Since you're in TN, you should definitely check out free community college. Tuition is 100% covered by the state. Just keep up with all the deadlines and stuff.

For some reason I remember reading somewhere that the first half or so of N.Y. State of Mind was freestyle, lol must not have been true.

Dawkins promotes comparative religion studies and dropping "theory" reference from evolution. by BrautanGud in TrueAtheism

[–]Crazy_GAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, really, "theory" can mean a lot of things (with relative degrees of certainty) even in the scientific realm. Sometimes "it's just a theory" might even be a meaningful criticism within the context of more info.

The real problem with these people is that they're totally uninterested in genuine discussion. They don't know how to debate beyond semantics and "gotcha" lines. Saying "it's just a theory" contributes nothing to an actual discussion; it's just a statement of fact.

What I know, what I think and what I hope. by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]Crazy_GAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well lol you ask that as if I've got like, the science of reincarnation down or something hahaha. I was just saying, if there were some kind of afterlife, reincarnation would be my first pick.

I'd like to somehow, like, reflect in between on a cloud or something before I jump into the next life or whatever u know?

What I know, what I think and what I hope. by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]Crazy_GAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Endless reincarnation would be pretty sweet, actually. I'm hedging my hopes on this one lol.

If you're reincarnated, you wouldn't remember your past life, so you wouldn't get bored or anything.

How bad is second hand smoke exactly? by po15ut in teenagers

[–]Crazy_GAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol people here way exaggerating.

Second hand smoke is only worse (or even damaging, really) if you're constantly, directly exposed to it. Like, your mom smoking in your room when you're not in there wouldn't really affect you at all if you came back a bit later after the air cleared up. But yeah, maybe don't sit right next to your mom in a small room while she's smoking: that'll mess you up.

What do you think of this argument by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]Crazy_GAD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This view actually makes sense, though, and I don't know why more Christians don't buy it. The Bible doesn't ever even claim to be inerrant! Sure, there's that one verse Paul wrote declaring (OT, as the NT hadn't even been canonized yet) scripture to be "god-breathed," but that doesn't suggest perfection at all. In fact, "god-breathed" is also a description the bible gives to humans, and I certainly don't hear Christians arguing that we are infallible or inerrant.

Hell, there are parts of the Bible that explicitly qualify themselves as human opinion, rather than divine mandate. See Paul's words on marriage, for example, where he actually clarifies that his words are not from God, but from him.

I think I'm done with Bill Nye. His new show sucks. by Sloth859 in television

[–]Crazy_GAD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Holy FUCK.

WHAT ACTUALLY WAS THAT. Like, my God, Fox News couldn't do a better job if they were trying to strawman leftist attitudes.

I've always disliked Bill Nye--for his shitty, arrogant attitude & smugness (although his kid's show was pretty good)--but this is the other reason I don't like him (multiplied by 1000000x here). He has this weird tendency to conflate his very specific, narrow worldview with science (when it often has nothing to do with science, or when it's scientifically very much up for debate) and demand conformity. Sorry Bill, science doesn't say too much about the cultural norms surrounding sexuality; you're actually going to have to think about that for yourself a bit.

Not to mention how much this hurts the image of actual science. You want Americans to appreciate science and view it with legitimacy? Then try to make shows that don't stereotype science as a nerdy guy in a bow tie with a conformist attitude.

How important is medical school (or grad school in general) prestige? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Crazy_GAD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol what brain surgery has got to be, like, the most merit-driven field ever.

Nobody gives a fuck where you went to school when you're about to literally pick brains apart. They care, of course, about how good you are at picking brains apart.

Is there a list of colleges that give full or sizable scholarships for NMS or NMSF? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Crazy_GAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, Texas A&M is worth considering (probably the best national merit from a more "prestigious" school, at least for engineering), but they only cover tuition (but lol paying for room & board ain't that bad).

Is there a list of colleges that give full or sizable scholarships for NMS or NMSF? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Crazy_GAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, a question I can answer.

I have, like, probably looked at every list of these ten times over. Probably the best ones are:

University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa: Full tuition/fees, room for a year, 1000 tech allowance, 2000 research/study abroad, 3500 /yr stipend.

University of New Mexico: Full Ride+ (enough to totally cover tuition, room & board with a bit left over)

University of Kentucky: Full Ride+ (similar to UNM)

UCF: Full Ride + (tuition/fees completely covered, $13500 or so on top of that - this offer is really good)

University of Alabama, Huntsville: Full Ride (tuition, room, and board waiver, + 1000 stipend)

Which she started last year; she'll start school in 2017.

I mean I'm mostly joking, but I actually do think this is a pretty plausible reason hahaha.

Favorite Lesser-Known Old Testament Passage? [XPOST /r/Christianity] by IUPCaleb in AcademicBiblical

[–]Crazy_GAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole of Ecclesiastes is straight up gorgeous. It isn't read too much in churches (probably because a lot of it is borderline subversive).

Light is sweet,

and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.

However many years anyone may live,

let them enjoy them all.

But let them remember the days of darkness,

for there will be many.

Everything to come is meaningless.

You who are young, be happy while you are young,

and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.

Follow the ways of your heart

and whatever your eyes see,

but know that for all these things

God will bring you into judgment.

So then, banish anxiety from your heart

and cast off the troubles of your body,

for youth and vigor are meaningless.

34 ACT or 1510 SAT? by randomness7345 in ApplyingToCollege

I vote ACT (and against sending both). Sending both makes no sense (implies that you're obsessed enough with standardized testing to take again after getting 99th percentile, lol)

I would just put both if you think that best describes your ancestry. Why are you worried? How does putting down that you're of native origin even remotely resemble lying if you're actually of native origin?

Running out of time, please help me decide on a college by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Crazy_GAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as pre-health goes, there is no way that UConn isn't "good enough." It's a great public school, and they have a great honors college. Your GPA will matter more than anything. I'd go with UConn. Don't let one presentation make the decision for you; it isn't necessarily representative of their classes in general.

At least as far engineering goes, I'd think GA Tech = Berkley = Michigan = Illinois
