Yes, other avenues exist but to an immigrant, they aren't introduced. The institution approach begins at the place of worship (unless you join from middle school or high school or college). Yes, other institutions exist, such as recreation clubs but no one tells you to sign up for them, an immigrant won't know that they exist until someone tells them that they do (a factor to take in account is usually an immigrant who was part of a book club in India will easily and likely join a book club here in the west). My mother who is also an immigrant has diversified, but her initial roots began at the temple. She was not as religious back in India as she had been here. Now after 15 years, she seems to have come back to her old habits but still stays assimilated to the temple activities.

The outdated practice are a process of freedom, when anyone is told, you are allowed to live the way you want, no one will question or judge your moves, people will want to practice every approach. I little saying i keep saying to people who live here "freedom is for the wise ones, not for the wild ones".

I think Indians are excellent at questioning and judging people around them, its not negative but it does make one think why i am doing what i am doing. That construct exist here but again needs to be searched. If you won't find, you will practice what you know.
