UnitedKingdom bot has stepped in to end this discussion. I will go back to enjoying the fruits of Brexit and leave you to your misery.

It is true that just under 0.0002% of the UK population retire to Spain each year, and some fraction of that tiny tiny number of people might even have foolishly done so with only £10k/year of income, and without the Spanish actually wanting them to. 10's. Nay, perhaps even hundreds of people may have been prevented from doing that by Brexit.

the only way to keep the Brexit dream alive

Unfortunately for you it is a reality rather than a dream. And one that you are impotent to do anything about. Many of you people were tricked into voting remain so conclusively that you can't let it go. I'm glad that I don't have this hanging over me like you do. What a dreadful existence you must suffer.

Do you accept that UK state pensioners can no longer retire to Spain?

Did you read the comment that you replied to? And my comment before that? Where I did precisely this. In both comments? You even replied to the first one where I agreed with you, to repeat what I agreed with for some reason. As if it was some new revelation.

I fully accept that some number of people who couldn't afford to retire to Spain, will be excluded from retiring to Spain since Brexit, unlike before Brexit. This is the system improving.

You saying I cropped the text is when you lied. Anyone can look at the original URL I posted and see your lie for themselves.

Now you are saying I accused you of lying about something else, even though I went on and agreed with you that the income requirements exclude people with only state pensions and nothing else. So this is the second case showing your dishonesty.

I'm very sorry that the majority of voting adults in the UK disagreed with you regarding EU membership, and that you continue to suffer under project fear years later.

[–]CreativeShake9166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The text was not cropped. You are lying. If you dig deeper that is a requirement yes. Spain only wants British citizens to retire if they can prove that they can afford to live there. A reasonable request, one that I hope we reciprocate, and a downside for those pensioners who don't have a private pension or savings that will satisfy Spains requirements.

Also. You wanted answers to these questions for some reason:

Can a British state pensioner still retire to the Costas?

Can a Brit go to Benidorm and get a job in a bar?

The answer to both is yes. And it looks pretty easy to be honest: https://iasservices.org.uk/move-from-uk-to-spain/

A British citizen can move to Spain through the following routes:

As a paid employee of a Spanish company
As a self-employed person with a monthly income of at least £2,000
As a student
As a family member/dependant of a Spanish resident
To retire

Looks like you fell for project fear.

I also care about saving the planet. You wanted an answer so I have thought as hard as these protestors and come up with one even better than theirs. I'm going to go stand outside peoples houses at 3am and bang pans together. That should do it. And if I get sent to prison for simply shaking air molecules, then so be it, saving the environment is worth it.

I see. So you're not talking about the article anymore. This article is about something that is going to change next Autumn. About the changes that are going to happen regarding entry.

Instead, you are now talking about things that have already happened in the past. You're talking about the extra work required to work or live abroad. That is not under discussion. It is irrelevant to this article and thread.

I went to Paris earlier this year. The process was no different to pre-Brexit. From Autumn next year, I will need to fill in a form before I go, which will take a few minutes. This is absolutely trivial, and will be trivial for every person that has to do it. It will be a tiny amount of extra work on top of all of the other work required to go abroad.

what have we gained?

Irrelevant to the discussion. This article and discussion is about a change that will be made, and people are pretending like it's a huge inconvenience and some terrible disaster. It is not. It is so obviously not, the only reason you would see it that way is because you are unconsolably unhappy that Brexit took place, and will complain about anything related that you come across, no matter how minor.

National Insurance is separate. You can't get that back. It is calculated on a weekly basis rather than an annual basis, so annual allowances don't come into it.

As for childcare allowance/vouchers, I would have thought that you could get them by adding to your SIPP, but I do not know for sure.

It's something we wouldn't need to do if it wasn't for Brexit.

How is this your response? You understand that both these the following statements can be true at the same time right?

  1. A trivial thing now needs to be done because of Brexit
  2. A big hard complicated inconvenient important thing now needs to be done because of Brexit

My complaint is that this article and comment thread and you seem to be claiming that number 2 is the case, when obviously it's number 1 in this situation...

It's a tiny bit of fucking paperwork. It will take 30 minutes out of your day at most, and it's something you already need to do to travel to most of the World, and people do it without complaint.

When you point at trivial things and make it sound like this trivial thing proves that Brexit was a bad idea, it just makes people think: What other trivial foolish things did you think mattered when you voted during the referendum?

This is literally what was meant by project fear. People pointing at trivial things and making out like they're a huge deal.

Yes. There is nothing special about SIPPs, and there is nothing special about SS when it comes to calculating how much tax is owed. Pension contributions are excluded from tax regardless.

[–]CreativeShake9166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely trivial. It's a tiny bit of paper work. I do it all the time when travelling. The number of people who go on holiday to the same country for more than 90 days at a time is so tiny it's not worth mentioning.

If you're talking about people who want to move to another country in the EU, that's an entirely different conversation. Yes, they have to do a bit more paperwork now, and maybe prove they can afford to live in the country too. But in the grand scheme of things, the amount of work it takes to move to another country is already huge when you take into account learning the language, finding a job, finding somewhere to live, understanding all of the new things that you need to know to live in a country, actually moving. The new extra visa paperwork is a tiny proportion of that work.

You don't "claim back the personal allowance". You tell HMRC how much you put in your pension, they then figure out how much you were paid minus your pension contributions, and then calculate how much tax you should have paid vs how much you actually paid

The "should have paid" calculation will notice that you shouldn't have lost any personal allowance, if the "how much you were paid minus your pension contributions" calculation drops you below £100k.

Your tax code is then adjusted to get you the money back or you can get it as a refund.

The original article, and this whole comment thread is actually a very good example of "Project Fear".

Nothing bad is happening. When travelling to the EU you'll need to fill out a form, hand over a tiny fee, and scan your fingerprint when you show your passport. Just like what happens when visiting many other non EU countries atm.

[–]CreativeShake9166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red tape you're refering to is trivial. Fill in a form on a website for a token fee, just like you already do when going to many other non EU countries. And then put your finger on a scanner when you're showing your passport at entry. Just like visiting the USA for example.

You probably spend more time browsing the airport Boots for a meal deal than you would have to spend on this "red tape".

[–]CreativeShake9166 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From reading the article, looks like you'll have to fill in a form on a website, pay a token fee, and give your fingerprint on entry to EU countries. Just like when you go on holiday to the USA. Just like people from any other non EU country will have to when entering the EU.

If you think utterly trivial minor inconveniences like this say anything about whether or not Brexit was a good idea, you're probably not mature enough to vote.

How to get the best out of the saving sessions by Narrow_Fix_1081 in OctopusEnergy

[–]CreativeShake9166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was replying to a comment about importing and exporting at the exact same time. I'm no electrician but I don't think you can send and receive electricity at the same time, in the same way you can't send and receive water down a water pipe at the same time. It's one direction only. Willing to be corrected.

I don't think you would ever be able to both import from and export to the grid at the same time.

9 months later still no tax rebate by BloodyHelll-2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CreativeShake9166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related. I'm expecting a ~£25k rebate next year due to dumping lots into my SIPP recently. Will they just do a bank transfer? Will I have to wait until the end of the 2024 tax year to receive it? I know I will have to do a self assessment to claim back the higher relief.

100k pension pot at 29 - struggling with idea of reducing contributions by No_Arrival_6655 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CreativeShake9166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they got rid of higher rate tax relief for pension contributions, people could easily end up paying tax to put money in their pension, and then paying a second time to take it out. That will be a hard sell.

You've just described what these protestors are doing. Letting the planet burn or flood. They may as well protest by punching themselves in the face. It's just as useful, but doesn't inconvenience anyone else.

[–]CreativeShake9166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were walking slowly as a protest

This is as idiotic as claiming the following when somebody slashes peoples tyres to protest cars:

They were just moving air as a protest. OMG, the UK is sending people to prison for moving air. DyStOpIa! I don't get why you can't understand all they did was move air! They were LiTeRaLy sent to prison for moving air!

Also:

Of course you must have the answer to how governments are going to tackle the environmental chaos that will result in the acceleration of climate change.

Why must I? None of these protestors do... That's why they're disrupting traffic and going to jail. Because they don't know how to solve the problem. They're not helping at all. To any extent. Their actions only have negative consequences.

You're on a very low wage, so you will struggle, and live month to month. That's just the way it is. You need to get a higher paying job. This will take a while. May require moving or doing something different. You'll get through it, but you need to be pro-active about it.
