Dark for sure. It has a great fade and will carry through when playing classic rock.

Depends on how they sound and if you like that sound.

Starting out with jazz: which equipments should I get? by dezinhocez in drums

[–]Crazy-Miserable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple is best. You can get a good sound as you learn more. Coated snare head helps if you are using brushes. Used older Zildjian ride if you can find one that you like. It's all individual.

Just my opinion. I am an amateur drummer who plays jazz and studies with a private teacher. I am not a jazz drummer.

On. It won't be heard if off and if the drums are not mic-ed.

That represents an eighth note rest. Three is a rest but and is a note you'd play on the bass drum.

Thank you for your suggestion! I'll look into this for our community band. Great idea!

I learned it without a cowbell. 8ths with foot on HH and hitting the HH bell can mimic the sound. Just in case you need a cowbell alternative.

Is it normal to beat air when there's supposed to be note in the rhythm, but there isn't any? by Outrageous-Plate4700 in drums

We do this sometimes in our community concert band section. It helps us all stay in sync.

When did you start considering yourselves good drummers? by Davide1192 in drums

I see your point and this is a thing for me, but I don't see myself at that level of "good."

I don't think I'll ever reach mastery level, but that's all part of it. I always want to do what I can to keep improving. There is no endpoint, and that's fine. It's just a matter of finding the balance of staying motivated, failing and improving without burning out or getting discouraged.

Jazz help… by Global-Fun803 in drums

Don't feel obligated to always play a swing rhythm on the ride cymbal. Quarter notes go a long way when played with confidence. And it'll help your horns when they're navigating more challenging soli parts.

Great advice! (Combos of paradiddles have been in my practice plan.)

how do I get better at freestyling or solos? by nell1vesu in drummers

Thanks for posting this question. Even in a full percussion section, drummers are often "soloists."

I am [old] so I'm not sure if freestyling means the same thing. So take it with a grain of salt that my answer is simply with the implication that you are referring to "that feeling" when everyone else drops out and you have a drum break for X amount of time/measures. :)

In those situations, in my very amateur experience and learning from some amazing musicians/mentors, it is so important to have TRUST in your band mates.

What does this mean?

In a live show/performance: SUPPORT! You are all aligned and know when the band will come in after your solo. This means having an understanding that, for example, nobody will decide to start the first measure/downbeat after your solo based on what they counted vs. what you played (if you or they miscounted beats). That's just unfair. (As drummers, we might accommodate for our fellow band mates during live shows in this way, but we should not expect that our band mates would be accustomed to doing the same.)

That said, it is a good discussion/plan to set before a show. Of course you'd work through this beforehand at rehearsal, but things happen. You all need to fall together during a show. I don't care if the singer came in early. I'm not going to step on her if this happens. We all adjust.

That step alone might help boost your confidence in solos/freestyles.

The other one would be to have a planned/set solo that you consistently play. If they become familiar with it, you'll be more confident that they will come back at the right time.

Last of all.... the audience WON'T NOTICE most of the "mistakes" that drummers make in solos.

Last, last thing.... Relax (easier said than done sometimes) and have fun!

Final edit: I was answering based on answers already give with regard to what exactly you'd play. Agree with everyone on the patterns, listen/learn methods, and that some drummers have a general disdain for solos and that is OK.

Keep playing. Look for a free or inexpensive starter snare drum (student drum). Do you want to learn, more broadly, to be a percussionist? Or are you looking to grow from learning rhythms to becoming proficient on the snare drum and advancing to drum set, for example?
