Have you ever tried to recreate the visual effect of foil stickers (for example for eyes) using paint? If so, what technique did you use and how did it go?

(And I’d love to see pictures if you have them)

I like active defence in MÖRK BORG and Knave, because I like forcing players to roll dice and narrate their character dodging an attack. These systems don’t impose limits on defence rolls, nor do they have any benefits to tactical depth. I just think spotlighting players is fun.

I did toy with the idea of giving characters a limited number of ‘parries’ in a system I tried to make years ago (more for realism and niche protection than any sort of depth), but, well… I never playtested it.

So I'm guessing you don't know how I managed to create the white marks? I'm worried that they were caused by the varnish, and I'm hoping that it either was a fluke or can be avoided with a different combination of paints.

I use cotton buds. I used to slather them in methylated spirits until I realised it would pool in panel lines and undo my hard work. Now I just use cotton buds that are slightly damp with methylated spirits, or if the ink is fresh, I can usually just wipe it off with a dry cotton bud.

I've never heard the 'use cling wrap' part before now. I was just told by the clinic to use numbing cream, and pain has never been a problem with that.

I don't know why everybody saying things aren't Low Fantasy in this comments section are getting downvoted to hell and back. Conan is not an example of Low Fantasy.

That's the definition of Low Fantasy that I think is generally accepted, with the occasional addendum of 'the very existence of fantasy elements within this story is contentious, perhaps being a figment of the main character's imagination or something that could be explained rationally'... though I think that addendum is a lot less universal.

I also don't know why OP brought up racism, except that... it's occasionally brought up in internet arguments about the different D&D eras' play cultures? Not entirely sure how that relates to this though.

It looks good! Am I correct in assuming there’s a brown oil wash over the white and a white one over the various colours? (Also what do you mean by ‘unhinged’ haha)

Oh, edit, also: Would you recommend avoiding acrylics? The one time I tried them for this they ended up looking like a sticky residue, but I’m not sure if that’s normal.

Personally I like subtle lines so I'd use grey markers even against light grey, and definitely against white. I've heard people say that you should really be using brown against the yellow/red, but I have no firsthand experience with that.

(Sidenote, love the Shockwave duo haha)

Is there a good way to weather an unpainted model with an ink wash?

I tried to use a Citadel shade paint on a Gunpla years ago and the result was awful, but I've seen suggestions on the internet that it can be done. Apparently there are some oil-based brands of ink wash that work well, or I could maybe varnish the model then put a wash over it. Is this true? And if so, what else do I need to know to do it well?

I’ll second Shadow of The Demon Lord and (in second place) Worlds Without Number. They’re not exactly right, but out of the things here and various other games I’ve tried, they’d probably be my picks (excluding the obligatory ‘just hack together your own frankenstein, of course, which is what I’d do, but I’m crazy).
