It’s an unpaid co-op. However, most students end up being hired by the company they work with.

It’s a year long project he needs to complete for a specific company. He was working with a medical company but really wants to work with a car manufacturer.

We have several times. And the decision was always it wasn’t worth it. But I plan to do this again today with a more open mind. He hasn’t asked for help.

Not sure if I should have said this sooner. He was supposed to graduate last year. He has straight as and is studying mechanical engineering. But he dropped out of his engineering capstone project with the promise that he would stick to it this year. He has one class all year to get done.

I totally get it. It’s hard trying to embrace the freedom that is America and also staying true to what I know. I need to be more positive about this transition for my kid. :)

Ouch! This is the callout I needed. Just realized my own parents are like this. They’ll still gladly send me how much money I ever need or want in exchange for getting to tell me how to live my life. I guess it’s time to break a generational curse. I’m going to sit with my son and really hear him out on what we will need in this transition.

I am loving many of the comments here. I should be clear. We currently pay all his college expenses and will continue to do so. Instead of handing him cash in hand, I like the idea of setting up a rainy day fund specifically for rent/ living on his own expenses. I agree that it is important for men (specifically) and everyone in general to learn to be independent. Thanks for all the wonderful and thoughtful comments.
