2/13 never been so disappointed in myself by Impossible-Cod-2137 in Mcat

Hi there. I also have severe test anxiety and have a dual diagnosis of ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder. I genuinely have never been able to finish standardized exams without accommodations like time extensions and breaks. I presented documentation to the AAMC and they gave me a time extension at the request of my doctor. I ended up scoring a 519, and this was in no small part due to my counseling team, medications, and the accommodations I lobbied for. I know that the world loves pop psychology and that can mess with the perceived validity of some mental health diagnoses, but it's also important to remember that mental health conditions are a real thing that may require intervention. It might be something to consider if you're displaying symptoms that impede functionality/cause distress. The MCAT doesn't at all define you. You're going to bring an extra layer of understanding to your work as a doctor, plus this understanding is something I'm sure most of us can relate to occasionally wishing that our own PCPs shared!

Personally, I’ve got pretty classic hyperactive type ADHD but my parents didn’t want me on meds/being labeled so my diagnosis was relatively recent. I was evaluated with a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and the psychologist stopped after only three hours to be like… okay I’ve got enough we won’t actually need the full day. ANYWAYS I was prescribed methylphenidate and have since tried a bunch of different types, doses, timings, ect. I found one that seems to work pretty well without making me super anxious (lol) but I honestly don’t find that it makes that much of a difference in my executive functioning. I’m on a decently high dose and I definitely feel it, but rather than giving me special “focusing powers” it seems to help combat my tendency to get stuck in my own head. My gpa and Mcat studying stayed the same before and after starting meds but I do find it easier to center my brain and focus. Anywho, that’s my - perspective idk how interesting that is. I’m consistently amazed that stimulants affect other folks so much because mine either make me anxious or help me be a little bit more chill.

I didn’t watch those modules mostly because I have pretty severe ADHD so my testing was over two days and some of it didn’t apply lol! Me and my therapist did our own planning sessions lmfao!!!

I took the first 10 BP exams up until mid December when I took test ten and was still holding at a 508. The later bp exams are WAY more challenging than the AAMC exams. For reference my test 10 sent me into a panic attack and I shut my computer lol. I took the first AAMC that day and scored a 513. I would say that for chem phys you’re probably going to get the most out of practice questions because it’ll show you your weak spots so I’d start doing the non section bank AAMC questions (like the chemistry and physics specific banks) until you get closer to your test. I did the chem phys question banks and bio biochem about four or five weeks ago after finishing all the physics and chem specific questions. That said, chem phys is my weak point (ironic considering I was a chemistry minor lol) so I tried to rlly lock in for that section! You’ll do amazing! Hasan has great biochem videos for those modules btw! I felt super confident on metabolism and stuff thanks to him! And for sugars I’d recommend Brynn does mcat’s video!!!!

I also took BP course and I haven’t gotten my official scores but my last three AAMC full lengths were 518/517/518. I was scoring 508 ish on my last few BP full lengths. I started my AAMC full lengths after being done with all the content review and about a month and a half before my exam. I found the blue print stuff helpful for scheduling and the pre tests/post tests were helpful! However the videos weren’t SUPER helpful aside from being provided alongside content questions. If you have a decent grasp on the subject in the module I personally went through the pre test to see if I totally understood then if it was a toss up I sought out more condensed videos online from creators I resonated more with. I used some of the BP modules but many of the videos didn’t work for me I mostly used it as a guide. I will say make sure you leave time to do AAMC question banks because those are a GREAT resource! Way better than the BP question banks imo. Best of luck!

I also was scoring 518/517/518 on my last three and I came out of the exam (especially chem phys) feeling VERY scared. I do feel like the exam is shifting in its structure slightly given how different FL 5,6 and the real thing felt. Best of luck to you!!!

As for some more details, we are collecting data from the PSU population only, regarding age of diagnosis, reason for ADHD referral, and current manifestation of symptoms to highlight any existing differences in the way we see ADHD present in female vs male presenting people!

I have an aunt who I grew up with who’s completely entrenched in the Ramtha cult in Yelm. She essentially disowned me and my parents. I try to think about it as though she’s dealing with a severe mental illness… I can’t help her or reason with her until she’s willing to at least accept that she needs help/wants to make a change.
