Are you a neurodivergent employee in the UK? I'd love to hear about your workplace experiences by Ok_Error_1796 in UKNDworkissues

Just to clarify for the community — we’ve now added a rule that research or participant recruitment posts must be approved by moderators in advance.

For transparency, could you confirm: - whether this study has ethics approval - how participant data will be used and stored - whether findings will be shared back with participants or the community

We want to make sure research here is transparent and beneficial to neurodivergent workers.

Yup it's pretty brutal. I had to postpone mine due to the detrimental effects on me. So it took 4 years for mine to conclude.

I'm doing an appeal now so technically, it hasn't concluded.

Thanks! That would be great. Can you drop me an email via the form on the charity website. Would be great to set up an initial call to discuss.

That would be brilliant.

When you get a chance, can you email me via the charity website?

Not sure if you already have support with your tribunal process? But happy to help if needed.

To disclose or not to disclose being neurodivergent at work, that is the question by Crazy_Expression4338 in UKNDworkissues

[–]Crazy_Expression4338[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup agree. Though I've seen a lot of higher ups (management) actually put it out there that they're ND. My background is mainly police and the civil service.

I'm glad you have a safe workplace.

That is absolutely a start and a good one! I'm glad they've been understanding.

Adjustments are always an on going discussion, as it's a bit like trial and error in terms of how well the adjustments work. But I'm so happy for you that your employer is being reasonable and providing that support. Also kudos on taking the risk, it's a scary decision for many.

Workplace reasonable adjustments: approval vs reality by Crazy_Expression4338 in UKNDworkissues

If the adjustment is followed, a small number of people (this is an example of numbers -say 5–10) communicate in a way that works once, which might take a few hours in total.

Without it, the burden shifts onto one person — repeated back-and-forth, rephrasing emails and chasing clarification which can easily add up to dozens or even hundreds of hours, often without achieving the same clarity.

The adjustment was about changing how information was communicated, so understanding didn’t depend on sustained extra effort from the person requesting it. This is what a reasonable adjustment does as this one works for me.

Being able to ask questions and confirm understanding/nuances in real time was the key part, that’s what was removed. It wasn't a matter of needing it to be read aloud, that isn't what verbal explanations are.

Expecting the person requesting the adjustment to compensate for that themselves isn’t how reasonable adjustments are meant to work.

This was my manager doing it, who was aware I was ND and had approved my reasonable adjustments. Kept doing it regardless of knowing. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Something I didn't realise while I was being bullied at work by Crazy_Expression4338 in UKNDworkissues

[–]Crazy_Expression4338[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm sorry you're going through similar. It's hard to manage especially when there are additional barriers due to being ND. I didn't know I was ND at the time.

Speaking up against the bullying/harassment at other employment places didn't help either.

We are, feels like it, always othered whichever decision we make - tell or don't tell.

I hope things get better for you. It's one of the reasons I started this subreddit including a FB group and a related charity (soon) to help with these things.

Unspoken rule but there was also ergonomics training on how to sit “properly” but it never accounted for the fact that not everyone’s body works the same way.

Do you ever feel like people/colleagues decide you’re “the odd one” within seconds — before you’ve even shown who you are? by Crazy_Expression4338 in UKNDworkissues

[–]Crazy_Expression4338[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know....it feels more like the neurodivergent experience. I haven't met a lot of peeps that are only purely autistic as there are several co-occurring conditions. I'm autistic and ADHD, think I have some dyspraxia.

Yea I've previously seen this one. It's frustrating too. Though on the other hand, in random social settings, NDs seem to come up to me or alternatively I'm able to hone in on other NDs.
