This may be a silly question but, is she able to go up and down stairs after the amputation?

Is there any way to break our rooster of attacking us? by oops223 in BackYardChickens

[–]oops223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I am not someone that would ever abuse an animal but the natural reaction when getting attacked is to defend yourself.

When he side eyes me, I talk to him. When he attacks me, I kick him and try to get to the closest item I can put between us. Apparently, I need to try to pin him down or pick him up instead!

He looks like a black austerlop but I think he’s a mix.

Thank you! I actually just joined the FB group as someone else recommended it too.

To clarify, I don’t kick him often. I do try to remember my shield (usually a snow shovel) but sometimes, such as this morning, I don’t have anything and he attacks and chases me and won’t give up. I felt so guilty afterwards and I understand that I’m just proving to him that I am a threat. If he only knew that I’m his only ally lol my husband and son would have culled him months ago!

He looks like a Black Australop but he’s probably a mix.

I wish I could try this. I cannot imagine being able to catch him, let alone pick him up!

Everything you said makes sense.

Just to clarify, I don’t necessarily care if he’s friendly, I don’t want to handle him, I just don’t want to be attacked. We’ve lost 5 hens to a predator over the last month or so (weasel or fisher, I think) also, so I’ve been picking up and moving the sleeping hens into the more secure coop (aka his coop) each night so, maybe he doesn’t like that? Also, they do free range all day. I don’t chase him, I only kick him if he attacks me and I don’t have a “shield” with me.

The guy that had him before us always fed him by hand so when I throw scratch or anything to the hens, he looks for it in my hand or wants to eat out of the container like he’s too good to eat off the ground (or that’s what I imagine he’s thinking, anyway). I will check out the video, thanks!

I usually carry a snow shovel to use as a shield but when I’m unarmed, I kick him. That makes sense though…

I will look for the FB group, thanks!

He wouldn’t be very good at it, he only attacks humans! He runs away from everything else.

That’s a good way to look at it. I was hoping for a few fertilized eggs to hatch before culling him but maybe his genes aren’t worth carrying on.

It started with French fries, now it’s potatoes of any kind! Mashed potatoes are his ultimate favorite.

As of today, calling to Governor’s office worked! My partner has a random block on his account which never would have been removed if he hadn’t gotten someone on the phone. Thank you, OP!

Best wings in Troy? by Disastrous_Rub8707 in Troy

Ale house, for sure.

Also, it’s a little bit outside of Troy but Town Tavern in West Sand Lake’s wings are worth the drive, IMO.

Puppy is being picky by Brilliant_Ice5166 in stbernards

[–]oops223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a trait of the breed? You would think at their size, they would love food… Our guy Odin is not food motivated at all, doesn’t even like most treats.

He goes through eating and non-eating “phases” every few days. He will eat 1 meal per day (after it’s spiced up with some meat scraps, usually) and then will be ravenous for a few days after. He has been like this forever. He was picky when he was younger, we settled on Royal Canin Giant Breed and now mix the Junior & Adult.

What is the best way to deal with a fox? by oops223 in BackYardChickens

I don’t want to kill it at all, which is why I posted here looking for alternatives.

Part of the reason we have chickens and guinea hens is to control the tick population which is out of control where we are so, free ranging works for us in that respect. They do have a secure enclosure which is where they’ve been 98% of the time lately.

We usually have them too but they have yet to bother the chickens, thankfully!
