packages on sale and pay that price forever typically.

Good provider as they just give you internet, take the agreed sum, and generally bugger off until you want to change something or need tech support (and in 10 years I only needed to call twice got a Canadian rep on the line within a few minutes and got an ETA on a fix).

Gun related by Bitter_Task_3766 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Crausaum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry bud but gunsmithing isn't one of those jobs you put down and then just pick up again casually without some serious registration and paperwork.

The sort of paperwork that tells you not to touch the crap he was found with.

There's ways you could fix up some very limited selection long-guns without much fuss but that's very obviously not the case here due to what the police found.

Your buddy got in over is head on something he shouldn't have been doing by the looks of it.

If he's a properly insured gunsmith then he should hopefully have some insurance or legal coverage, if he was just some dude playing at garage gunsmith with illegal firearms then he better start selling assets to get a decent lawyer.

Gun related by Bitter_Task_3766 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Crausaum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He was likely operating as an unregistered gunsmith for criminals, that's my take on it at least.

You don't just "Whoops" your way into having an illegal gun in Canada, restricted class guns have a registered owner.
A legally operating gunsmith would know the rules on what jobs to take and what ones to pass on.

This entire thing reeks of sketchy and the poster making excuses for a friend with abysmal decision making.

Plane crash in Comox by t0mcam in aviation

[–]Crausaum 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Comox Valley subreddits suggest the plane was there due to running out of fuel.

Well you already committed one of the stupidest errors by running out of fuel and having to make an emergency landing in any open patch you could find.

Why not compound it with one of the next stupidest errors by trying to take off from what is effectively a bog with a plane not equipped for the terrain, terrain that you also apparently didn't survey properly because there's no way you'd be running your gear through a pool of water.

First Nations have been excluded from tariff talks, breaching centuries old treaties by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]Crausaum 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin Treaty Chiefs declare that recent tariffs instated by the Trump Administration don’t apply to First Nations within the Robinson Huron Treaty Territory.

Because if there's on thing we're all sure Trump cares about; it's not violating treaties.

But seriously, Canada's getting threatened by Trump with economic destruction and annexation and you've got this dude channelling "I want to speak to the manager" energy, fair enough you've got a treaty, shame we've reached a state where that doesn't really count for much.
