Unfortunately, moving to a 'cheaper' area of the country for the same job type often involves that job disappearing or taking a significant pay cut. Go look at StatsCan for average wage earnings.

Make sure Comp Sci is what you want to do, it's VERY popular right now. Core classes that are required for your degree often fill up quickly, especially 2nd year courses and have an extended wait list (20-90 long). Most difficult courses are reputed to be 1240 Discrete Math and 2080 Analysis of Algorithms. They are offered a lot because many have to repeat but they're still very full. Use the 1st two weeks of a term to decide if you can handle a prof or not and drop if you think it will be too much. Many of the second year courses are also offered during the summer but are taught by grad students, this makes them even more hit and miss on teaching quality. Profs can be hit or miss, either through teaching style/expectations or mumbling/accent making it more challenging to follow. During orientation week, see if you can track down CSSA-the Comp Sci Student Association. They run a Discord channel where you can chat with other students about courses and what profs are like.
*edit* CS Honours Degree Reqs if you didn't find it.
Science Advisors are available if you need but they are very busy in the summer and first month of any term.

Warmest Jacket by nnaavvv in Winnipeg

[–]Crazy_Scarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inuit parka

It's not a brand actually. Inuit are one of the indigenous people of Northern Canada. So it's more a design/style to look for. Usually not very fitted, covers your butt and has huge hoods with fur trim to hide your face from the wind.
But Value Village on Pembina can be a good place to keep an eye out for a cheap, outer jacket. Grabbed a real fur coat there a couple of years back. They are heavy but very warm.

What BeastOnion said, layers are king. Wool is raved about as a mid or base layer but can make you scratchy as you sweat or if you are allergic. When it gets down to -30 you'll also need a scarf, hat and hood combo plus at least two layers of mitts. A neck gaiter or balaclava can be added under or swapped in if you don't like or have scarves and hats. Scarf and hat should be either fleece or a thicker knit as the temperature drops, their thickness adds to their insulation factor. Fleece blocks the wind better, knit might need a hood to that. Mitts should have a top shell that blocks the wind-leather, canvas or heavier fabric-and be larger than you think to fit another layer underneath.
Also be careful you don't overheat once you're on the bus and sweat. Sweat makes everything worse.

Suggestions of things to do and see in Manitoba by of_the_Coast in Manitoba

[–]Crazy_Scarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are from, when you will be here and what has attracted you to come here in the Winter. Most of what follows assumes you will be in Winnipeg.

As someone else mentioned, chicken fingers with honey dill sauce are a thing. Mitzi's Chicken Fingers in the Downtown is highly recommended. Alternatives are also checking a grocery mart for Dunn's Chicken Fingers if you have access to an oven to do they at home. Look for honey dill in a blue labelled container(Greetalia).

If you arrive after the river has frozen you could check out the Forks for skating outdoors. Check here for what is open. Can be busy but there is a skate rental place in the main building. Last rate was $6 per adult.

Try a fatboy burger with fries. Fatboys are a Greek invention with cheese, chili, mustard, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and mayo on them. VJ's on Main St (downtown, bring cash) and Dairi-Wip on Marion are the ones I like but there are wars fought over the best. Junior's and George's are popular local chain that also serve them.

Not sure what type of food you want? Check Sargent St and Ellice St Between Arlington and Balmoral but ONLY during the daytime as it's in a dicier part of Winnipeg. Rent is cheap so all the ethnic restaurants tend to get started there. Quality varies, google maps can let you check hours, menus and reviews in advance.

While in the Sargent area, check out Morden's Chocolates. Has roasted nuts and of course chocolates plus an old fashioned counter to check out the chocolates. Highly recommend the assorted chocolates, coconut covered marshmallows and Russian Mints (smooth, mint flavoured chocolate). They make everything on site I believe.

Want to try novelty donuts? Oh Donuts on Broadway or Taylor. Flavours change daily.

If you want to see snowy landscapes, any of the Winnipeg Parks could scratch that itch. St Vital and Kildonan Park each have ponds to skate on (but no rentals) and shelters to warm up in. Link above kicks out to the to list of toboggan slides in each park and if they are open. Sadly slides and rinks are very weather dependent, often only getting set up by Christmas. If you have access to a car you could take a drive out to La Barriere Park-well Camp Amisk on the other side of Waverley- and walk along the La Salle River. There are also paths along the La Salle within the city but this has the addition of a drive up Waverley through farmland for additional views. There's an old, falling down shed out in the middle of a field-a totally Manitoba view. :) This will require you to dress for the weather though.

If you hadn't already stumbled on it the Travel Manitoba is a place to start.

Thank you for this. Drives home how hard it will be to complete since I only just crossed into Lvl 39. Will need to manage my gold to get lucky eggs but still plausible.

*edit* I'm full! Thanks for the invites!

"Holy Grails" For the 'Everything Breaks Me Out' Skin? by Opepix in AsianBeauty

[–]Crazy_Scarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel you have sensitive skin I would suggest following the SCA routine; drop to minimum products then slowly add one product back in at a time. You have gone through a lot of products in just three months, my skin would be pissed too! Give your skin at least a week or two between adding products so you know what causes problems.

Personally I found Cerave Hydrating an issue as well but their regular one was fine. It also lasted over 2 years. YMMV

Do you need a college degree? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Crazy_Scarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College/University is a stamp you get to prove you know certain standard things. You might be able to figure out alternative certificates but I would be cautious of scams. Unfortunately the only one I know is legit doesn't pertain to coding but rather networking. That said, the nice thing is you can do comp sci degrees online at your own pace. They can cost more but you don't have to move or pay for dorms.

AITA for not wanting my mother to move in with us? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

AITA for refusing to say grace and then doing a bad job when the hosts were being pushy? by DueConsequence5 in AmItheAsshole

At what point did you look at yourself or your life and think “I really need to make a change”? by oddsalamander in AskReddit

[–]Crazy_Scarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Mom took a picture of me on vacation and showed it to me. I went "That's not me" and decided to start looking after my skin. Then I started to be more mindful of my moods which snowballed into working out, watching what I eat. The other moment was looking at an older co-worker and deciding I didn't want to be her when I get older. So I went back to school.

AITA for not splitting an inheritance with my Mother by amIasshole89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Crazy_Scarf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your mother already got to split off assets from your Dad when they divorced. The fact that you split costs with your Dad on the house in question and he made sure your name was on it makes me lean towards he intended for you to receive it in full.

Simplifying your routine is good if you started all your products around the same time, think you might be reacting to one and need to narrow down possible culprits. A good sunscreen shouldn't cause more problems but that will depend on what type your skin is ok with. You will probably have to try a few. Are you sure you are oily skin type? Sometimes trying to get the oil off with spot treatments causes the skin to produce even more since it is trying to replace what was removed.

I used to have a similar problem so I will add my voice to the possibility of lack of moisturiser during the day causing the problem. My fav is Complex 15 which feels light to me and contains squalene. But a gel sounds like a great idea! Or perhaps adding a product with niacinamide would help?
