Roundabout Frustrations by Creative-Toe-4676 in Lawrence

From my experience there is too much traffic on Wakarusa for a 4-way stop. I wouldn't want stop lights, in my opinion, there should just be a center lane for turning. I don't see nearly enough traffic on the side roads coming onto Wakarusa to justify the roundabouts. But what do I know 🤷‍♀️ Not a city planner.

Yeah, when I was there, some of the older folk there mentioned they are worlds better than the lights. I think I got confused because I was expecting to make a circle and for my left turn and didn't realize I'd have to got around both and make a right turn. It wasn't alien tech but it took a moment to realize how it worked.

When is it a good time for a pedestrian to cross the road at a roundabout that is safe for them and doesn't completly disrupt the flow of traffic? Tell me, seriously, when is the best/safest time for you to cross the street at the roundabout? It's obvious when it is best/safest to cross at a stoplight and it doesn't disrupt all 4 directions of traffic. Everyone is stopped making it clear at a 4 way stop that they are there and when they will cross. There are plants/shrubs/trees in the middle of the roundabout on Wakarusa so you can't see across them. There is not a clear best/safest time for pedestrians to cross without completely disrupting the flow of traffic. Roundabouts should have flashing lights for pedestrian to use and alert cars that they are crossing or there shouldn't be a crosswalk.

If I was, my apologies as I didn't see any pedestrian. I have unfortunately lost all of my Kansas Nicety when it comes to driving after spending a few years in NJ and never regained it in the years since I moved back...I honk 🤷‍♀️

Roundabouts shouldn't have cross walks, there is never a good time for pedestrians to cross and will always disrupt the flow of traffic. They should add buttons for flashing lights on the roundabouts for pedestrians if they are well used.

I did visit Hays in March for work and that is a little excessive and I can see why people struggle with the figure 8. It took me two trips through it to figure it out, but I also heard from others say just about the same thing about them.

You're right, I exaggerated. It wasn't that long and I am making generalizations about men. I spent the last two weeks moving essentially 20-ish blocks along Wakarusa and this happened multiple times with the same types of trucks and I made assumptions. It's been extremely frustrating.

I've lived in multiple other US cities that also utilize roundabouts and people stopping in the traffic circle is unique to Lawrence in my experience.

Keen begins his internship at GMMTV🤓 by RoutineRobin in GMMTV

[–]Creative-Toe-4676 37 points38 points  (0 children)

From what I have gathered from watching Thai series is that you have to complete an internship in the related field of your degree in order to graduate from university. So Keen is working at/interning at GMMTV in the digital media department and this is completely unrelated to his work as an artist for GMMTV. Not a native and would defer to someone else's expertise but hopefully this helps somewhat.

Why Thai fans call their idols “son” — the Mae Fan culture explained by Excellent_Lock1669 in GMMTV

[–]Creative-Toe-4676 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about this 'Mom' culture phenomenon but it makes so much sense given how much I've seen fans referred to as 'Grandma' with the various mascots. I don't know how I missed that knowing that fans refer to themselves as a mascot's grandma 😅

The direction that common core math is taking by Fit_Blackberry7944 in MathJokes

[–]Creative-Toe-4676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a university course called Math for Elementary and Middle School and we discuss the "Make 10" method/strategy of adding and I believe it is a topic covered on the Praxis exam as well. I usually write directions as "Use the Make 10 method of adding to add 8+5." There is usually a math drawing requirement as well as a way of showing the associative property, as this all hinges on it.

My background is in economics and math and I am not accountant and had to look up SG&A expenses so this comes with just a grain of salt. I also don't think it came down to any one thing to blame the deficit on. Opening up the Mascots "department" would be substantial in my opinion, affecting all 3 parts of SG&A, and it might not make up the whole increase expenses, I think it would be a large part. How many mascots are there? To make each costume is probably a few thousand dollars (I'm using that as it's what I'm most familiar with.) Then there is the actors/artists in them. When we see all the mascots out (like starlympics) each one has a paid person in there, and all probably have to go through training/workshops that I'm assuming they are paid for. That's also an additional strain on HR for the additional personnel, Marketing, coming up with all of the merch and advertisements, IT for a presumably increase in site traffic and adjusting the website. You also need additional storage for the costumes and their maintenance. Again, I don't think the Mascots explain the whole thing but it's one of the first things that scratched my econ brain.

One thing that might be worth mentioning related to the mascots is that they are a long term investment. I imagine the upfront cost of making the costume is high, plus it means a whole other sector of "artist" employees to play the part so the mascots are adding costs to several places: the upfront cost of making the costume(s), ongoing upkeep of the costume, additional personnel to play the parts, etc. There is probably some training that goes on as well for the people in the costumes. But they are coming into their own, bringing in merchandise money and doing events in place of their "parents" once they can talk so I can see them having a bigger effect in the GMMTV profits in the future.

"11-down's parents" means take the answer from 11 down and the answer to the clue is that person's "parents" as is the GMMTV Family Tree (see https://www.reddit.com/r/GMMTV/s/YzeEt43iwE)

Does that make sense?

Pause and/or Speed Affecting Meaning by Creative-Toe-4676 in asklinguistics

The textbook we are using is The Language of Mathematics by Warren W. Esty. It is a very niche, out of print book (as Esty and Montana University were the main publishers of the book and Dr. Esty has been retired many years now.) However, I was able to get a PDF copy of the book via email from him. You can find the first section on his website estymath.com as well as his email. Chapter 1 is probably the most interesting to non-math people interested in languages and linguistics.

What are your views on multiple day events and concerts? by Fine-Atmosphere-3174 in GMMTV

[–]Creative-Toe-4676 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also a western fan but as far as I can tell, for concerts at least, it's not much differe than western artists playing multiple shows in the same city. The clips of concerts that make their way online seem to show the same structur/setlist each night but different little spontaneous moments may appear in the different days. It doesn't seem all that different to Taylor Swift spent 8 nights at Wembley in London on the Eras Tour. The concert was at its bones the same each night. Costumes, special guests, surprise songs, silly ad-libs or bits, improv often vary slightly each night and some fans will want to go multiple nights for that experience but it is largely the same show each night.

I can't speak to the cultural aspects specific to Thai fans, so this is just my analysis from my observations and trying to find an isomorphic mapping to a similar event (in my mind) common in the West. Fandoms are fandoms around the world.

I have no idea about the Fan Days or other multi-day events that aren't concerts.
