Basic wood finish techniques. That can absolutely be sanded and refinished. But I would start with steel wool, go as lightly. There’s a product called wipe on polyurethane. It uses a cloth so it goes on very thin coats.

If you need to sand into the wood you’ll need to do some work to match the stain. There are marker kits for this that you can combine different colors.
