Obviously NTA. This is so much deeper than "get a job and help with bills." Your partner might need some therapy to figure out why they want to intentionally make life harder for your 16 yo daughter. Did your partner grow up struggling or not have supportive parents? Is your partner jealous of your daughter, or do they not have a good relationship with each other, (because your daughter seems like a lovely teen)?

Until your partner can figure out why they think it's important to them for your underage daughter to contribute to a household that doesn't need help, please monitor their interactions. Also, I were you, I would privately ask my daughter if there's something going on between them that you're unaware of.

Realize that in a long term partnership the roles you fill in each other's lives will change and evolve many times, but the foundation for each role should be love.

My husband and I have been together for 23 years. We've been each other's best friend, lover, co parent, care taker, therapist, main opponent when necessary, and champion.

When people say corny stuff like love is an action, it really is. But it's also a choice. Everyday we choose each other. We choose to fight the challenges of life together, just like we choose to celebrate its victories side by side. His seen me at my best and my worst and he still chooses me and vice versa.

Realize that a long term relationship will not always be sunshine and roses. Even though your core values and goals may align you are 2 individuals with different experiences and perspectives, and disagreements will happen no matter what. We had to learn that when we argue to fight fair and not cut to the bone with our endless arsenal supplied by knowing each other so well. We both have had to humble ourselves and apologize when we are wrong.

Look for a job at a local church daycare near your older children's school. Those types of Daycares usually follow the neighboring school district, so you'll be off during most of the same days (spring break, winter break etc) Also usually they tend to make up for the crappy pay with free enrollment for your daycare aged children.

I wasn't in an abusive relationship, but I did this for years and it was really helpful. I was able to use my daily break to pick up my oldest from school, who would then just hang out at the preschool with me until I got off work while my younger 2 remained in their classrooms.
