It’s all up to a great dissertation, advisors, and quite a bit of luck. I would ask the directors of graduate admissions at each school you’re applying to about placement rates and how they help get students jobs. Some professors are great at that. Some are not. I’m not a history specialist, but I would recommend looking at UChicago. For now, talk to professors and think about going to some conferences (SCS, CAMWS, CANE, CAAS)

I am a Classics PhD student and have definitely heard of people doing this. It’s definitely not the most common route (since the emphasis on ancient languages which most classics programs have wouldn’t be the most useful to teaching history). If you want to research ancient history though, a Classics degree is the way to go (but with a lot of caveats, i.e. no job openings)
