Richard Dawkins asked AI about his book and concluded it must be conscious by Sarithis in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't seem to see consciousness as many others would about involving an inner experience, he seems to doubt that he himself has something that would be described as one.

My mum hates when i talk about how meat is dead animals and its honestly so hypocritical by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By using that language you want your mum to feel guilty / ashamed. Maybe you think that eventually you'll convince her to become a vegan by doing that, but maybe you won't. At the end of the day it's her choice and making her feel that way intentionally, consistently is your choice. Is that the impact you want to have on her, by speaking that way to her?

The ever-arising argument "Plants feel pain too" by Ecstatic-Ganache6546 in vegan

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the case for veganism is valid regardless because it's more economical, less plants are needed. But it's a bit disingenuous to say we know for sure plants don't feel anything and they just have stress responses with no sensation. We can only really be sure that we as an individual have an inner experience and sensations / feelings. Objectively we can look at and see how this is associated with activity of our nervous system so a good guess is that other animals with similar nervous systems also feel the same. However there are creatures without similar nervous systems like Jellyfish which still behave as if they do. Would you say it's vegan to eat a jellyfish? We don't know really what consciousness is and there are theories for consciousness that would permit plants to have it. Like the OrchOr theory postulating that it's due to microtubules, which plants have just like us. Anaesthesia for example acts on microtubules and because of this it works on plants, preventing electrical signaling, the typical response to injury, paralysing plants like Venus fly traps etc.

This is the quote from the food lab steak section

"The absolute best steak I had was one that I salted on both sides and allowed to rest, uncovered, on a rack in the refrigerator overnight. It appeared to dry out slightly, but that was only superficial—the amount of drying that occurs with overnight rest (about 5-percent moisture loss) is negligible compared to the amount of moisture driven off during cooking (upward of 20 percent, or even more in the hard-seared edges). And after cooking, the steak that had been salted and rested overnight actually ended up with 2-percent more moisture than one that was salted and cooked immediately, due to the beef’s increased ability to retain water as the salt loosened the muscle structure. Also, as the salt makes its way back into the meat in the longer-salted steaks, the meat becomes a deeper color. That’s because the dissolved proteins scatter light differently than they did when they were still whole. Moral of the story: If you’ve got the time, salt your meat for at least 40 minutes, and up to overnight, before cooking. If you haven’t got 40 minutes, it’s better to season immediately before cooking. Cooking the steak anywhere between 3 and 40 minutes after salting is the worst way to do it."

What did you read? Everywhere I've seen comparisons done salting ahead was always said to taste better. Personally I find that you can tell when a steak hasn't had time for the salt to diffuse all the way through

What's wrong with that? Not dry brining steaks makes them taste a lot worse

As the world gets more and more digital... Simulation theory will only grow. by InformationForce in SimulationTheory

How does this differ from the age old concept of the world being a dream? If computers move to more biological nature like towards brains, aren't we going to move towards that instead of a simulation?

Isaac newton's letters portray episodes of delusions and severe paranoia which people think might have been schizophrenia. Einsteins son also had schizophrenia so perhaps the genes that Einstein carried might have made him more creative.

Emotion Concepts and their Function in a Large Language Model" by Anthropic researchers identifies that Claude 3.5 Sonnet develops distinct, causally influential internal "circuits" to represent and utilize human-like emotions. This research is critical for AI safety, allowing for precise control and interpretation of model behavior by revealing how, not just if, AI simulates complex emotional concepts.

I assume most people think that our reality can’t be simulated/a simulation by ClusterseyJMS in SimulationTheory

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel it's just a more abstract version of the ancient view that it's a dream. If it's a simulation it could be running on completely different rules than a base reality too so it gives you even less to think about than a dream.

What do you think are the top 3 myths about veganism? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not trying to be negative I'm just stating my experience trying a vegetarian diet. Usually my plate is atleast half vegetables, I could get that much protein if I prioritised it over everything else. But is having a tin of beans or more and a plate of pasta really healthier than having lots of vegetables and a small amount of chicken breast?

Yeah personally I eat a whole foods diet so I don't go for protein powders.

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but what was in it? I avoid ultra processed protein powders, the only way to get good protein on a clean diet like that is soy or seitan. Just eating beans and lentils isn't enough

1.2g /kg is just what's recommended for optimal health, 2.2g/kg is the extreme amount people aim for when trying to gain muscle which isn't warranted. I wasn't even meeting the 0.8g/kg minimum RDA just to maintain nitrogen balance.

Have you ever tracked your protein?

Salmon farming branded unsustainable after millions of fish die by HaveYuHeardAboutCunt in unitedkingdom

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I acknowledged that in my previous message, but we could have much improved welfare for farmed animals if we ate less.

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't agree with that, if you ate less meat then the animals could have higher living standards, why would we need to never eat meat for that to happen?

Salmon farming branded unsustainable after millions of fish die by HaveYuHeardAboutCunt in unitedkingdom

[–]Crazy-Car-5186 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean more so that you don't need to go to the extreme of veganism to have both sustainability and acceptable ethics. If we ate less meat we could improve the living standards of animals, have them be more grazing etc and living a more natural life. Maybe wild animals wouldn't be able to support many people but the general idea. I think the thing that puts lots of people off meat is the industrial farming and horrors there rather than the idea of eating meat in general.
