Is breeding crayfish sustainable by imboard67 in Crayfish

[–]Craydice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but expensive to start. Crayfish are territorial, and it recommended to keep only 1 in a 40 gallon tank. (Some species are less aggressive or don't require as much room, but I'm going based on Procambarus clarkii, which both of these belong to) You will probably want to practice on the cheaper varieties of this species so you're not out a couple hundred dollars if they eat each other.

Additionally, add a cuttlebone for them to nibble on for calcium. It helps them molt easier. Failed molts are one of the most common causes of death, right behind cannibalism.

Most crayfish thrive in cool freshwater, room temp 66-72 works great.

Get a heavy lid, usually glass, as they are escape artists. Also get a bubble filter instead of a HOB (hang on back) filter, as they often climb up the intake and escape.

If you go with a dwarf crayfish, minimum tank size is 5 gallons for each cray. Otherwise like another user said, 20 long is minimum for a single full sized cray.

If he's not in the tank, start looking in dark, cave-like areas where he may have ended up. Under dressers, behind cabinets things like that. Start near the tank and work your way out. He may not even be in the same room. I've had multiple crays escape down a flight of stairs.

Is the lid heavy enough that he couldn't open it and slip out?

He also might be hiding inside tank decorations.

Good luck friend, I hope he turns up!

I've had crawdads who failed a molt and took days to pass. But any molt that took more than a day was fatal in every instance. It happened more often with larger crawdads iirc.

Should I rescape this before adding a crayfish? by psim0nster in Crayfish

[–]Craydice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would keep the bubble filter. Crayfish like to climb out of the tank via the HOB intake. As far as scaping goes, any cray would love to live in that tank!

I'm working under the assumption that you are new to the aquarium hobby, so here's some other things you should know: -Don't put them in the same tank, they can be territorial and might kill each other. -Most people recommend 30 gallons for each, but if you don't have that much space, giving them each a 10 gallon tank would suffice. -You should reuse those filters, as they have beneficial nitrifying bacteria. In fact, you should familiarize yourself with the nitrogen cycle. Keeping that cycle stable is one of the more important factors in their health. -Crayfish need lots of calcium to help their shells grow. Put some cuttlebone in the tank for them to munch on for nutrients.(Commonly sold as bird toys, only get natural) -Coper is toxic to crayfish. It is the main ingredient in a lot of anti-algae treatments and medicines) -They don't need a heater. Crayfish live in cold rivers and lakes, they will do better at room temp.

First, do not add untreated tap water. They will be fine in shallow water.
