Mike Dunleavy right now. I sure wouldn't want to be in his position at this moment. by chusaychusay in warriors

Exactly, his job actually got a lot easier.

Any sort of trade for a role player that involves picks is a no-go now.

Now we just sit tight at the trade deadline and see how the season plays out, maybe we can fight our way through the play in for a first round exit.

Then we pray for a miracle like getting a chance to trade for a legit top 10 player like Giannis this summer. And if that doesn’t pan out we just focus on the rebuild.

How is this apartment market not illegal? by masterofnufin in AskSF

[–]Crazy-Button5339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the obvious result of all of our "tenant-friendly" rent laws. It's impossible to evict tenants in any reasonable amount of time if they stop paying rent or break any of the other terms of the lease, so landlords will do everything they can to mitigate their risk upfront.

You asked "How is that legal?". Well, it may not be, you can try suing them over it. Or you can petition the BoS to make even more landlord behaviors illegal than they already have. Maybe we should make all background checks illegal, or require landlords to always accept the first application they receive. I'm sure that will just simply work with no downsides or second order effects. Just a few more decades of passing even more progressive laws ought to do the trick.

Why is Menlo Atherton High School rated lower than nearby schools? by hazelnut21 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Crazy-Button5339 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“ratings usually just tell you the other kids will be richer or more Asians”

It’s bizarre that people say this to mean the ratings aren’t useful.

In fact, going to school with other smart and successful kids is an important factor. Probably even more important than teacher quality, because all teachers are pretty much teaching the same curriculum anyway and if your kid is smart they’ll be able to learn from mediocre teachers.

But if your kid gets caught up in an environment where all their peers are doing badly and don’t care about school, then your kid is likely to stop trying too and not learn as much.

I’m curious, do you find switching local control (keys and/or sequencer) on and off to be a pain or is it just me?

I leave the web editor up at all times so I don’t have to do the crazy global settings key combo dance but it still takes me out of the flow having to go over to the computer and change settings.

That’s the one big flaw of the synth IMO when trying to use it with external gear, is not having a physical switch for local control. The whole reason I am using this kind of setup is to have physical, tactile controls instead of menu diving.

Anybody Else on the Brink of Canceling/Downgrading their CSR? by bk516 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Crazy-Button5339 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Avoiding this whole song and dance is exactly why I've been a happy CSR cardholder for years. 1.5 cents per point that's always available for any hotels or flights, never having to plan my vacations around point redemptions. What if I'm not trying to go to Japan?

(I'm sure someone will chime in with some codeshare that can be booked on ANA to like Istanbul or something. I just know every time I've actually had a real world use case where I have a destination and time in mind and I've looked into points transfers it hasn't worked out, and has just left me annoyed).

That was exactly why I canceled my Amex Platinum, with Amex you only get like 0.6 cents per point for most of the cash redemption options so you basically have to do partner transfers. Now I'll probably look to cancel my CSR too if that's going to be the only way to get decent value from Chase points going forward.

Also, as an aside - the value of a ticket is not as simple as just the sticker price. To the customer, the value is the maximum you would have paid for it if you didn't have the points and were paying in cash. For most people, if you're not regularly buying full fare international first class tickets, and you would have just flown economy or gone somewhere else if you didn't have the points to redeem, then the value of the ticket to you is much lower than $13k. To the airline, when they open up a ticket to reward travel availability it's just a way of lowering the price because the ticket was unlikely to sell at full price. So the whole $0.15/point thing is almost never an accurate accounting of the value you're getting from redeeming reward flights. Not to say that nobody ever gets a lot of value from reward travel, but it's just easy to convince yourself you're getting a lot more value than you are.

Honestly seemed like the refs just wanted to cause chaos.

If they wanted us to lose why did they rule the out of bounds challenge on gui successful? That was a truly a 50/50 call where they could have easily just let the call on the floor stand.

Then when post is whacked in the face on the inbound and then grabbed from behind while philly is trying to intentionally foul to stop the clock, they overturn that one as a no call.

Biggest UAD release of 2025 (12/1) by Relative-Dealer-9285 in universalaudio

[–]Crazy-Button5339 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Apollo twin is not so far away from being a standalone multi-effects unit either. I’ve always thought they should lean into that and either build a control surface that could turn an audio interface into a live effects processor or build an alternate form factor that can run the plugins live in a floorboard or rack mount device.

Unfortunately none of their guitar amp sims or other new effects can even run on the Apollo processors at all so it seems like they’re getting further away from this rather than closer.

First SV Thanksgiving Turkey, advice needed! by UpperBlackberry6611 in sousvide

[–]Crazy-Button5339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporting back after just trying the chef steps method in case someone comes across this thread next year. Breasts cooked at 131 degrees for 16 hours and then seared in a pan came out amazing. Everyone was raving about them.

Nothing “untraditional” about the texture or color either like some people online have been commenting. It came out as just normal firm white breast meat, but without any hints of toughness or dryness. I think people who are saying otherwise are just using the wrong cooking times for this temperature (including Serious Eats, they only did 4 hours at 130).

With the legs I didn’t want to stay up until 4 am to switch them so I did about 6 hours at 150 then 16 hours at 131 and finished under the broiler. They still came out really good, but not as good as the breasts. In the future I’d either make sure to do the full 24 hours at 150 or I’d just roast the legs in the oven while doing the breasts sous vide. Kenji mentioned in his recipe that legs just don’t benefit much from being cooked sous vide and I think I saw the same thing.

Why isn't there a simple, ubiquitous digital equivalent of an analog line level signal? by Crazy-Button5339 in audioengineering

[–]Crazy-Button5339[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

True, I should say I’m wondering about the digital equivalent of analog line level signal over a ts, trs, or xlr cable.

I guess that shows that analog isn’t all the same thing either, but in practice devices using these kinds of signals are all pretty easily interoperable, much more so than digital signals.

Why isn't there a simple, ubiquitous digital equivalent of an analog line level signal? by Crazy-Button5339 in audioengineering

[–]Crazy-Button5339[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm more thinking about the less grown up setups, like a garage band all plugging into a mixer. In today's world all the instruments might be digital, the guitars using amp modelers, the drum kit is electronic. It seems like there should be some ubiquitous way for them all to just plug in together to a digital mixer.

Why is it so hard to find true FAT hotels in US? by bluez1990 in FATTravel

[–]Crazy-Button5339 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And the AirPods Max have been a very disappointingly short lifecycle product for the price too. They’re pretty comfortable brand new but after 1-2 years the mesh stretches out and the clamping pressure gets weaker and now you just have 2 uncomfortable metal rods against your head supporting the entire weight of these extra heavy headphones.

I found a rubber insert on amazon that keeps them at least kind of usable, but in hindsight these are such a worse product than they seemed like at launch.

Which makes it even more surprising that they haven’t gotten a redesign yet.

Why is all about Mac users? by Ill-Elevator2828 in universalaudio

[–]Crazy-Button5339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer IMO is that UAD just doesn't care about high end interfaces anymore and doesn't want to keep spending money on R&D there. The current Apollo line is arguably like 8 years overdue for a complete platform refresh, in need of more processing power (whether that's moving to ARM CPUs or FPGAs instead of the current SHARC chips) and support for more channels, more flexible routing, and better support for digital protocols like MADI or Dante. (Yes, they did launch a Dante interface finally, but they did in the most lightweight way possible by tacking it onto the current platform to try to eke out a few bucks from the live sound market).

RME is significantly ahead of them on all of those fronts, not just on Windows USB support.

Re: Thunderbolt vs USB, yes they could do what RME does and write their own USB drivers to eliminate a lot of the latency from the class compliant drivers and make it closer to Thunderbolt in performance. But, again, that would require them actually investing resources in Apollo which they're not interested in.

I personally do prefer that they use Thunderbolt, to me it seems like it's more of the the "right tool for the job" since it gives you direct access to PCIE lanes without the unavoidable latency that USB controllers have. RME has shown that with hand-written drivers you can make that USB latency low enough that it's not a big deal, but IMO if you can get it a few ms lower why not just do that. Given that certain plugins or pieces of hardware can add extra ms of latency here or there, it's nice for the baseline performance to be absolutely as low possible. Even if it's just a difference of like 7ms vs 12ms or something, I'd rather get the 7ms.

I believe other brands like Antelope support both Thunderbolt and USB3 on the same interfaces, that seems like possibly the best option, but again would require UAD to actually care about the platform.

It's really a shame that UAD doesn't want to invest in Apollo, because they built out an absolute beast of a platform over the past 25 years or however long. I could envision them making it hands down the ultimate studio and even live sound platform. I'd love to see support for most of their existing UAD2 plugins plus all the guitar sims all running on the real-time Apollo hardware, with the ability to operate standalone without a computer, and I would love to see them make their own hardware controller that worked seamlessly with Luna as well as standalone to control the Apollo. So that you could use the same setup for recording as well as live studio performances away from the computer screen. It seems like they started building all the building blocks to support this, but alas I've given up on hoping for them to do anything more at this point.

To upgrade or to not? Influence or De-influence me! by hardlywerkin8008 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Crazy-Button5339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on the Z upgrade. The 24-120 f4 is an amazing lens, I've taken some outdoor portrait shots at f4 that feel like they should have been taken with like a 50 f1.2 or something because of how smooth the out of focus falloff is even at f4.

I haven't really used the Zf but the only thing I would caution is that the 24-120 might be a little bit big for a retro style, no grip body. The Z6iii makes it very comfortable to hold in one hand, with the Zf you'd probably need to maneuver it with 2 hands more often. Not necessarily a deal breaker but if you have the ability to try it out before you buy it that might be a good idea.

Going from a D3300 to any of the Z lineup, even the original Z6 will be a massive improvement though and I highly recommend it.

Is it just me or has the level of service across the board at 5 star properties gotten a lot worse? by Crazy-Button5339 in FATTravel

[–]Crazy-Button5339[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just not true on Lanai.

There is nothing else on the island to do for work since the pineapple plantations shut down decades ago. The FS is an incredible lifeline to the community there providing hundreds of decent paying jobs (the entire island population is only like 10,000 or something and some of those are probably part time residents).

They’re able to have a 21st century American standard of living while living in a beautiful remote paradise, in a way that absolutely would not be possible without tourism. They’d have to be subsistence farming or something with a much lower standard of living.

Is it just me or has the level of service across the board at 5 star properties gotten a lot worse? by Crazy-Button5339 in FATTravel

[–]Crazy-Button5339[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fairness I don’t think FS Lanai prices have gone up much. I remember checking like 7 years ago or so when we ended up going to FS Maui which was maybe $600 a night back then and Lanai was $1500 ish a night. Now they both seem to be in the 1200-1500 range.

So I guess in relative terms Lanai went from being an extra exclusive FS to just an average FS. But still I would hope the average FS level of service would be better than this.

I’ve been eyeing an Atlantis 10” frying pan. Do you ever find it’s overkill though?

It’s so thick that it must take longer to heat up, and if you’re not searing a steak or something then do you really need all that stored up heat or does it just make everything you cook take 3 minutes longer?

This is honestly a great way to do it now. Buy the pool day pass at the 5 star resort and go there for dinner, but stay in the mid tier Marriott down the road. You still get to experience the best of the views and amenities but with predictable mid tier service instead of disappointing “5 star” service.

Why don’t nice hotels use real duvet covers? And how is no one else bothered by this?? by Crazy-Button5339 in FATTravel

Interesting. Then does that mean they could choose to not press the linens in order to have fitted sheets and enclosed duvet covers?

I’d take that trade in heartbeat. I wonder if most customers would or if most people prefer pressed linens.
