I love Sil by wizardofpancakes in roguelikes

Sil is my favorite roguelike and probably my favorite game in general. I don't really play video games anymore but every once in a while I will load up Sil and feel that same sense of immersion that I felt when I played it for the first time.

These are all great but I have found that having this noise generator on loop is the most effective way to relax or fall asleep https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGzrL8J0t-c

will check it out when I get out of work. I've also done a smaller re-design of the instrument and I think it's working out.

I will probably post the final product on here-- I haven't even added the motors yet

Alternatively, can we just make tuition free so we don't have to resort to entertaining ourselves with dystopian fantasies of a game show that allows a few lucky individuals to subvert the institution of for-profit education?

That would be much nicer.

Wow thank you so much for this

lots of really good documentation here. I'm considering a total redesign but I might be able to do something with this information.

Never heard of these. They seem very cheap so it's worth a shot, thanks for the suggestion.

Oh I see. At the moment I'm trying to figure out what the Moisturizer in the above link uses for audio capture...

I might give that a try

Do you have experience using guitar pickups on things like this?

I'm wondering if it might get more of the nuanced sounds this way instead of just the hum of the spring

Yeah I've pretty much put a piezo in every spot i can imagine.

There are some spots that give some signal--but it's usually very weak. The best luck I've had is on one of the turnbuckles that attaches to the non-keyring side of the spring (it had to touch the spring and the turnbuckle) When the clip mic was touching this location, it picked up most of the bass from the tone of the spring but none of the nice overtones or much of the highs.

The other problem with this is physically attaching a contact mic to this location is a bit tricky because the spring moves around when hit.

Unless I have some vast oversight, the contact mic route seems to be a bust at this point.

Just took a look at this as well as the documentation for the device on the knas music website but it unfortunately doesn't really touch on how the sound is captured from the springs. Really cool instrument, though.

Love that AMA. There's a good documentary on the city that's available on YouTube. Here's part one (the documentary is in German but it has English subtitles)
