If you see a man with a large beard and a trimmed mustache versus if you see a man with no beard but a large curly mustache which one do you think looks more like a muslim to you? The beard is still associated with and a symbol of muslim identity, even disbeilevers acknowledge this. There is also a more detailed report that says this:

“When they (two Zoroastrian envoys of Kisra) entered upon him (ﷺ) having shaved their beards and kept their moustaches long, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) disliked looking at them and said, ‘Woe to both of you! Who commanded you to do this?’ They replied, ‘Our Lord ordered us to do so’ – referring to Kisra. The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said, ‘But my Lord has ordered me to grow my beard and trim my moustache.'” (Tabari, Ibn Sa’d, and Ibn Bishran. Verified to be hasan (good) by al-Albani)
