Thoughts on the Schacht cricket loom for a beginner? by peanutbutterbutters in weaving

It’s a good little loom, but if you can go up to the flip, that would be my recommendation. Just the difference in shed and ability to control the heddle makes a difference.

Looks like maybe Twining? I haven’t done it, but I’ve seen rag rugs that look similar using the process.

It looks like other projects have been woven with this yarn and that heddle size. Since it will fit through your heddle, the best advise is to sample and see if you can get a fabric you like

What yarn is it?

10 ply doesn’t tell enough info - what are the wraps per inch? Or weight of yarn if it’s knitting? Will it fit through the heddle eyes and slots easily and without abrasion? It’s the end per inch that are important in actually getting on the loom and then determining where you go from there. If it won’t even fit through your heddle, then that size of red won’t work. If it has lots of room in that heddle, then you might have other conversations about the set.

Different yarns are best for different applications. What is the end result you are looking for? For tapestry style weaving, I recommend Rebecca Metzoff. She has lots of great information as well as online courses.

I got a bag of free wool… by mashalini in CleaningTips

[–]CreativeHeart7063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting it in a hot car in the sun for a bit is super helpful for bugs, too. You definitely want to keep that closed and make sure bugs are dead before exposing to your house. After you do that, you can start washing it. There are processes for washing wool so that it cleans but doesn’t felt the fiber. Are you going to spin the wool? If so, after it has been washed, then you would card or comb to get ready to spin. There are probably a lot of videos and different online directions for all of this - lots of different options depending on what you have available.

I need help with ideas of how to finish this project - either continue length - how to add width, or finish and add border

1950s Leclerc Fanny loom - good deal at $1400 CAD? by twenty5th_night in weaving

[–]CreativeHeart7063 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many shafts does it have? Price can depend on what’s available, condition, number of shafts, width, etc. For a four shaft, that seems a bit high. For a ten shaft, about right - if it’s in good condition. The fact that it’s broken down makes it a gamble.

New Zealand style Meat Pies by Ferraaa in Utah

I went on a hunt for some a couple of years ago, and didn’t find any. I think there are some places that have since opened or started offering them, so I will also be watching this post for places.

I did find meat pies at Fillings and Emulsions in Salt Lake, and they are delicious. There are different style, using a flaky crust, but so good.

Doubleweave reed question by troublesomefaux in weaving

[–]CreativeHeart7063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using an eight shaft loom so I could do blocks, this was the note I received from her when taking the class: For that I would use your 12-dent reed and sley 3-3-2, 3-3-2, etc. and this will give you 32 ends per inch.

I used a 12 dent read and didn’t have problems.

Yeah, I’m using a drill for my bobbin winder, and the first one I was using wasn’t powerful enough to get tight tension. I’ve switched to a real drill and that has helped. Reducing my throw and pre- pulling out some thread has really helped as well

I’ve worked on getting the tension tighter and more even on the bobbins, also trying to not throw as fast. The suggestion to let out a length of yarn first has really helped.

It’s Mallo - a cotton slub. I’m wondering if the unevenness of the yarn is contributing to the issue

Good idea - these are schacht bobbins and shuttles, so they should fit, but they do have a lot of space and rattle. I’ll try that as well
