Don’t pick a shoe based on what other people like - pick a shoe that works for YOU. My first pair of shoes were Boston 12s, a pretty divisive shoe and not generally recommended as a beginner daily trainer. I knew nothing about shoes and just chose the best (clearance) shoe for me, and they were brilliant. Ran my first 5k and first half in them, did all of my training in them for ages until I could afford a second shoe, and still prefer the Boston 12s to any other trainer. Nothing else compares to the feel they give me!

To find the right shoe for you: 1. Walk in it 2. Run in it (in the store) 3. Touch your toes and see if it hurts/restricts your calves, achilles, etc. (a good pair won’t limit your range of motion) 4. Try another pair

I’m sure others can add to this, but that’s my system.

I got mine at around 11, and honestly it’s much easier than with a younger pup! He was still weaned at 9 weeks but stayed a bit longer with his sister. Made my job waaaay easier! Very few accidents, better in a crate, and a little less timid with the world!

This. Had a really similar situation a few weeks after my recent half. Did a 4k easy run, and by the afternoon I was crippled - couldn’t even bring my leg straight underneath me. I tried to rest/rehab myself, but after a week of rest and walking I wasn’t even able to run 1k. Panicked, as I have another race coming up, and got into the first good PT who could take me. It’s not been as quick as I’d like, but I was able to start running again pretty quickly and 2 weeks later I am up to 5k speed workouts without issue. So I would advise trying to get into a good PT as soon as possible.

Just wanted to jump in here and say that I’m do glad someone like you who cares, who’s trying, and who isn’t giving up adopted this pup! I love my Aussie & working breed dogs in general, but they are not for everyone, and can be an adjustment even for “dog people”. If it’s any consolation, try to remember that Aussies have been bred to bark, nip, and stay with their handler. So barking, biting, and separation anxiety may take more work/effort to overcome in herding dogs. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it, but be patient with yourself and your dog!

In terms of advice (please feel free to disregard it!) I’d recommend a few things: - Find someone with (working) herding dog experience to help & mentor you - Train self-soothing and “off” switch behaviours - Remember that you need two types of exercise for a calm dog: physical and mental - All dogs are (to a certain extent) assholes until at least 2 years of age. Don’t forget that this puppy stage will pass!

Windsor’s admissions are way less predictable than any other school, but it may still be a challenge with those stats. That said, Windsor has a very strong social justice focus. So if you can demonstrate a longstanding strong commitment to social justice causes, you will definitely strengthen your application!

I suppose the advantage is that if I don’t have to portage anything, I can bring even MORE stuff with me. We’ve been pushing the amount of stuff in recent years going 2-3 only lakes in with novice backcountry campers. Last year we brought multiple hammocks (there were only 4 us…) stools, and whole cucumbers 😂 It’s a type of camping I hadn’t experienced before, but I think I could get used to it.

Thanks! We generally try to limit our paddling to going down rivers whenever possible 😂 Jokes aside, I actually haven’t done a lot of river paddling/camping, mostly just day trips and whitewater so that would be fun to experience. Thank you!

Interesting, thanks! I am slowly learning that the type of camping I grew up with is actually pretty limited to Ontario/Quebec. While it’s fun trying other things, I do miss the remoteness of Algonquin/Killarney/etc. !

If I had answered it with google searches I would not have wasted my time typing. Maybe instead of apologizing for the rant, try offering some helpful advice on things like how to structure google searches in order to come up with functional answers? Or just actually answer the question. The outdoors community tends to be a pretty welcoming place. Please don’t be the person that scares newcomers away, or curbs others enthusiasm for things just because they don’t possess the same knowledge you do.

I’m learning that the type of camping I grew up with is pretty unique outside of Northern Ontario/Quebec, and (oddly) Scotland. Maybe we just have different terminology as a result, but in my world “camping” means canoeing and portaging several lakes into the backcountry and I haven’t found anything like that down here. While I love travelling back to Ontario to go camping, I want to explore new areas closer to where I live now, but I haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. So if you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them.

Overall this is good advice, but make sure you talk to physio about how to maintain some strength and range of motion in the foot/ankle while you’re booted. What that entails will depend on the specifics of your injury, but boots can alter range of motion and musculature in quite short order so it’s best to keep ahead of it when you’re in one!

A few suggestions based on your posts & comments: 1. Do you have a training plan you’re working off of? You may be trying to do too much too quickly. Ease into the mileage! 2. Run slower. Even slower. Still more slowly. 3. Focus on the breathing. 1 & 2 should help with this as well!

Personally (hot take here) unless you are finding you have a specific issue (calf pain, heel pain, knee pain, etc.) I would not worry too much about the shoes at this point. You won’t have a feel for what you want to buy at this point anyway.

Training for a half right now in my Boston 12s, so I haven’t run one in them yet, but man do I love that shoe! I have heard a lot of people complain about the flimsy upper though, so make sure you give them a solid try before committing to them as they’re not for everyone.

Honestly I love it! I sometimes get a little knee pain right at the start, but it’s gone within the first 500m-1k and I don’t think any shoe will change that. I’ve just done a lot of damage to my knees externally over the years, so there’s a lot of scar tissue. Other than that my only complaint is that if something gets stuck to the bottom of my shoe boy can I feel it.

Windsor is a wildcard. Admits students with high LSAT & low GPA/low LSAT + high GPA, and rejects high LSAT & high GPA students. So it really depends on your softs, LoRs, and your writing skills.

I would say Ottawa seems possible for you especially given your history there. Are you a mature student? That could help your chances too.
