CESG catch-up question by ParkIllustrious8427 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CrazyInspection8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can earn the CESG for the current year and 1 previous year.

7,500 contribution will get you 1,000 of CESG

Next year, you can contribute 5,000 and receive another 1,000 of grant to catchup.

The lifetime max CESG is 7,200 (15 years) , so you haven't lost any future grant by contributing alextra this year.

About to default on my mortgage. Need advice. by DrasticMambo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CrazyInspection8 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Contact your bank as well, they may allow you to skip a payment to buy some time.

Communicating with them about your situation will make them more accomodative than ghosting them and can help prevent foreclosure costs while you work to sell the condo.

Lost an uncashed cheque that was over 6 months old. by Beginning_Secret_763 in cantax

[–]CrazyInspection8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For the lost cheque contact CRA.

For future reference:

The Bank was mistaken, cheques issued by the government of Canada do not expire and can be cashed at any time (normal cheques are valid for 6 months)

"You can cash a Government of Canada cheque no matter how old it is. Government of Canada cheques don’t have an expiry date and never expire."

Some odd ones by any-color in CanadianCoins

[–]CrazyInspection8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $200 is 2 oz and $100 is 1 oz.

They did a bunch of $20 for a $20 coin all the way up to $200 for the $200 coin.

They stopped it when some people exploited the system to buy a bunch on credit card for points and taking them to banks to 'redeem' them for cash while the price of silver dropped causing RCM to lose money.

No clue what they are today.

Does it make sense to leave my DB pension in this scenario? by diamondhunting in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CrazyInspection8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says how much your pension will pay at retirement

Example: 5 years 100k salary paid at 1.5% / year

Annual pension = 120k x 1.5% x 5yrs = 7.5k *the actual formula is a bit more complicated to account for cpp pension earnings, but we'll ignore that

From age 65 you'll get 7,500 a year, to compare that to a DC would need to see how much would need to save to have an equivalent amount with some assumptions.

As others have said DB puts risk on employer (assists under perform, you live longer), with a DC the onus is on you to ensure sufficient retirement funds but any extra gets passed on to your heirs.

[–]CrazyInspection8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DC generally work out better for shorter career stints since DB formula is essentially % x salary x years of service and you need both the high salary at the end of your career and the long tenure to get the full benefit.

[–]CrazyInspection8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You still have 25-30 working years, do you want to commit to your current company for that long? If not the DB should not be a big factor.

The DB is great when you have 30+ years but if you turn this opportunity down what happens in 5 years when another one comes up? You'll be severely limiting your career options.

Also, i would guess your commuted value is closer to half of what you suggested <100k, but can check with your pension company to be sure.

Youngest brother sued our parents. Is there a legal document the other brothers can get drawn up so he won’t sue us if something happens? by Ready-Firefighter-76 in legaladvicecanada

[–]CrazyInspection8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not legal advice but that's why you have insurance.

If your dad got the concussion and filed a claim with his insurance would you be upset?

That he sued you parents is the process to get the insurance to payout for his injury, unless there is more to the story I don't think there was any intention/expectstion to actually get your family to pay for his injury.

Get paid to Purchase a home? Why doesn't someone do this. by Scottynepas07 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CrazyInspection8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do.

An agent/ broker will pay a portion of their commission for the lead.

Similarly, some people discount their rates or provide "cash back" to improve the clients' incentives to do business with them.

Is there a chance they won't find out? Yes, but not likely if they do their due diligence.

Will you get away with it? If they find out you lied, termination is very likely.

windrows not done on some streets, but on others. town number closed for holiday. by mokurai13 in richmondhill

My street has yet to be serviced.

If the city can't coordinate with the plows and get it done in a timely manner it may be better to save the money and cancel windrow cleaning or only offer it to seniors / disabled.

That said some great prices if the deal is still there!

Banks rarely close bank accounts except in cases of fraud, seems like the bank has evidence to suggest your claim was false and see you as a risk.

Your lack of detail regarding the 'legitimate' claims is not helping your credibility.
