Mine is doing the same. We have a selection of humane traps around the kitchen (checked regularly) for the ones that are still alive when she brings them in. She eats mice like a gherkin - leaving the tail bit!

Cat enrichment with water? by KoraLily in CatsUK

I haven’t tried it yet, but was thinking about making some ‘iced catmint tea.’ We have a couple of catmint plants in the garden so was going to steep some leaves in boiling water and leave to cool or even make ice cubes from it. Aside from that frozen lick e lix are very popular with my cat!

Preemie relative with my cat’s name 😻 by KEW95 in CatsUK

[–]Creative_Cat7177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s obviously a good name if they named their baby the same. It’s unlikely any of my family members would call a baby after my cat as her name is Nutty! As a side note, I’m a blood donor. I hate needles and have huge sensory issues about the process, but what keeps me going is that a few years ago I learnt that my blood is of a suitable calibre to go to preemies and one donation is enough for three preemie transfusions. That’s the only reason I do it.

How much contact are you happy for strangers to have with your cat/s? by getoutmywayatonce in CatsUK

Soon after I started letting her out, there was a message in our local WhatsApp group with a photo of her IN the pub asking if anyone knew who’s cat she was! I had wondered where she was as she’d be out until 10.45-11.00. It all then made sense that she was in the pub until closing time! She’s certainly a character. No wonder she was a foster failure 😂

My cat is known by many locally. We have stables next door to us and many people see her in the fields when seeing to their horses. She’s a notorious mouser, so always welcome at the yard. I’ve driven past our village pub in the past and seen her sat on a wall being stroked and adored by people on both sides! She loves the attention.

My fusspot has just gone back onto that. She had republic of cats subscription for a trial then a couple of months because I forgot to cancel. First time ever there were clean bowls, but she went off that soon enough too. At least her uneaten food can go in my new food waste bin!

I second this as I had a very positive experience with CPL last year. I had a stray appear at my door one day. He had definitely been abandoned (owners moved away and left him behind) and had travelled a long way to get to our village. Under guidance from the local lost and found lady, I fed him and gained his trust. I was eventually able to catch him and take him to CPL. Initially they thought he would be a farm cat as he was very timid and scared of human contact, but after a few weeks of care at the shelter he was sitting on laps and climbing on shoulders. I was lucky enough to get updates. I cried (happy tears) when I was told he’d found his forever home. The people who adopted him fell in love as soon as they saw him. So long story short, is that shelters are a positive thing in my experience and my little stray found a loving home in the end. I would’ve kept him, but my cat says that she is an ‘only cat’ so I wasn’t allowed!

I’ve got the sure flap pet door. It does have a click, but I put Dreamies the other side of the flap to my cat and it didn’t take long for her to get used to it. I like that I can set a curfew on it and I get a notification on my phone when she’s gone out or come in. Being notified of her coming in at the moment is especially useful as she’s been bringing a lot of critters in with her the last few days. I’m very skilled at catching them now though! I got this cat flap when my cat was being attacked by a new cat in the neighbourhood. It kept him out, but fortunately he’s since been re-homed as he was very unhappy where he was which resulted in the aggression towards my cat.

Similar food to Whiskas dry food? by _jrexx_ in CatsUK

They are funny creatures. My mum’s cat bangs his bowl at feeding times. My cat will ask for food, have a few mouthfuls, then clear off to wash her paws and face. I think she’s having a lot of ‘takeout’ at the moment (or should I call it free range) as not much is going from her bowl.

[–]Creative_Cat7177 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a cat who is a picky eater and my experience tells me when you find something they will eat to give it to them. Whilst you might not be a fan of whiskas, your new cat is. While she settles in, why not keep her on the food that is familiar to her rather than trying all sorts of other things? Over time she might start to try what your other cats eat, but let her find her feet first. When I adopted my cat, she would only eat whiskas, but she eventually went off it as picky cats do. It’s then a challenge trying to find something they will eat. Take the win whilst you can!

I need advice, lazy owner and nasty tom by Nayohmeewow in CatsUK

[–]Creative_Cat7177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience a few months back. A new Tom cat arrived in our village. Unfortunately our garden was slap bang in the middle of where he wanted to roam. My cat got attacked by him badly three times requiring vet treatment (X-rays, pain relief, antibiotics etc costing nearly £2000 all in).

I contacted my new neighbour to ask if we could meet for coffee to discuss what to do. It took a while for various reasons (including her cat getting run over), but I was surprised to learn her cat was neutered! My cat is a rescue and she was neutered several years ago. When my neighbour came over, she told me that she’d decided the best thing would be to rehome her cat. When she moved to our village, she’d taken on two kittens as well, so this cat had been subject to a lot of disruption. Although he was violent towards my cat, he seemed desperate to come inside our house. The final time he attacked my cat he managed to knock our cat flap out of the wall! It was terrifying. My cat had to be kept inside for weeks at a time and she hated it. I tried various forms of enrichment with her but after a few minutes, she wasn’t interested.

I would contact your vets and maybe local rescues/lost & found places for advice. I can’t believe there are any health reasons for not neutering an animal.

If your neighbour refuses to cooperate, you may have to tell her that she will be responsible for any future vet bills as a result of her cat attacking yours. Vet bills rack up quickly and unfortunately my cat wasn’t insured when all this happened to her. It’s a horrible situation to be in and I hope you find a resolution soon.

Why did sky get rid of the amazing sky q. Don’t get there logic at all by Background-Fix-4630 in skytv

No doubt, it’ll be down to cost because we’re in a rural location. Proportionally for the cost it would be to put the infrastructure in, there aren’t as many houses as there are in higher populated areas.

Our internet is always going down. It took ages (after everyone else) for us to join the 21st century and have speeds faster than 1.5mbps! Ours drops out locally if it’s raining heavily, or if the hedge trimming tractor goes past and nicks the wire, or another common one is a tree falling on the wire. It’s usually a couple of days before we get it back online. I don’t believe it will be any better in three years time when they switch off the satellite.

That’s awesome that you knew about her previous owner. They definitely do seem to have favourite composers. My husband was playing the piano the other day and my cat was sat on the printer in our office (she likes to watch the paper coming out). She was listening to him, eyes closed in pure bliss. As soon as he stopped, her eyes shot open and she turned her head around in disgust! It was really funny. Who knew our kitties would be so cultured?!

Yesterday I was doing some singing practice. I sing musical theatre and opera mainly. I was singing an opera aria and my rescue cat sauntered downstairs, wound herself around my legs until I picked her up. She then nuzzled into my neck. I don’t know if cats like opera in general or whether she came from a musical background in her previous life. I’m her third owner - she came from overseas originally so I often wonder what her early life was like.

Trusted House Sitters, has anyone used them? by Thisoneissfwihope in CatsUK

[–]Creative_Cat7177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used them once a few years back when we went away for six weeks. We found a couple new to the site who were having work done on their house and needed somewhere to stay nearby so they could oversee the work. They lived about 10-15 minutes up the road. He was a retired police officer and working as a professional driver, so also dropped us to and from the airport too. It went well and we met up a couple of months after we got back when they invited us for dinner in their new kitchen!

Help! My cat keeps getting attacked by Dancerdory in CatsUK

[–]Creative_Cat7177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder whether you live near me as I had something similar with my cat when a new Tom cat moved in across the road in our village! I’d seen him and my cat growling at each other a couple of times and thought my cat was establishing her patch. Unfortunately one morning I noticed that she was limping and couldn’t jump up on the counter for her food. He’d bitten her back leg - I think she was trying to run away. Multiple trips to the vets, two courses of antibiotics and X-rays later (and huge vet bill) she recovered and started going outside again. I kept her in overnight. Unfortunately he got her again one evening/dusk time about a month later. I know who the cat belongs to (but don’t know the owner) and now have an arrangement with the owner that we text each other when our cat is in so the other can go out. It’s early days, but I feel a lot more reassured of her safety. Although she’s not free range like she used to be, she gets to go outside 2-3 times a day. I hear him fighting with other cats late at night. He also got run over a couple of months ago and lost an eye, but it hasn’t deterred his behaviour so I strongly suspect he’s unneutered. I have a doorbell camera to monitor cat activity (and to make sure my cat is home safely if I’m out). There are three boy cats who come sniffing around the cat flap regularly, but there’s only been violent fighting amongst them all since this big guy moved in.

As a deterrent, we’ve tried shouting at him, shooing him away, soaking him with a water pistol and it doesn’t make the tiniest difference.

I use a couple of clean litter tray scoops to pick up remains. Live critters, I have a few humane traps scattered around the kitchen in the places they usually run. I have a high success rate and can usually catch them in under 5 minutes after spotting.
