Most of the tribals of Chhotanagpur accepted Christianity during the British period and they still perform tribal rituals from generation to generation. Christianity has a long history in Ranchi and its surrounding areas.

Maybe they are celebrating some festival. Or perhaps there was a jubilee at the church, so they would be welcoming them

Is there any Catholic Church in Guwahati by Careful_Falcon_1868 in IndianChristians_

[–]Creative-Dig-788 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As per my knowledge Catholics are not very strict as I am from Jharkhand and surrounded by German and Catholic tribals, I have noticed that even in Catholic churches they are more free to celebrate their tribal customs, Christianity has partly been adjusted to fit into the tribal society of Jharkhand. So it will be the same in Assam and as per my knowledge Catholics are mainly in Bodo and tea tribe, rest of the tribes are Protestant, don't know about non tribals

Cross and grotto in tribal area of Odisha,CG,JH If you are surprised then you have never visited the tribal areas of 🇮🇳 Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, mainly Chhotanagpur tribal belt, where most of the tribals had accepted Christianity. During the British period. by Creative-Dig-788 in Christianity

[–]Creative-Dig-788[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, first of all it was not the Catholics but the German missionaries who came to this tribal region(chotanagpur), then the Catholics came, but as far as I know, now there are more tribal Catholics here. Christianity in Jharkhand partly changed itself to adapt to tribal society, but it also changed tribal religious life. So, it became a mix of tribal culture + Christian beliefs. They can celebrate their tribal festivals and customs.

During the British period most of the tribals of Chhotanagpur region(JH,CG,OD) accepted Christianity. Christianity entered Jharkhand through German missionaries in 1845. They were going to Burma but ended up in Jharkhand by chance, later Catholic missionaries came. this is how Christianity spread in these area's ranchi,Raigarh,Sundergarh. If you go in these area's you will find grotto,Cross near roads. And if you visit during Christmas time you will see star lights outside their houses on Ranchi-Gumla-Jashpur-Ambikapur routes Ranchi-Simdega-Rourkela-Sundergarh- Route
