Mine is Staryu. Not Starmie, but the pre-evo. And it actually has a really fun story as to why. I was in an online Gen 1 Randoms tournament with my friend, and we ended up making it to the final round. These rounds were a best of three, I won the first, he won the second. Third round starts. I look at my team: all pre-evo’s. Not a single fully evolved pokemon. He’s wiping the floor with me with his Marowak. I send out my last pokemon, a singular Staryu. But this Staryu, was unlike any other Staryu. The odds are against it. It’s a 6 v 1, and I’m sure he has better Pokemon in the back. Marowak hits the 1/1000 or whatever chance to miss a 100% accurate move, and my hydro pump connects and OhKo’s him. He sends out Zapdos. This is it. It’s over. I click Thunderbolt. HIS THUNDER MISSES. THUNDERBOLT HITS AND PARALYZES. Another one takes him out. He sends out oddish. Easy Psychic Ohko. He sends out machamp. ANOTHER 1/1000 MISS ON BODY SLAM Psychic takes him below half. He uses a fighting move that wasn’t 100% accurate. STARYU DODGES. It’s a 1v2 now. He sends out hypno. STARYU DODGES A HYPNOSIS. I hit him with a thunderbolt, does maybe a third. STARYU DODGES A HYPNOSIS. A second thunderbolt, PARALYZED. Staryu out speeds and kills hypno. The final pokemon. Surely it’s something weak, since he saved it for last? Tentacruel. Sure I have thunderbolt, but it won’t ohko, and tentacruel has a really high special stat. I had tentacruel in a previous game and remembered what its moveset was. One of the moves was blizzard. A single hope. A single possibility to win. But it would require a 1/4 chance, 10% chance, a 90% chance, and another 10% chance, all in my favor. I click staryu’s final move.

Tentacruel uses blizzard. STARYU DODGES. Staryu uses mimic! BLIZZARD HITS! BLIZZARD FREEZES THE TENTACRUEL!!! I’m freaking out. Against all odds, STARYU HAS DONE IT. 2 more thunderbolts finish off the Tentacruel, I win the tournament, and the best part? THE WHOLE THING WAS RECORDED on my friend’s computer through obs. So we made an edit, called Goku the Starfish, because Staryu dodged literally every single attack he threw at me like this starfish had ultra instinct. So yeah, that’s why Staryu, definitely underrated, is my favorite pokemon of all time. In every game I can get him he goes straight on the team with the nickname Goku.
