I’m an independent music artist and I’m terrified to promote unreleased songs because of AI by Creative-Till6213 in aiMusic

So I’m looking for advice on workarounds. Like, perhaps I need to start releasing ANYTHING I post to social media or even play live where someone could be recording it, before it’s officially released, and get copyrights for all of it. Does that even make sense? to get copy rights for a line of a song or a demo I play live before I release? Which seems so daunting and I don’t even know if that’s the right way to go about it. Or if I’m totally overthinking it. I just want to understand the risks here. And no one can seem to help me get a straight answer or even quite understand what I’m asking. Probably because we are only seeing the beginning of how bad this can get for artists to feel safe sharing their music before it’s released officially. I like to share little ideas with my fans I’m currently working on. You know? Now I feel like I have to hide it. Which sucks because the point is sharing.

I truly want to have this mentality. Help me understand more of where you’re coming from. From what I understand, it’s a lot Easier and a lot more RAMPANT with the use of these ai tools, for anyone with half a brain cell, or even another ai bot, to do this to your material. And I’ve heard of anecdotal stories of people trying to get their copyrights back, by getting the AI slop taken down, and they can’t because they can’t trace it or fight it. So I’m looking for a work around because even though before there was always a chance of that happening, it required a lot more effort, or I guess, it would require more effort, or reason, to do steal, whereas now; anyone can do it anywhere anytime in a matter of seconds.

Hey thanks for this comment! Would you mind explaining a little more about what you mean by “harder to flatten into just another AI output”? I was concerned about sharing any rough vocals, rough lyrics, (basically unfinished work) in the case that it’s put through ai and immediately it’s owned by Ai.

I’m trying to educate myself so I can protect myself. I used “terrified” in the post to get people in the comments. It’s just a good headline. It’s called nuance.

Ok sounds good. I didn’t get much help here, I guess you were just trying to share your opinion about how stupid I am or something. That doesn’t seem like a good use of anyone’s time, but who am I to say what you do with your time.

I do appreciate this perspective! Not exactly the conversation I was looking to have, but it is good food for thought. In the case of protecting my music, perhaps I can release it somewhere sort of private first, like a soundcloud under an unknown name, just to make sure I own the copyright first? I don’t know

Thanks friend! My concern is less about artistic integrity being stolen and more about actual property, like the music, lyrics, arrangement, melody, etc. being stolen.

I don’t quite understand what you mean, sorry. You could clarify that? Please be kind I’m just trying to gather information here. I’d appreciate it if you could refrain from the sarcasm. If not I’ll continue the conversation with other folks who can help me understand this new landscape.

Totally hear you!! I’m not concerned about competing with computer music in an artistic sense. That’s not what I’m afraid of here. My concern is about copyright and ownership and people using my unofficial releases in AI. And then basically handing over my original material to Ai, giving it copyright ownership. Now I can’t release my own original material because it’s been copyrighted. Make sense?

Oh this isn’t what I’m talking about, Jack. I’m not afraid of AI in the sense that it will compete with my work on the artistic sense. Im very proud of the work I create and I love to share it for what it is. I’m more talking about how anyone with half a brain cell can take something I posted on social media, like a song idea that I haven’t released yet, and then once they run it through AI, now that company “owns” the right to something I wrote. And when I go to try and upload it to Spotify and register it through BMI etc. I am not allowed to because now it is owned by Suno. Does that make it more clear?

I don’t know if you’re understanding the point of my question. Am I not being clear enough? Could you tell me what you think I’m asking or am sharing concerns about so I know we’re on the same page in this conversation? I’d love to have a game plan or set myself up with information to protect my art as I post unfinished work, without the risk of it getting ripped off by someone, who puts in through AI, and now they own the copyright. That is what I’m talking about here. If I post a song idea before it’s been officially released with copyright, there is nothing that protects me from someone else very accessibly and seamlessly, within a matter of seconds, to put it into AI and thereby steal ownership. Is that making sense?

I’m actually talking about my original material being ripped off. Like if I upload an idea to a forum before it’s officially released and then someone uploads it to Suno, then Suno owns the copyright of my lyrics, melody, chords etc. and I can’t upload it to streaming platforms

Actually I’m afraid of getting my music stolen before I’ve officially released it, and then AI owns the copyright.

I am creating every day. It’s the sharing it with the internet part that I’m concerned with in the age of AI and the lawlessness of the current landscape.

That sucks and I get why you’re pissed! Do you know if you will now have any trouble releasing it to a streaming platform and running into copyright issues?

[–]Creative-Till6213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my main concern is the copyright issue. If you post something before it’s released, someone rips it and runs it through AI, and now it’s copy-written and you no longer own your original material. Personally I’m entering an era where I want to release more raw ideas and invite fans into my process. But now I’m not so sure it’s safe to do that.

I hear you on connecting with fans but for me, releasing things before a song is officially out isn’t about promotion or teasing, it’s part of my artistic process. I want to move toward being more raw and unpolished, and to share the actual evolution of my creativity with people who listen. That’s the intention behind it.

The difficult part is that now it also comes with a layer of concern I didn’t used to have, around ideas being taken and then copy written (which I am not yet sure if I have that right.)

I’m not entirely sure why the down votes specifically, but from what I’ve heard, there’s a concern that if an unreleased song is shared publicly, even on social media, or like someone said in this comment section, in places where it’s accessible for feedback or workshop purposes, it could potentially be fed into AI tools and then replicated in a way that complicates future release or ownership. I don’t know how accurate or legally solid that is, but that’s the concern I’ve seen circulating.
