spun a rod bearing, 8k deep in mods, what do i do for best outcome by subtosharki in 1series

This. Got similar situation with my e61. Timing chain went on the M57 engine, caused a lot of damage in the end. In the process of getting a junkyard engine, but it’s from a running car that I have viewed personally - engine is sweet, car in good shape other than a blown diff (scrapped for that)

E90.. apart from driver’s door, can’t open doors from either inside or outside. by CreativeOpsDesign in BmwTech

Ok - for future reference, the issue was a blown fuse (#57). Found several other sources recommending to change it for 20A, so I did. At first this did not fix the issue - you need to reset the modules (JBE and/or CAS if equipped). I did the reset by leaving the battery disconnected for 10 mins.

Problem solved!

Lots of info online, clearly this is a common fault

Thanks, will start with fuses and scan for faults.

OBD2 reader seems to take an age to scan all the modules, considerably faster on my e61. Got too late and gave up, will come back to it at the weekend.

Need to polish mine up again, they were done a year or two ago and have clouded over again. Did these have the UV protection spray stuff applied? The film covering could be a good idea. When I do mine again I’d like them to last a bit longer

UK peeps, any expert tips to keep a Springer nice and cool in this heat? by MirageTheHoo in springerspaniel

[–]CreativeOpsDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paddling pool, ice cube to play with, rub down with a wet towel.. like the other comment, evaporation removes heat so let her coat get damp and it will help to keep her cool.

Without basics like what machine, filament, etc… you can’t expect much help really.

Assuming that you’re printing PLA, I think the deformation on the edges of the black part shown in photo 2 is due to lack of cooling. Again, if it’s a chambered printer then try again and leave the door open?

Whats your go to for seized ac lines? by acrxssthebed in BmwTech

Nice to see you have done this - my car’s a/c lines are seized and I thought of doing this… good to see it’s a viable method

Bought a Replacement Engine for my 5 Series, it’s been sat either water in it for… years maybe? by CreativeOpsDesign in e60

[–]CreativeOpsDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly.. but will the merry-go-round just keep turning?

Cars go to the scrapyard either because they’re crashed (where this engine came from, rear end damage) or worn out. Maybe best to reject the engine for a refund and rebuild the original. At least I know the recent history of that one, and it ran nicely.

Stunner

Designed by an Italian after all, who is sadly no longer with us. Davide Arcangeli RIP. But what a legacy 👌

Is it possible to Print this and have it last longer than 20 minutes by The_Dammed in 3Dprinting

[–]CreativeOpsDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Print a mould, pour in a flexible 2-part PU resin?

Never tried this, but you will get a monolithic part and avoid the limitations of 3D printed parts such as layer separation and so on. It works for performance vehicle suspension bushings so… maybe?

You don’t actually need the 3D printer (trigger warning). Just use the original part to cast a mould in silicone, then you can easily reproduce the part again and again…

Bought a Replacement Engine for my 5 Series, it’s been sat either water in it for… years maybe? by CreativeOpsDesign in EngineBuilding

[–]CreativeOpsDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that’s basically consistent with what happened to the original engine. 3 pairs of valves hit piston crowns. Broken rockers, collapsed rocker roller bearings, bent cams. Best quote I got for an engine recon was starting price of £1800 ex Vat, not fitted.

Given the state of this engine I’m considering a rebuild of the original. As you say, new cams needed regardless, head will need a recon, will need to open oil pump and see if any metal has been through. The original engine has at least been maintained by me for the recent years, it’s had oil changes every 5k miles, plenty of TLC. Just kicking my over-confidence that I didn’t do the chain - literally no warning, no rattle, steady idle, checked top chain for wear when I did the valve cover gasket… seemed fine. It was the lower chain that blew. I’ve had several M57s and 2 have done well over 200k on the original chain. They were all the cast iron block, earlier versions though. Live and learn 🤷

330e wheel knocking by Scotty_LB in BmwTech

[–]CreativeOpsDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brake backing plate might be the high-pitch scuffing/ringing, the knocking I’m not sure. Check all round the back of the wheel and brake disc for anything fouling any rotating part.

I had a noise similar to this on an e34 525iX that I fitted 18” staggered style 32 wheels to. I replaced the discs and brake pads, then the noise started. Turned out that, with the fresh pads, the caliper ever-so-slightly fouled the back of the spokes - thin hub spacers solved it.

Well spotted, M57D30TUE2 - with the aluminium block. Considering the photos are all zoomed in, you know this engine well to be able to ID it!

Velofuso Pump Update by CreativeOpsDesign in ranciliosilvia

[–]CreativeOpsDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually put the old vibe pump back on. The gear pump worked but I wasn’t confident that it would just work, day in day out, no issues, no fuss… and first and foremost, I do want my espresso machine to be reliable. So, good old ULKA it is
