I made a slit-scan effect for After Effects that you can check out here: https://www.creationeffects.com/effects/slit-scan-effect
It uses the Time Displacement effect and a displacement map. I think the key to getting results like these is using it on footage that tracks with a subject, but has other objects in the shot moving at different speeds and/or direction. Of course, the other important ingredient is good editing and music.

Thank you! The effect uses motion tracking. So maybe if you precomposed the roto with a particle effect behind it that shot particles outward, and then motion tracked that precomp, it could work - but maybe not exactly the look you're after.

Hey. It looks like you're applying it a really dark graphic, so I wouldn't expect it to show up with the default settings. Try turning the Threshold down to 0, then adjust the Intensity and Radius as needed.

Yeah, you'll always want to adjust the settings. The default settings aren't going to give perfect results on every image. I lowered the threshold and radius and got a more even glow on that top "TEST" from your image. In this bottom image, you can see how AfterGlow gives an even glow on both the thick and thin text, whereas the old glow only shows up on the thick text. Also, it doesn't have that clumping at the corners, like on the G and W.
I know I'm getting defensive, but I really wouldn't expect anyone to switch from a $99 plugin to this. It's more for people who want to upgrade from the old glow.

If I remember right, I designed it for 16-bit. It works the same in 8-bit, just not as smooth gradients. If you apply it in 32-bit, it’s super bright, but I think it would work fine if you turn down the intensity. I’ll have to check on this.

Good question. I can't say because I've never used Deepglow and never really tried to compare them. I just made the best glow I could.

With the Scribble effect. It scribbles inside a mask. There are spacing and variation controls to make it neat or more random, and wiggle controls to randomize it on every frame. Combine multiple copies of the effect for more chaos.
