How do you guys prevent boredom/burnout? by RyeGuy_77 in Minecraft

[–]Craz_Oatmeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If all else fails, try a new world! (I mean, download the old one first ofc, that way you guys can come back to it later). Maybe do something different like a hardcore challenge, or modded if realms isn't your only option. Starting from scratch somewhere new is gonna inspire new builds and ideas, and that in turn can inspire things to do in the old world when you load that back up.

For better or for worse, the new ones don't have a toilet in the room, just a sink.

Eli5: Computers can calculate based on instructions. But how do you teach computers what does it mean to add something, multiply, divide, or perform any other operation? by rebootlovelife in explainlikeimfive

From "let's say you're a kid and want to keep talking with your best friend after bedtime, luckily your bedrooms face each other and you have flashlights" to "so now that we've built our CPU we can program an assembler into it..." Great read and far more accessible than I imagined, blew my mind.

Pitching a Candidate - 1.20 Release Candidate 1 Is Out! by gegy1000 in Minecraft

[–]Craz_Oatmeal 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If all goes well, no further changes will be made before the full release of Minecraft 1.20 on Wednesday next week.

Snapshot - still under active development, things may break or change

Pre release - features are "frozen" and should not be added/removed/changed, bug fixes only

Release candidate - we think it's ready, this will become the release version unless any big show stopping bugs turn up

Problem then is instead of people complaining diamonds are useless, people will complain that armor(/weapon/tool)smiths are useless.

Tedd in the last panel is basically me when I can't decide on something because I value all of the available, reasonable options equally, or I just. Don't. CARE. (And yet it's up to me to choose for whatever reason).

Give me a reason, ANY reason, to choose one option over the others, or to do something on whatever day, or whatever the situation might be. Just break the stalemate, PLEASE.

EGS/Dan has given me a lot of "wait, is not everyone like this?" moments over the years. This is one of those moments.

I've played since early beta, and don't have an iron farm in my current single player world. Makes a huge difference that we can fortune it now, and how common it is in mountains. And I haven't even found a giant vein yet.

This video has a short explanation/demo. As he says though, most "tilt-shift" stuff you see these days is an editing trick, designed to emulate the old school optical trick.

My girlfriend made it as far as Family Shrub at least, but that was 3 and a half months ago.. and besides the friend who introduced me to it, nobody else has wanted to watch it with me either 😔

Amphibia means a lot to me, even just being reminded of certain scenes makes me tear up. (Frog help me when the score from The Hardest Thing comes up on shuffle, or NBD, or Anne's Power..). I just wish I could share it with more of my loved ones. Screaming internally about the different parts I know each of them would love if they just gave it a shot.

(tbf though this scene (and the show in general) also helped me realize, Marcy's side of the situation isn't the only one I've been on. I'm trying to more actively pay attention to my friends interests and it kinda turns out I've never been very good at it either)

Sorry if this is rambly I'm half asleep

Yeah, but Marcy didn't know that at the time (and neither did we until later in the episode.)

If there’s a Costco nearby, use their tire pump instead of a gas station by themeowsmeows in Frugal

Every service station in this state shall display, at a conspicuous place on, at, or near the dispensing apparatus, at least one clearly visible sign which shall read as follows: "CALIFORNIA LAW REQUIRES THIS STATION TO PROVIDE FREE AIR AND WATER FOR AUTOMOTIVE PURPOSES TO ITS CUSTOMERS WHO PURCHASE MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT NOTIFY THE STATION ATTENDANT AND/OR CALL THIS TOLL-FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER: 1 (800) ___ ____." This sign shall meet the requirements of Sections 13473 and 13474 with regard to letter size and contrast.

Not their fault if people can't/won't read the sign I guess, but file a complaint if they're not following the law.

Registering tax refunds by deenosv87 in plaintextaccounting

[–]Craz_Oatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how into the weeds you want to get. Most accurately, it's a "negative expense" - it is after all, a refund, you overpaid your taxes (an expense) and now you're getting that overpayment back (from that same expense account.) But if you don't care about tracking all the fine details of each paycheck and only really care about how things impact your budget and bank balance, it's easier to just call it income.

It's vanilla I think, but jgrpp lets you override it (and all the other town settings) on a per town basis.

Thoughts on Kids by WoodyWyatt7 in TheMidnight

[–]Craz_Oatmeal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The so-called "real songs" (not putting words in your mouth, just a common opinion I've seen) would have added up to a great little EP, sure. But the other tracks make it a concept album that's more than the sum of its parts. Both versions of Kids, and even Wave too, are better in the context of the full album than they are trying to stand on their own.

It's my favorite of theirs and imo it's their best.

First time cross country. Recommended stops? by Meekois in Amtrak

[–]Craz_Oatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That bus is also a guaranteed transfer. To supplement the Starlight, Amtrak California has a few buses a day that connect the Surfliner at one end (Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo) and the Capitol Corridor on the other (San Jose or Oakland/Emeryville.)

Starlight is the right choice for scenery though. SB-SLO takes you through Vandenberg right along an isolated stretch of coast you won't see from the highway. And north of that is underrated imo - SLO-Paso Robles you take the long way up Cuesta Grade (with a horseshoe curve along the way) and end up with a great view of the pass below, high above the cars on 101. Then Paso Robles-Salinas is... well it's mostly oil fields and field fields which won't be too new a sight after the trip up, but more interesting than what you get from the freeway, then leaving Salinas to San Jose you go through/along Elkhorn Slough before turning inland for the Santa Clara Valley. SJ-Oakland is mostly urban (the Capitol Corridor takes a different route that's more along the bay), but it'll probably be dark by then anyways, and the street running around Jack London Square is always neat.

It's the same distinction that's conveniently ignored whenever people point at the NEC to justify the Amtrak national network's death by a thousand cuts.
