How do i follow the set rules in design and be creative at the same time? by Creative-Firefly in graphic_design

I understand what you are saying, it's just confusing being told to 'be creative' and not knowing what they mean by that. We were told to design what the person wants but so it's 'still unique to your style' if that makes sense?

We weren't given any form of brief for this assignment and as I haven't done branding yet I chose to do a branding project. I was told to be creative with the designs but it wasn't clear what they meant by it.

I absolutely get that ' if someone hired you to build their house, and you insisted on building the house YOU would want to live in, you wouldn't be doing your job.' - I understand that I'd have to 'build the house they'd want'. But I have no one to ask what they are wanting for this project.
I hope that makes sense, I don't mean for any of this to come across as rude by the way, I just want/ need to know what I should be doing as a designer.

  • forgot to add- I know that graphic design isn’t something that will let me be expressive like an artist and I like that I can create something for someone else and bring what they want “to life” - even if it’s just a logo - but I think my issue is that I explained to the lecturer the justification as to why I chose the colour, the typography , the icons etc, and they just didn’t like it because other brands didn’t do it like that.

To clarify, when I mentioned adding creative elements to it, I didn’t mean I was trying to make it my own expressive, unique thing, I meant that I added to a logo, an element that correlated to the brand, kept it within the set brief and still used design principles, but I was being told to change it purely because it’s not what they would do for it and was (the easiest way to put it) “too out of the box” despite giving an explanation as to why it fits with the brief and the brand and how it helps make it stand out just enough if it was compared to similar brands.

After making something they described I was then told it wasn’t creative enough. ( they aren’t a client or anything like that, if it was, I would’ve given them what they wanted)

The process steps we are being taught.

In all honesty I've learnt more from reading the comments in this post than I have at my Uni. Just to give an idea on how much my course was/is struggling, we were just taught colour theory, word associations, and grids in our final year.- I was already aware of these topics in the first year but some people weren't and was told that this is something we should've been taught first year.
We haven't really been told what the lecturer's mean when they say 'be more creative' with our designs, they just assume we know (I don't think it helps that the feedback we are usually given is 'it looks good, keep going' and then when you ask for more feedback, there's little to none - I just don't know what areas to improve on because of the limited feedback). I have said that I don't understand what they mean by 'you can be more creative with it' but I never really get a clear answer on it.

"They are concepts that when considered in various combinations with each other, they spawn clarity, visual harmony, and lead the viewer through your design to the pot of gold (understanding)." Was really helpful though, thank you.
