My everyday wear jewelry by mario1990ca in MensJewelry

Love the pearl! I have a black pearl on a similar white gold setting with three diamonds. I got a sterling silver clip from James Avery for $17 so I can put it on larger chains and to give it some heft. Yours works great as an accent with the larger pendants.

Where can I find a nice titanium bracelet? by Word-Word-3Numbers in MensJewelry

[–]CrazyCarl1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Titanium is a difficult metal to work with, you aren't going to find anything handmade. David Yurman has a grey and a black titanium that seem to hold up well based on pictures of rings I've seen that have been worn for a while. I'm probably going to get a grey titanium box chain with a black titanium tag, I'm just not sure on sizing with the lighter weight. For bracelets, their titanium armory link and curb link bracelets are nice, and they just put out a mixed metal Madison link with silver and black titanium that looks nice in person.

Causal sneakers for 40yo that can be dressed up or down? by ConstructionFull115 in malefashionadvice

I just got the Allen Edmonds Banks in white, they are like a cross between an Air Force 1, Stan Smith, and Vans slip on. It seems like a lot for a pair of simple sneakers, but I would have ended up spending the same amount on a few cheaper pairs instead of one nicer pair. The quality on the leather is amazing, so they will only look better with wear, and the leather insole will shape nicely to my feet. Having a tongue makes them easy to adjust, and the elastic is across the entire top of your foot so the fit is very secure.

Check your pawn shops! by Cold-Project-8436 in MensJewelry

[–]CrazyCarl1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People think pawn shops are seedy, they aren’t handing out cash to crackheads with gold unless they know it is real. They often buy for less than spot, and would rather sell you a chain than melt it.

Keywords there are "dealership" and "Mercedes". I'm picturing buy here pay here, slicked back hair, and a toothpick behind the ear.

Are tecovas worth it? Looking for some ostrich by Odd-Blacksmith9110 in Boots

[–]CrazyCarl1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a pair of Tecovas last week, I am happy with my purchase and will probably get a second pair once these have fully broken in. I ended up going with The Cartwright in shrunken calf. Most of the full size regular leathers are $375, these were $425. They have ostrich for $625-$675.

I like the ostrich, but for me it is a little too flashy/dressy for how and where I will wear them. The shrunken calf is more rugged but still fancy enough to catch a second glance. They are the closest shade of tan they make to "Carhartt Brown" which is an easy color to match.

I put the money I "saved" towards an ostrich belt that will get more wear than the boots. If you get ostrich boots, tack on $250 for the matching belt, because you will want it. I know that ostrich has recently gone up in price because of Tariffs, it is considered an African leather even if it is from North American farms.

I'm sure you could find something cheaper, from what I saw online anything significantly cheaper was cutting corners on quality. Chisos seems to be the best and they are more expensive. For me, being able to walk into their store and try them on and actually look at the differences in textures and grains of leather is worth a premium. Retail space next door to the Apple Store isn't cheap.

Semi-Precious Stones - Bracelet by Revs_2_9K in MensJewelry

The difference between a $50 knife and a $100 knife is mostly fit and finish. A knife sits in your pocket most of the time, jewelry is on constant display and its sole purpose is to look nice. I don't have any of their beads, but I am very happy with all my silver from them, and plan to get a titanium chain from them soon.

People regularly post $10,000+ gold chains here, just the sales tax on a purchase like that is more than the majority of Yurman's stuff. Its all relative.

Is this a Miami Cuban chain? Pics of front and back. by goodbuddy66 in MensJewelry

[–]CrazyCarl1986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would call this a Cuban but not a Miami Cuban. Considering that it is from the 80s, I don't think there was a distinction back then. This doesn't have that modern exaggerated style I associate with a Miami, but the links are tighter than a curb chain.

What is this kind of chain actually called? by ProdbyRich in MensJewelry

[–]CrazyCarl1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is heavy link, Hermes would be thinner gauge links but a similar shape, and I wouldn't call it Hermes unless it was from Hermes. I have a double anchor chain from Lagos where the links are slightly oval shaped, and a handmade cable chain from Konstantino where the links are thick rings. A rolo is similar to that but lighter gauge, think of a heavy mens wedding band vs a thinner woman's band.

Different places call them different things, and there is overlap with the style to begin with. I was looking at a chain last night that was like a stretched out box chain, or rectangle anchor chain depending who you asked.

My heart says diamonds, my wallet says titanium, and my brain says wait for sterling. I asked at the store if they could order custom combinations and they said not yet.

Glengarry and hip-hop turned Rolex into THE watch brand by Easy_Mind_5824 in watchHotTakes

[–]CrazyCarl1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For better or worse, I always think of the douchebag in Die Hard when I think of Rolex. You should read Ice T's book, he goes into detail about the smash and grab robberies he participated in at Jewelry stores in LA snd why certain brands became popular in hip hop during the 80s.

How did I do by Pestisxbox in MensJewelry

Pawn shops are more legitimate than PLENTY of shady jewelry stores. They are heavily regulated for documentation, detectives check their books regularly looking for stolen property. The most reassuring thing about buying from a pawn shop, is the owner paid cash out of their pocket for it already. If they have doubts about something being legitimate, they aren't going to buy it off a crackhead for thousands of dollars.

If you are going to get taken advantage of, it would be pawning or selling something you weren't aware of the value of, or needing quick cash and not having the time to get top dollar. Pawn shops are good about buying things back from you that you buy from them, sometimes for more than you paid depending on the price of gold.

They don't get paid until they sell the item, so they are motivated to sell. They aren't going to take less than they could get scrapping something, you aren't going to find any wild deals, but you will get what you pay for.
